PART 2: The Wife Who Disappeared

Michael stood in the middle of the hospital hallway, unable to move.

The nurse’s words kept repeating in his head.

“Mrs. Zhou is no longer here.”

No explanation.

No information.

No permission.

For the first time in three years of marriage, Michael Zhou realized something terrifying.

He didn’t know where his wife was.

He took out his phone and called her.

The call went directly to voicemail.

Again.

Again.

Nothing.

His expression slowly changed.

Not anger.

Not impatience.

Fear.

The nurse looked at him calmly.

—Sir, if you are a family member, you should contact Mrs. Zhou directly.

Michael tightened his jaw.

—She is my wife.

The nurse looked at him for a few seconds.

Then she lowered her voice.

—A husband should know where his wife is when she is lying in an emergency room.

Those words struck him harder than he expected.

Because he knew.

He didn’t know.

For three years, Vantine had always been there.

Waiting at home.

Preparing meals.

Remembering his family’s birthdays.

Cleaning up after Vanessa’s mistakes.

Whenever something happened, he assumed she would forgive him.

Because she always had.

But this time…

She didn’t.

At the same moment, in a private recovery room across the city, Vantine slowly opened her eyes.

The first thing she saw was a white ceiling.

The second thing she felt was peace.

No shouting.

No accusations.

No one telling her she was too sensitive.

A female doctor entered with her medical records.

—Mrs. Zhou, how are you feeling?

Vantine moved slightly.

“My face hurts a little.”

The doctor nodded.

“You were lucky.”

“Your injuries were not minor.”

She placed the report on the table.

“Two facial injuries, several bruises, soft tissue damage.”

“These records will be preserved.”

Vantine looked at the papers.

Preserved.

A simple word.

But after three years of silence, it felt powerful.

“Thank you.”

The doctor hesitated.

—Your husband called several times.

Vantine was silent.

Then she calmly said:

“Don’t give him my location.”

The doctor looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

Vantine looked toward the window.

The city outside continued moving.

People walked.

Cars passed.

The world did not stop because her marriage ended.

“Yes.”

“I am sure.”

That evening, Michael returned home.

The house was exactly the same.

But somehow…

It felt empty.

Vanessa was sitting on the sofa, eating fruit.

When she saw him, she immediately asked:

“Where is sister-in-law?”

Michael didn’t answer.

He walked past her.

For the first time, he looked at his sister differently.

Not as someone innocent.

But as someone he had protected too many times.

Vanessa noticed his expression.

“What happened?”

Michael stopped.

“Why did you hit her?”

Vanessa froze.

Only for a second.

Then she smiled.

“Michael, are you believing her?”

“She probably exaggerated.”

“She always does that.”

Those familiar words.

Those excuses.

He had heard them countless times.

But this time…

He remembered the hospital.

The stitches.

The bruises.

The nurse’s expression.

“She was in the emergency room.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

Michael turned around.

“Because of you.”

Silence.

Then his mother walked downstairs.

“What happened?”

Michael looked at both of them.

And suddenly he realized something.

For years, he had asked Vantine to understand his family.

But nobody had ever asked his family to understand Vantine.

Three days later.

The divorce papers arrived.

Michael stared at the envelope for a long time.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Photos.

Messages.

Everything Vantine had saved.

Every time she had asked for help.

Every time he had ignored her.

At the end was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

“Michael, I stopped leaving because I hated you.”

“I left because I finally remembered that I deserved better.”

His hand trembled.

For the first time, he understood.

Vantine didn’t leave because she wanted revenge.

She left because she had nothing left to lose.

One month later.

The Zhou family received unexpected news.

Vantine had joined an international medical foundation.

She had moved abroad.

She had started a new life.

And the woman they thought could never survive without Michael…

Was doing better than ever.

Michael stood in front of the news article on his computer.

The photo showed Vantine standing on a stage.

Confident.

Independent.

Different.

The headline read:

“Young entrepreneur and philanthropist Vantine Zhou opens a new healthcare project.”

His mother looked at the screen.

“How could she change so much?”

Michael didn’t answer.

Because he finally knew.

She had not changed.

She had simply stopped shrinking herself for them.

Then his phone received a message.

From an unknown number.

Only one line.

“Mr. Zhou, your divorce appointment is tomorrow at nine.”

Michael stared at it.

Tomorrow.

The final moment.

The moment when the woman who had loved him for three years would officially become a stranger.

For some reason…

That thought made his chest tighten.

But he knew one thing.

This time, he couldn’t ask her to forgive him.

Because forgiveness was something she once gave freely.

And he was the one who taught her to stop giving.
