Part 2: The Son He Never Knew Existed

Alejandro stopped six feet away from me.

Five years had changed him.

His face was sharper.

Colder.

But the way he looked at me hadn’t changed at all.

As if I were something that belonged to him and had somehow escaped.

—Elena.

I stood and quietly closed the door behind me.

—Don’t wake him.

His gaze immediately moved toward the room.

—Is he mine?

No greeting.

No apology.

Five years, reduced to four words.

I crossed my arms.

—You don’t get to arrive at one in the morning and interrogate me.

Alejandro’s jaw tightened.

—He’s five.

—Excellent math.

—Elena.

His voice dropped.

—Is Leo my son?

Before I could answer, the door opened behind me.

Leo appeared barefoot, rubbing one eye.

—Mom?

I turned immediately.

—Honey, why are you awake?

Then Leo saw Alejandro.

He stopped.

Alejandro stopped too.

For several seconds, neither moved.

It was almost frightening.

Same eyes.

Same slight frown.

Even the way both tilted their heads while studying a stranger was identical.

Leo looked at me.

—Who’s that man?

Alejandro’s expression cracked.

I knelt.

—Someone I used to know.

Leo considered this.

Then looked at Alejandro again.

—Why is he staring at me?

Alejandro actually looked embarrassed.

Something I had never seen before.

—Because you remind me of someone.

Leo’s eyes narrowed.

—Who?

Alejandro swallowed.

—Me.

My son looked him up and down.

Then said seriously:

—You’re much older.

I nearly laughed.

Marcos coughed to hide his own.

Alejandro didn’t.

He smiled.

A real smile.

And that terrified me more than his anger.

I took Leo back to bed.

When I returned, Alejandro was waiting.

—Tomorrow morning, we’ll do a DNA test.

I stared at him.

—No.

His expression hardened.

—I have a right to know.

—And I had a right to have a career.

Silence.

—I had a right not to wake up one morning and discover that every contract had disappeared because you ordered people to erase me.

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

—You destroyed my career because Valeria wanted me gone.

—That’s not what happened.

I laughed.

—Then explain it.

Alejandro remained silent for several seconds.

Finally:

—I thought you sold information about Valeria to the press.

I froze.

—What?

—Private medical information leaked. The story nearly destroyed her.

My stomach tightened.

—And you believed I did it?

—There was evidence.

—Did you ask me?

No answer.

—Did you call me once?

Still nothing.

I stepped closer.

—You destroyed everything I had without asking whether I was guilty.

His voice became quieter.

—I was wrong.

Those three words came five years too late.

—Yes.

I opened the door.

—You were.

He didn’t leave.

—If Leo is mine, I’m not disappearing again.

I looked directly at him.

—You didn’t disappear, Alejandro.

I did.

—Because you made staying impossible.

The next morning, the internet was chaos.

Leo’s video had reached number one.

Old photographs of Alejandro as a child appeared beside screenshots of my son.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

Then Valeria posted.

One sentence.

“Children should never be used to revive forgotten careers.”

Within minutes, people assumed she meant me.

I was reading the comments when Leo climbed beside me.

—Mom, why are people saying my name?

I locked the phone.

—Because your video became popular.

He smiled.

—Because I’m good at business?

—Apparently.

He looked pleased.

Then someone knocked.

Alejandro.

This time he carried no lawyers.

No security.

Only breakfast.

Leo opened the door before I could stop him.

—Old man!

Alejandro stared at him.

—I’m thirty-five.

Leo shrugged.

—That’s old to me.

Alejandro looked at me.

I turned away so he wouldn’t see my smile.

We ate together.

It was painfully normal.

Leo talked endlessly about dinosaurs, toy trading and how adults made terrible deals because they became emotional.

Alejandro listened to every word.

Then Leo asked:

—Do you have children?

Alejandro’s fork stopped.

His eyes found mine.

—I don’t know.

Leo frowned.

—How can you not know?

I closed my eyes.

Of course my five-year-old would ask the one question capable of destroying the room.

Alejandro answered carefully.

—Because sometimes adults make very big mistakes.

Leo nodded solemnly.

—My mom says mistakes are okay if you fix them.

Alejandro looked at me.

—I hope she’s right.

That afternoon, I agreed to the DNA test.

Not for Alejandro.

For Leo.

I didn’t want my son growing up inside a secret.

The result arrived two days later.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

Alejandro read it without speaking.

Then he sat down.

The most powerful man in entertainment simply sat there staring at one sheet of paper.

—Five years.

His voice broke slightly.

—I lost five years.

I felt no satisfaction.

—You didn’t lose them.

I said quietly:

—You threw away the woman who could have given them to you.

His eyes reddened.

Then his phone rang.

Marcos.

Alejandro answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

—What?

He stood.

—Send it to me.

A file arrived.

He opened it.

Then looked at me.

—Elena, the leak five years ago…

My stomach tightened.

—What about it?

—The investigation was falsified.

He turned the screen toward me.

There were payment records.

Emails.

Internal messages.

Someone had manufactured evidence that made it appear as though I had leaked Valeria’s information.

And the person responsible had been paid through an account belonging to Valeria’s former manager.

Alejandro’s face became terrifyingly calm.

—Marcos reopened everything after seeing Leo.

I kept scrolling.

Then I found an email.

My name appeared in the subject.

“Vargas removal strategy.”

I opened it.

My hands went cold.

The instructions were explicit.

Create the scandal.

Make Alejandro believe Elena betrayed Valeria.

Push him to blacklist her.

But the final message wasn’t from Valeria.

It was addressed to her.

And underneath was a name neither Alejandro nor I expected.

Ricardo Fuentes.

Alejandro’s father.

I looked up.

—Your father?

Alejandro seemed unable to breathe.

Then Marcos sent another document.

An old medical report.

Dated five years earlier.

My pregnancy records.

Someone had accessed them before I disappeared.

Someone inside the Fuentes organization had known I was pregnant.

Alejandro stared at the date.

—My father knew about Leo.

A cold feeling spread through me.

Five years ago, I had believed I escaped before anyone discovered my pregnancy.

I had been wrong.

Alejandro’s phone rang again.

This time it was his father.

He answered on speaker.

Ricardo didn’t bother greeting us.

—Bring the boy home.

Alejandro’s face hardened.

—You knew.

Silence.

—You knew Elena was pregnant.

His father’s answer came calmly.

—Of course I knew.

I felt sick.

Alejandro’s fingers tightened around the phone.

—Then why didn’t you tell me?

Ricardo laughed softly.

—Because five years ago, Elena Vargas was unsuitable to become the mother of the Fuentes heir.

My blood ran cold.

Then he added:

—But circumstances have changed.

Alejandro looked at Leo, who was playing innocently in the next room.

—What circumstances?

His father’s next sentence changed everything.

—Your son is trending nationwide, Alejandro.

A pause.

—And the board has already seen him.

Alejandro went completely still.

Ricardo continued:

—You have forty-eight hours to bring Leo to me voluntarily.

—And if I don’t?

His father’s voice became colder.

—Then I’ll remind Elena exactly how easily the Fuentes family made her disappear the first time.

Alejandro ended the call.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he walked to the window and called Marcos.

—Cancel every meeting.

—Sir?

—Freeze my father’s corporate access.

Marcos went silent.

Alejandro looked at our son through the glass door.

—And assemble the legal team.

I stared at him.

—What are you doing?

He turned toward me.

For the first time, there was no Fuentes heir standing in front of me.

Only Leo’s father.

—Five years ago, I chose my family name over you without asking for the truth.

He picked up the DNA result.

—I’m not making that mistake twice.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

One photograph.

Leo leaving preschool three months earlier.

Another photograph followed.

Leo and me at a supermarket.

Then another.

Leo sleeping against my shoulder on a train.

Someone had been following us long before the television program.

Underneath the photographs were seven words:

“Ask Alejandro why his father needs an heir.”

I looked up slowly.

Alejandro had gone pale.

And that was when I realized something far more frightening than being discovered.

Leo hadn’t become valuable to the Fuentes family because he went viral.

They had been waiting for him all along.
