PART 2: THE FALL OF THE PEI EMPIRE

The black car stopped outside the amusement park entrance.

The same place where Brandon Pei was smiling in front of hundreds of cameras.

The same place where he had announced that his marriage existed only in name.

I looked through the window.

Fireworks exploded in the sky.

Hailey Lin stood beside him, wearing a beautiful dress.

The crowd applauded.

Everyone believed they were watching a love story.

Nobody knew they were watching the final celebration of the Pei Group.

My lawyer opened the car door.

“President Shen, everything is ready.”

I nodded.

“Let’s go.”

The moment I stepped into the park, the atmosphere changed.

The reporters immediately recognized me.

The woman who should have been at her father’s funeral.

The wife of the man who was publicly celebrating another woman.

Cameras turned toward me.

Whispers spread.

“Isn’t that Mrs. Pei?”

“Why is she here?”

“Is she going to make trouble?”

I ignored them.

I walked straight toward the stage.

Brandon finally saw me.

For a second, his smile disappeared.

Then he recovered.

“Scarlett.”

His voice carried irritation.

“What are you doing here?”

I looked at him.

“I came because you wanted everyone to witness this.”

Hailey held Brandon’s arm tighter.

Her eyes were full of satisfaction.

“Scarlett, today is not the right day to cause a scene.”

I smiled.

A scene?

That was exactly what Brandon had created.

Only he never expected me to be part of it.

The host nervously approached.

“Mrs. Pei, perhaps this is not…”

I took the microphone.

The entire park became silent.

“Everyone here came to see a love story.”

I looked at Brandon.

“Since Mr. Pei wanted to share his personal life publicly, I think it is only fair that I share something too.”

Brandon frowned.

“Scarlett, stop.”

I continued.

“Three years ago, the Pei Group faced a financial crisis.”

The reporters immediately became interested.

“Many people believed Brandon Pei saved his company through his own ability.”

I paused.

“But that is not the complete truth.”

Behind me, my lawyer connected the documents to the large screen.

The first page appeared.

Emergency funding agreement.

The second.

Debt guarantee authorization.

The third.

Voting rights transfer.

The audience became silent.

“My father, Shen Wei, used his own reputation, resources and assets to protect the Pei Group.”

Brandon’s face changed.

“Turn that off.”

Nobody moved.

He stepped forward.

“Scarlett, this is between our families.”

I looked at him calmly.

“No.”

“This is between the truth and the story you created.”

The screen changed.

A legal document appeared.

The final authorization my father left before his death.

The room erupted.

Reporters began taking photos.

Hailey looked confused.

“What is this?”

Brandon didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

He understood before everyone else.

Three years ago, when my father helped him survive, he didn’t give everything away.

He protected his daughter.

The agreements had conditions.

If the Pei Group violated certain guarantees, all rights would return to Shen Group.

And today…

Those conditions had been activated.

My lawyer stepped forward.

“Mr. Pei.”

“At nine thirty this morning, all required procedures were completed.”

“The Shen Group has officially reclaimed control of the guaranteed assets and voting rights.”

Brandon stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

The lawyer opened another document.

“The Pei Group is no longer under your control.”

Silence.

Then chaos.

The reporters rushed forward.

“Mr. Pei, is this true?”

“Are you facing bankruptcy?”

“Did your father-in-law actually own the controlling agreements?”

Brandon looked at me.

Not with anger.

With disbelief.

“Scarlett…”

“You knew?”

I looked at him.

“My father knew you.”

“He knew that one day you might forget who helped you.”

His face became pale.

Hailey stepped back.

“Brandon…”

For the first time that night, she looked afraid.

Because a man without power was no longer the same man she had chosen.

Brandon turned toward her.

She avoided his eyes.

That small movement was enough.

He finally understood.

The woman he protected.

The woman he sacrificed his marriage for.

Was standing beside him only while he could give her something.

I walked closer.

“You wanted to give her a fairytale.”

“You wanted the world to believe she was the woman who stood beside you when nobody else did.”

I looked at the cameras.

“But the world should also know who stood beside you when you had nothing.”

Brandon lowered his head.

For the first time, he had no words.

The next morning, the news covered everything.

Not the romantic amusement park.

Not the “true love” story.

The headlines were different.

“Pei Group loses control after hidden agreements revealed.”

“Former chairman’s daughter protects her father’s legacy.”

“Business empire collapses overnight.”

I didn’t celebrate.

I didn’t feel happiness from his downfall.

Because my father was still gone.

No amount of revenge could bring him back.

But I had protected the thing he left me.

His dignity.

His life’s work.

A month later, Brandon came to my office.

He looked different.

No expensive confidence.

No arrogant smile.

Just a tired man.

“I was wrong.”

I looked at the documents on my desk.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I thought you needed me.”

I raised my eyes.

“And I thought you loved me.”

Silence.

“I thought because you stayed, you would always stay.”

I smiled faintly.

“That was your biggest mistake.”

“People leave when they stop loving.”

“No.”

“They leave when they finally realize they are no longer respected.”

Brandon looked down.

“Do you hate me?”

I thought about it.

Then shook my head.

“No.”

“That would mean you still have something from me.”

He froze.

Because he understood.

The woman who once loved him had disappeared.

Not because he lost a battle.

Because she stopped fighting.

Years later, people still remembered the night at the amusement park.

The night a businessman tried to show the world his love story.

And instead revealed the end of his empire.

But I remembered something else.

My father’s final lesson.

Never beg someone to value you.

Never chase someone who chooses to leave.

And never forget…

The person who quietly builds an empire can also be the person who knows exactly how to take it back.
