PART 2: THE CHILD WHO REVEALED THE LIE

Three days later.

Daniel Carter stood in front of my apartment door.

I had just returned from buying groceries when I saw him.

The man who had left me with a divorce certificate in his hand.

The man who had chosen another woman while I was carrying his child.

The man who watched me walk into the hospital alone.

Now he stood there with a face I had never seen before.

Broken.

Lost.

Desperate.

“Emma…”

I didn’t open the door completely.

“What do you want?”

His eyes were red.

He looked like he hadn’t slept for days.

“Our baby…”

He swallowed.

“Our baby could still be alive, right?”

For a moment, I didn’t answer.

Not because I didn’t know what to say.

Because I couldn’t believe those were his first words.

Not:

“I’m sorry.”

Not:

“Are you okay?”

Not:

“I was wrong.”

Only:

“Our baby.”

I looked at him quietly.

“Why?”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“Why do you suddenly care?”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I made a mistake.”

A mistake.

That word.

A simple word.

Too simple for everything he destroyed.

“You made a choice, Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“You chose Vanessa.”

“You chose her child.”

“You chose to erase our baby before he even had a chance to exist.”

His lips trembled.

“I didn’t know…”

“No.”

I interrupted.

“You didn’t want to know.”

The silence between us became unbearable.

After leaving the hospital that day, Daniel discovered the truth.

The child Vanessa gave birth to was not his.

The woman he abandoned me for had lied to him.

For months.

The pregnancy he celebrated.

The future he dreamed about.

The family he sacrificed everything for.

It was all built on deception.

But the cruelest part was…

The child he thought was his was not.

And the child who was truly his…

Was gone.

At least, that was what he believed.

Because Daniel didn’t know one thing.

The night before my procedure, the doctor discovered something unusual.

My pregnancy was not as simple as everyone thought.

The initial reports had been wrong.

The baby was still there.

Alive.

Healthy.

But I had already made my decision.

Or at least…

I thought I had.

When the doctor asked me one last time:

“Are you sure?”

I remembered Daniel’s cold voice.

“You shouldn’t have it.”

I remembered his mother calling me useless.

I remembered him choosing another woman.

And I signed.

Daniel stared at me.

“Emma, please.”

I almost laughed.

Please.

The same man who never asked me for anything before.

Now he was begging.

“Did Vanessa tell you?”

His face changed.

So I knew.

“You found out because her child wasn’t yours.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was obvious.

“How did you know?”

“Because you never came here because you missed me.”

“You came because you lost what you thought you owned.”

His voice became desperate.

“No, Emma.”

“I lost everything.”

I looked at him.

“You lost your illusion.”

“You lost the woman who lied to you.”

“You lost the child you thought was yours.”

“But don’t pretend you lost me.”

“Because you gave me up.”

Daniel stood frozen.

Then he whispered:

“Can I at least know…”

“Where is our baby?”

My fingers tightened around the door.

A question I had spent years trying to avoid.

A secret I carried alone.

I looked at the man in front of me.

The man who had once held my hand and promised forever.

Then destroyed me.

“Why should I tell you?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I’m his father.”

I smiled sadly.

“Are you?”

He froze.

“Because when he needed a father…”

“You weren’t there.”

“When I needed a husband…”

“You weren’t there.”

“When I needed someone to choose us…”

“You chose someone else.”

Daniel left that night.

But he didn’t give up.

For the next few weeks, he appeared everywhere.

Outside my office.

Near my apartment.

Waiting.

Not demanding.

Not ordering.

Just waiting.

The man who once couldn’t spare five minutes for me…

Now spent entire days hoping I would open the door.

But I didn’t.

Because some wounds don’t heal because someone finally regrets causing them.

They heal when you stop needing that person to understand your pain.

One month later.

I received a letter.

No sender.

Only my name.

Inside was a medical report.

My hands froze.

It was from the hospital.

The same hospital where I had gone three years earlier.

At the bottom was a note:

“Patient Emma Carter. Follow-up examination recommended.”

I stared at the paper.

Because there was something I had forgotten.

Three days before the procedure…

The doctor had asked me to return for another examination.

But I never went.

I was too broken.

Too angry.

Too ready to let everything disappear.

I immediately called the hospital.

The nurse checked the record.

Then she became silent.

“Mrs. Carter…”

“Yes?”

“There is something you need to know.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

The nurse lowered her voice.

“Your procedure record was never completed.”

The world went quiet.

“What did you say?”

“The final authorization was missing.”

“According to our system…”

“Your pregnancy continued.”

I couldn’t breathe.

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

“Are you saying…”

The nurse hesitated.

“Your child may be alive.”

At that exact moment…

Someone knocked on my door.

I turned around slowly.

Through the glass, I saw a familiar figure.

Daniel.

But this time…

He wasn’t holding flowers.

He wasn’t holding divorce papers.

He was holding a small box.

And when I opened the door slightly, he whispered the words that changed everything:

“Emma…”

“I found the truth about our son.”
