Part 2: Fourteen Years Stolen

Victoria Blackwood stood frozen beneath the ballroom lights.

Around her, hundreds of guests had stopped whispering.

The livestream was still running.

Adrian looked at his mother.

—Tell me she’s lying.

Victoria’s lips trembled.

—Adrian, this isn’t the place.

—Tell me.

His voice wasn’t loud.

That made it worse.

Victoria looked toward the cameras.

—Turn off the broadcast.

Nobody moved.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

—Leave it on.

Elena instinctively stepped closer to her sons.

Noah whispered:

—Mom, did Grandma really do this?

Victoria flinched at the word “Grandma.”

Adrian heard it too.

Something changed in his eyes.

For fourteen years, his mother had possessed three grandsons she had never met.

Because she had made sure he never knew they existed.

—Did Elena terminate the pregnancy?

Victoria remained silent.

—Did she take five million dollars?

Still nothing.

Adrian took one step forward.

—Did I ever tell you I wanted my child gone?

Victoria finally spoke.

—I was protecting you.

Elena laughed bitterly.

That was enough.

Adrian closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, whatever remained of the devoted son Victoria knew was gone.

—From what?

—From a woman who didn’t belong in our world.

Victoria’s voice strengthened as if fourteen years of justification had suddenly returned.

—You were twenty-four. Blackwood Global was barely surviving. You needed connections, capital, stability. Vanessa’s family could provide all three.

Elena stared at her.

—So you destroyed our marriage.

—I saved my son’s future.

Adrian looked around the ballroom bearing his family name.

Then at the three boys.

—This is the future you saved?

Victoria went pale.

Ethan, the quietest of the triplets, stepped forward.

—Did you know about us?

Victoria looked at him.

For the first time, she had no answer prepared for a child.

—Not exactly.

Liam frowned.

—What does that mean?

Victoria swallowed.

—I knew Elena was pregnant.

Adrian’s hands curled into fists.

—You knew.

—I didn’t know there were three.

—One would have been enough.

His voice cracked.

—One child would have been enough for you to tell me.

Victoria reached toward him.

—Adrian—

He stepped back.

—Don’t touch me.

The room became painfully silent.

Elena had imagined this confrontation many times.

In some versions, she screamed.

In others, Victoria begged.

But now that it was happening, Elena felt strangely empty.

Nothing could return fourteen birthdays.

Fourteen Christmas mornings.

First steps.

First words.

School performances.

Fevers.

Broken arms.

Nightmares.

Every ordinary moment Adrian had never known existed.

Adrian slowly turned toward the boys.

For the first time that evening, the billionaire disappeared.

There was only a man looking at his sons.

—What are your names?

Noah answered first.

—Noah Carter.

—Liam Carter.

Ethan hesitated.

—Ethan Carter.

Adrian repeated each name quietly.

As though memorizing something sacred.

Then he asked:

—Can I speak with you somewhere without cameras?

Noah looked at Elena.

That single glance hurt Adrian visibly.

His sons didn’t look to him for safety.

They looked to their mother.

Elena nodded.

—They decide.

Noah exchanged glances with his brothers.

—Okay.

Twenty minutes later, they sat in Adrian’s private office above the ballroom.

No reporters.

No Victoria.

No advisers.

Adrian opened his safe.

He removed a small black box.

Inside was Elena’s wedding ring.

She stopped breathing.

—You kept it?

—Fourteen years.

His voice was quiet.

—I hated you and still couldn’t throw it away.

Elena looked away.

Adrian then placed an old medical report on the desk.

She recognized the hospital logo immediately.

The document claimed she had voluntarily ended the pregnancy.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

Elena picked it up.

—That’s not my signature.

—I know that now.

Adrian looked destroyed.

—But fourteen years ago, I wanted to believe it.

Elena stared at him.

—Why?

His answer came slowly.

—Because believing you chose to leave was easier than believing I had failed to make you feel safe enough to stay.

Neither spoke.

Then Liam interrupted.

—So whose lipstick was on your shirt?

Adrian blinked.

Elena turned toward him too.

Fourteen years later, the question still mattered.

—Vanessa kissed me at a company celebration.

Elena’s face hardened.

—I pushed her away.

—But you didn’t tell me.

—No.

—And the anniversary night?

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

—I was drunk.

Elena laughed without humor.

—That’s not an answer.

—Nothing happened with Vanessa.

He looked directly at her.

—But I let her answer my phone because I was angry with you after our argument that morning.

Elena remembered it.

She had asked him to stop letting Victoria interfere in their marriage.

Adrian had defended his mother.

—So you let another woman humiliate your wife.

—Yes.

No excuse.

No revision.

Just yes.

—Then your mother didn’t destroy everything alone.

Adrian lowered his head.

—I know.

That answer mattered more than Elena expected.

He wasn’t asking her to rewrite history simply because Victoria had lied.

Victoria created the deception.

But Adrian had left enough cracks for her to use.

Noah leaned forward.

—What happens now?

Adrian looked at him.

—I don’t know.

Then, after a pause:

—But none of you owe me anything.

The boys seemed surprised.

—I want DNA testing, legally, because everything involving inheritance and identity should be documented correctly.

He looked at Elena.

—But whether they want a relationship with me is their choice.

Ethan finally asked:

—Are you really giving away the twenty-five billion?

For the first time that night, Adrian almost smiled.

—I may need to revise my estate planning.

Noah laughed.

Even Elena couldn’t stop the corner of her mouth from moving.

Then someone knocked.

Adrian’s attorney entered.

His expression was grim.

—Mr. Blackwood, we found something.

He placed several documents on the desk.

—After Mrs. Blackwood’s statements downstairs, I ordered an immediate review of the old family records.

Adrian frowned.

—And?

The attorney looked toward Elena.

—The five-million-dollar check Victoria offered Mrs. Carter was never cashed.

—I told you that —Elena said.

—Yes.

He placed another bank statement down.

—But five million dollars left the Blackwood family account anyway.

Adrian’s expression changed.

—Where did it go?

The attorney hesitated.

—Into an account opened under Elena Carter’s name.

Elena stood.

—Impossible.

—The account was closed six months later.

—Who withdrew the money?

The attorney turned another page.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa Whitmore.

Adrian went completely still.

His mother had forged the medical report.

But Vanessa had apparently been involved financially.

Perhaps much more than either of them knew.

Then Noah’s phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

—Mom.

Elena turned.

—What?

Noah showed her the message.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

It had been taken years ago.

Elena was leaving the hospital after learning she was carrying triplets.

Someone had photographed her from across the street.

Below it were six words:

“Victoria wasn’t the only one watching.”

Adrian took the phone.

His face became cold.

Then a second message arrived.

This one contained a photograph of three newborn babies sleeping in hospital bassinets.

Noah.

Liam.

Ethan.

Elena’s blood ran cold.

Those photographs had never been published.

She had never sent them to the Blackwoods.

Adrian stared at the image.

—Someone knew from the beginning.

A final message appeared.

“Ask Vanessa why she paid to keep the Blackwood heirs hidden.”

And suddenly the greatest question was no longer why Adrian had lost fourteen years with his sons.

It was why someone had spent fourteen years making sure he never found them.
