PART 2: THE DAY I STOPPED WAITING FOR HIM

Two weeks later, I stood in front of my classroom for the last time.

The blackboard still had drawings from my students.
The small gifts they gave me were carefully placed inside a cardboard box.
A little paper camel, a handmade card, and a note that said:

“Miss Morgan, don’t forget us.”

I looked at those words for a long time.

For eight years, I had always been the person who stayed.

I stayed when Ethan was struggling with money.
I stayed when he worked late nights.
I stayed when he said his dreams needed more time.
I stayed when everyone told me I was wasting my youth waiting for a promise that never arrived.

Because I believed love meant patience.

But that day, I finally understood something.

Patience without respect was just another way of abandoning myself.

My colleagues hugged me before I left.

—Are you really moving?

I smiled.

—Yes.

—What about Ethan?

That question used to hurt.

This time, it didn’t.

I simply answered:

—He has already chosen his path.

I didn’t tell them that Ethan called me forty-seven times that week.

I didn’t tell them that he sent messages every night.

“Stella, please answer.”

“We need to talk.”

“You are misunderstanding everything.”

“Chloe and I are not what you think.”

I never replied.

Because for eight years, I had listened to his explanations.

Now I wanted to listen to myself.

Three days before I left, Ethan appeared at my apartment.

The man standing outside my door looked exhausted.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His eyes were full of anger and confusion.

Not because he had lost me.

Because he couldn’t understand why I wasn’t waiting anymore.

—Stella.

I didn’t invite him inside.

—Why are you here?

His expression changed.

As if he expected the woman who loved him for eight years to immediately open the door and forgive him.

—You blocked me.

—Yes.

—You disappeared.

—I moved my life forward.

He stared at me.

—You can’t just throw away eight years because of one misunderstanding.

I almost laughed.

One misunderstanding.

That was how he described it.

Not a marriage certificate with another woman.

Not standing beside Chloe while I was supposed to become his wife.

Not letting the entire world believe Chloe was the woman he chose.

A misunderstanding.

—Ethan, do you know what hurt the most?

He remained silent.

—It wasn’t that you married her.

His face froze.

—It was that you were so certain I would stay.

The words hit him harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

He had never feared losing me.

He feared losing Chloe’s mother’s approval.
He feared losing his reputation.
He feared losing the image of himself as a grateful man.

But losing me?

That had never seemed possible.

—Stella, I did this because I had no choice.

I looked at him.

—Everyone always has a choice.

He lowered his voice.

—If you loved me, you would understand.

I nodded slowly.

—And if you loved me, you would have asked me.

Silence.

For the first time in eight years, Ethan had no answer.

The next morning, I left the city.

I didn’t leave a letter.

I didn’t leave a final message.

Because closure was something I had spent years giving him.

Now it was my turn to have peace.

Six months passed.

My new school was smaller.

The students were louder.
The days were busier.
The city was unfamiliar.

But for the first time in years, my future belonged only to me.

Then one afternoon, I received an unexpected message from an old friend.

“Did you hear about Ethan?”

I stared at the screen.

I didn’t want to ask.

But curiosity won.

“What happened?”

The reply came quickly.

“Chloe’s mother recovered. The doctors said she wasn’t in immediate danger anymore.”

I smiled faintly.

So the reason he destroyed our future no longer existed.

Then another message arrived.

“Ethan filed for divorce.”

I looked at those words.

A year ago, they would have broken my heart.

Now they only felt distant.

“What about Chloe?”

“He said the marriage was only temporary.”

Temporary.

The same word he had used when he asked me to wait.

But this time, nobody was waiting.

A few days later, Ethan found my new address.

He came to my school.

He stood outside the gate until my classes ended.

When he saw me, his eyes changed.

Because I was different.

Not because I had changed my appearance.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I no longer looked at him like he was the center of my world.

—Stella.

I stopped.

—What do you want?

He swallowed.

—I divorced Chloe.

I nodded.

—Congratulations.

His face showed pain.

—That’s all you have to say?

—What else should I say?

He stepped closer.

—I made a mistake.

I looked at him.

—No.

He froze.

—A mistake happens once.

I held his gaze.

—You made thousands of choices.

The wind moved through the school yard.

Children were laughing nearby.

Life continued.

Without him.

—Do you still love me? he asked quietly.

I thought about the girl I was eight years ago.

The girl who waited.
The girl who believed promises mattered more than actions.

Then I smiled.

—I loved the person I thought you were.

His eyes turned red.

—And now?

I picked up my bag.

—Now I love the person I became after leaving you.

I walked away.

Ethan stayed there.

Watching the woman who had once promised to stand beside him until the end.

The difference was that he finally understood something too late.

I hadn’t left because I stopped loving him.

I left because I finally learned that I deserved to be chosen.

And this time…

I chose myself.
