Part 2: The Truth I Hid Before Leaving Madrid

For five years, Adrián Valverde believed I was the woman who abandoned him.

Everyone around him believed the same thing.

They thought I had left because I was tired of waiting.

Because I had found someone better.

Because my love for him had disappeared.

But the truth was much more painful.

I left because I loved him too much.

And because staying would have destroyed everything.

That night, after Adrián called me and asked about Mateo, I sat alone in my room.

The engagement ring was on the table.

A symbol of a future I had accepted without hesitation.

A future that was supposed to be calm.

Simple.

Different from the chaos that followed Adrián wherever he went.

My phone lit up again.

It was a message from an unknown number.

Only four words.

“Did you tell him?”

My fingers froze.

Five years.

Five years and that question still had the power to make my heart race.

I deleted the message.

But I knew the past was already returning.

The next morning, I went to the Valverde Group headquarters.

Not because of Adrián.

Because my father had arranged a business meeting between our families before my wedding.

When I entered the building, everyone stopped.

Some recognized me immediately.

Others whispered.

“Is that Clara?”

“She’s really back.”

“Adrián’s first love.”

I ignored them.

But then I saw her.

Lucía Ortega.

She was standing near the elevator wearing a beautiful dress, surrounded by assistants.

She looked at me and smiled.

“Clara.”

I stopped.

She walked closer.

“I wanted to meet you properly.”

“Why?”

She laughed softly.

“Because everyone talks about you.”

I remained silent.

Lucía looked at me carefully.

“I used to wonder what kind of woman could make Adrián impossible to forget.”

“And now?”

She smiled.

“Now I understand.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“What do you understand?”

“That you are not the woman everyone describes.”

Before I could answer, Adrián appeared behind her.

His expression changed when he saw us together.

“Lucía.”

She turned.

“We were just talking.”

Adrián looked at me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he said:

“Why are you here?”

I smiled.

“Business.”

Only one word.

But I saw the disappointment in his eyes.

He wanted another answer.

Maybe he wanted me to say that I came because of him.

But I didn’t.

Because five years ago, I had waited for him to choose me.

Now I had chosen myself.

Later that afternoon, Mateo came to pick me up.

When Adrián saw him, something changed.

Mateo walked toward me naturally.

He took my hand.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

Adrián watched from a distance.

The man who once believed I would always return to him finally understood something.

I was not waiting anymore.

That night, Adrián appeared at my house.

My father wasn’t there.

Only me.

When I opened the door and saw him, I wasn’t surprised.

“I need answers.”

His voice was low.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

He entered slowly.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

“Why did you leave?”

I looked at him.

“After five years, that’s still the question you want to ask?”

“Yes.”

His eyes were serious.

“Because I never understood.”

I turned away.

“You really don’t remember?”

“Remember what?”

The silence between us became heavy.

Five years ago.

The night before my flight.

I had gone to his apartment because I wanted to tell him I was pregnant.

I wanted to surprise him.

I wanted to tell him that the future we dreamed about was becoming real.

But when I arrived, I heard voices.

Adrián.

And another man.

His father.

They were talking about the Valverde family company.

About a marriage arrangement.

About using my family’s influence to stabilize their business.

Then I heard the sentence that broke me.

“Once Clara becomes part of the family, the Suárez family’s shares will naturally support us.”

I stood outside that door.

Holding the pregnancy test in my hand.

And I understood.

I was not the woman they loved.

I was a piece on a chessboard.

The worst part was not his father’s plan.

It was Adrián’s silence.

He never said no.

He never defended me.

So I left.

The next day, I boarded a plane.

And I lost my baby because of the emotional shock and the complications that followed.

Adrián stared at me.

His face slowly lost all color.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Clara, I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t know because you never asked.”

His lips moved, but no words came.

For the first time, the famous Adrián Valverde had nothing to say.

“I searched for you.”

I laughed softly.

“After how long?”

“After I realized you were gone.”

“Exactly.”

I looked at him.

“You only searched after losing me.”

That sentence hurt him more than anger would have.

Then my phone rang.

Mateo.

I answered.

“I’m fine.”

Adrián heard his voice.

A calm, familiar voice.

A man who was already part of my present.

After I hung up, Adrián whispered:

“Do you love him?”

I looked at the ring on my finger.

“I don’t know.”

His eyes changed.

“But I know something.”

“What?”

“He chose me when I was not a memory.”

Adrián lowered his head.

That night, he finally understood.

For five years, everyone had told him I was his impossible love.

But nobody told him the truth.

Sometimes losing someone does not happen when they leave.

Sometimes it happens years earlier.

When you make them feel alone while they are still standing beside you.

The next weeks passed quickly.

The wedding preparations began.

Everyone expected Adrián to create a scene.

He didn’t.

He disappeared from the headlines.

He stopped appearing at events.

And for the first time in years, people stopped comparing every woman to Clara.

Because Clara was no longer part of Adrián Valverde’s story.

She was writing her own.

On my wedding day, I saw him one last time.

He stood outside the hotel.

No anger.

No desperation.

Only regret.

He approached me.

“Congratulations.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

A long silence followed.

Then he said:

“I spent five years waiting for you to come back.”

“I know.”

“And I thought that meant I loved you.”

I looked at him.

“But?”

He smiled sadly.

“But maybe I was only waiting for the version of you who still loved me.”

Those words surprised me.

Because they were the first honest words he had ever given me.

I nodded.

“Take care, Adrián.”

He stepped back.

“You too, Clara.”

Then he left.

Years later, people would still tell stories about Adrián Valverde’s first love.

About the woman he never forgot.

But they always got one thing wrong.

I was never the woman who returned to reclaim him.

I was the woman who returned after finally learning that my life was worth more than being someone’s unforgettable memory.

And when I walked toward the man waiting for me at the altar…

I didn’t look back.
