PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO LEFT THE LANCASTER DYNASTY

Adrian Lancaster thought ten million dollars could end everything.

He thought it was a transaction.

A signature.

A woman leaving quietly with enough money to disappear.

He never imagined that the woman who walked out of his mansion that day was not losing something.

She was finally choosing herself.

The first night after I left, I didn’t sleep.

Not because I regretted my decision.

But because for the first time in three years, I was alone with my own thoughts.

No footsteps from the hallway.

No cold conversations at the dinner table.

No waiting for Adrian to come home.

No wondering if today would be the day he looked at me differently.

My daughter slept peacefully beside me.

My son was holding his favorite toy, completely unaware that his entire world had changed.

I watched them for a long time.

Then I whispered:

“From now on, mom will protect you.”

The next morning, I received a message.

Not from Adrian.

From his grandmother.

The woman who once looked at me as if I was only a tool for continuing the Lancaster bloodline.

“Come back.”

I stared at the two words on my phone.

Three years ago, those words would have made me excited.

I would have thought she finally accepted me.

Now…

I only felt tired.

I replied with one sentence.

“I have already left.”

A few minutes later, another message arrived.

“You don’t understand what you are giving up.”

I smiled.

Because for three years, everyone in that family had said the same thing.

They thought I was lucky.

Lucky to live in the Lancaster mansion.

Lucky to give birth to Adrian’s children.

Lucky to receive money.

But nobody ever asked if I was happy.

Nobody ever asked what I wanted.

So I didn’t answer.

Meanwhile, Adrian was completely losing control.

The ten million dollars had been transferred.

The agreement had been signed.

Everything should have ended exactly as planned.

But it didn’t.

Because the mansion became unbearably quiet.

The first thing Adrian noticed was the breakfast table.

My seat was empty.

For three years, even when he ignored me, I was always there.

Preparing food.

Taking care of the children.

Waiting.

Now there was nothing.

Only an empty chair.

His assistant reported his schedule.

He listened but didn’t respond.

Because he suddenly remembered something.

I had never asked him for expensive gifts.

I never demanded jewelry.

I never complained about living in the old guest room.

The only thing I ever wanted…

Was for him to see me.

And he never did.

That afternoon, Adrian entered the children’s room.

The nanny had packed everything.

The toys.

The clothes.

The small things they used every day.

On the shelf was a drawing.

A picture made by his son.

Three people holding hands.

A father.

A mother.

A child.

Adrian stared at it.

Then he noticed something.

The father in the drawing was standing far away.

The child was holding the mother’s hand.

Not his.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

For the first time, Adrian felt afraid.

Not afraid of losing money.

Not afraid of losing power.

Afraid that his children might grow up and never need him.

That night, he called me.

I looked at the screen.

Adrian Lancaster.

The name that once controlled my emotions.

The name that once made me wait beside the phone until midnight.

Now it was just a name.

I didn’t answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

The third time, I finally picked up.

“Hello.”

There was silence on the other side.

Because maybe he expected tears.

Anger.

Questions.

Anything.

But I gave him nothing.

“Mara…”

He stopped.

My name sounded strange from him.

“How are the children?”

I looked at my sleeping daughter.

“They’re fine.”

“Are they asking about me?”

I was silent.

That silence hurt him more than any answer.

“Why didn’t you tell them I wanted to see them?”

I almost laughed.

“I never stopped you from seeing them.”

“You never asked.”

The line became quiet.

Because that was the truth.

He had spent three years believing I was the person holding him back.

But he was the one who never stepped forward.

“Can I come see them?”

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

The question surprised him.

“Because they’re my children.”

I smiled sadly.

“They were your children before I left too, Adrian.”

“You just weren’t there.”

Those words followed him long after the call ended.

Two days later, Adrian appeared at the seaside hotel.

Not with assistants.

Not with security.

Not as the heir of the Lancaster dynasty.

Just as a father.

My son saw him first.

He stopped.

The child looked at him.

Then looked at me.

Because children always understand more than adults think.

Adrian slowly knelt down.

“Hi.”

My son didn’t move.

“I am…”

He paused.

The word father seemed difficult to say.

“I am your dad.”

The boy stared at him.

Then asked a question that destroyed Adrian.

“Why didn’t you live with us?”

Adrian froze.

Because there was no answer that could make a child understand abandonment.

He looked at me.

I didn’t rescue him.

For three years, I had always rescued him.

This time, he had to face the truth himself.

“I was wrong.”

Adrian finally said.

“I should have been there.”

My son looked at him.

“Are you leaving again?”

Adrian’s eyes turned red.

“No.”

But even he knew those words were not enough anymore.

Promises were easy.

Actions were what mattered.

Weeks passed.

Adrian started visiting regularly.

No expensive gifts.

No grand gestures.

Just time.

He learned what food his son liked.

He learned how to hold his daughter when she cried.

He learned the small details he had ignored for years.

And slowly, I saw something change.

Not the powerful businessman.

Not the Lancaster heir.

Just Adrian.

The man I once loved.

But I never forgot what happened.

One evening, he found me watching the sunset.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Yes.”

“Do you hate me?”

I looked at the ocean.

“No.”

He seemed surprised.

“Then why won’t you come back?”

I was quiet for a long time.

Then I answered.

“Because I don’t want to return to a place where I had to beg to belong.”

Adrian lowered his head.

That sentence hurt because it was true.

The woman who once waited for him had disappeared.

The woman standing before him now didn’t need his approval.

She had built a life without him.

Months later, the Lancaster family announced something unexpected.

Adrian rejected the arranged marriage his grandmother had prepared.

He publicly declared that his children were his only heirs.

Not because of blood.

But because they were his family.

Everyone was shocked.

But I wasn’t.

Because for the first time, Adrian was making a choice.

Not for the Lancaster name.

Not for business.

For himself.

However, when Adrian came to ask me if there was still a chance for us…

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because leaving him was easy.

But deciding whether he deserved a second chance was much harder.

I looked at the man in front of me.

The man who once thought ten million dollars could replace love.

And I said:

“Adrian, I don’t need you to prove that you regret losing me.”

“I need to know if you finally understand why you lost me.”

For the first time…

The heir of the Lancaster dynasty had no answer.

And maybe that was the beginning of his real change.
