PART 2: The Truth Behind Three Children

Adrian returned home that night earlier than usual.

For four years, I had heard countless excuses.

Meetings.

Business trips.

Emergency calls.

Late nights.

But that night, he arrived before dinner.

I knew immediately.

Something had changed.

When I entered the living room, he was already sitting there.

The same place where he used to sign company documents.

The same place where he once told me Claire was pregnant.

But this time, he looked different.

Not confident.

Not proud.

Lost.

“Elena.”

I put my bag down.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Then he asked:

“Did you know?”

I remained calm.

“Know what?”

His fingers tightened.

“About my condition.”

I looked at him.

And in that moment, I understood.

The truth had finally reached him.

But not because he discovered my pain.

Because he discovered his own.

“No.”

I answered.

“I didn’t.”

It wasn’t a lie.

I didn’t know about his infertility.

But I knew something else.

I knew the moment Claire appeared.

I knew the moment his attention changed.

I knew the moment my marriage stopped being a marriage.

Adrian stared at me.

“You believe me?”

I almost smiled.

“Does it matter?”

His face froze.

“What?”

“For four years, Adrian, you never asked whether I believed you.”

“You only cared whether I accepted it.”

Silence.

The room became painfully quiet.

He lowered his head.

“I thought…”

I interrupted him.

“You thought I would eventually break.”

His eyes moved.

Because I was right.

Everyone thought my silence meant weakness.

Claire thought I was afraid.

His family thought I had no dignity.

Adrian thought I was waiting for him to choose me again.

Nobody understood.

I wasn’t waiting.

I was preparing.

“Where is Claire?”

I asked.

His expression changed.

“She is at home.”

“Did you tell her?”

“No.”

I nodded.

Of course.

The same man who had no problem humiliating me for four years suddenly became afraid of hurting her.

Interesting.

“Are you going to tell her?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He finally whispered:

“Because I don’t know what is true anymore.”

That was the first honest thing he had said to me in years.

I sat down across from him.

“Adrian.”

“Yes?”

“Do you remember when Claire first came to you?”

He looked confused.

“Yes.”

“You came home and told me she was pregnant.”

His expression became complicated.

“I remember.”

“I asked you one question.”

He looked at me.

“Did you love her?”

His breathing stopped.

Because he remembered.

That night, I didn’t ask about the child.

I didn’t ask about betrayal.

I only asked if his heart had already left.

And he couldn’t answer.

“I should have told you the truth then.”

“Yes.”

“But I was afraid.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“You were afraid of losing your image.”

That sentence hurt him.

Because it was true.

Adrian Shen was a man who had spent his entire life protecting his reputation.

Perfect son.

Perfect businessman.

Perfect father.

Perfect husband.

But now one medical report had destroyed the entire story he built.

The next morning, the DNA results arrived.

Adrian opened the email alone.

He didn’t let Claire know.

He didn’t let his family know.

Only him.

The results were clear.

None of the three children were his.

Not Noah.

Not Ethan.

Not Lucas.

The man who had spent four years protecting them…

was not their father.

Adrian sat in his office for almost an hour.

He didn’t move.

The documents in front of him seemed impossible to understand.

Four years.

Three children.

Thousands of memories.

All built on a lie.

His assistant knocked on the door.

“Mr. Shen?”

No answer.

“Mr. Shen, Mrs. Song is here.”

Adrian finally looked up.

“Send her in.”

Claire entered with a smile.

The same beautiful smile she had worn for years.

The smile that had convinced everyone.

“Adrian.”

She walked closer.

“You disappeared yesterday. I was worried.”

He looked at her.

For the first time, he didn’t see the fragile woman who needed protection.

He saw questions.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“Tell me the truth.”

Her smile disappeared slightly.

“What truth?”

“Are Noah, Ethan, and Lucas my children?”

The room became silent.

A second.

Two seconds.

Then Claire laughed softly.

“Why are you asking something so ridiculous?”

Adrian placed the DNA report on the table.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But he noticed.

“Explain.”

She picked up the paper.

Her hands trembled.

“I don’t know what this means.”

“Then explain why none of them are mine.”

Claire became pale.

“Adrian…”

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“For four years, I defended you.”

“I chose you.”

“I destroyed my marriage for you.”

His eyes turned red.

“And now you can’t even tell me the truth?”

Claire’s face changed completely.

The gentle mask disappeared.

“Fine.”

She whispered.

“You want the truth?”

Adrian stared at her.

“Yes.”

She smiled bitterly.

“You were never supposed to find out.”

Those words were enough.

He closed his eyes.

A pain he had never felt before finally arrived.

Not because he lost three children.

Because he realized he had lost himself.

Meanwhile, I was sitting in my lawyer’s office.

The divorce documents were ready.

My lawyer looked at me.

“Are you sure you don’t want to wait?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“But Adrian may now have a reason to return.”

I looked outside the window.

“He is not returning because he finally loves me.”

“He is returning because the truth hurt him.”

My lawyer remained silent.

I signed the final page.

“Elena.”

“Yes?”

“After everything, do you hate him?”

I thought about it.

Then shook my head.

“No.”

“Then what do you feel?”

I looked at the signature on the paper.

“Nothing.”

And that was the thing Adrian would never understand.

The most painful moment for a person is not when someone leaves.

It is when they return…

and discover the door is already closed.

That evening, Adrian came to find me.

He stood outside my apartment.

No confidence.

No pride.

Only regret.

“Elena.”

I opened the door.

He looked at me.

“I know everything.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

He froze.

“You knew?”

“Not about the infertility.”

I looked at him.

“But I knew about the betrayal.”

His eyes filled with pain.

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

I smiled faintly.

“Because I wanted to see how long you would continue choosing a lie.”

Silence.

Then Adrian whispered:

“I lost everything.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“You lost the person who spent four years protecting you from the consequences of your own choices.”

I stepped back.

“The divorce papers are ready.”

His face changed.

“Elena…”

I closed the door gently.

Not angrily.

Not dramatically.

Just finally.

Because some endings don’t need revenge.

Sometimes the greatest punishment is simply allowing someone to live with the truth they spent years avoiding.
