PART 2: THE NAME ON THE ULTRASOUND

Olivia didn’t call me until forty minutes after I left the Summit Club.

By then, I was sitting in the back of a taxi with Ethan’s messages appearing one after another on my screen.

“Please answer me.”

“Emma, don’t make any decisions tonight.”

“We need to talk privately.”

“I’m coming home.”

I stared at the last message.

Home.

It was strange how quickly one word could stop belonging to you.

My phone rang.

Olivia.

I answered immediately.

—Where are you?

—On my way to my sister’s apartment.

There was silence.

Then Olivia said:

—Emma, I need you to listen carefully.

Something in her voice made me straighten.

—What happened?

—Serena left her purse open when she went after Ethan.

I closed my eyes.

—Olivia, I don’t care what she carries in her purse.

—You will care about this.

The taxi stopped at a red light.

Olivia lowered her voice.

—There was an ultrasound envelope inside.

I said nothing.

—It wasn’t from the clinic Serena mentioned tonight.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

—And there was a name written on it.

I swallowed.

—Ethan’s?

—No.

The traffic light changed.

The taxi moved again.

Olivia said the name slowly.

—Marcus Blake.

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand why it sounded familiar.

Then I remembered.

Serena had mentioned a Marcus Blake years ago at another reunion.

Her husband.

Not ex-husband.

Husband.

I sat completely still.

—Serena is married?

—Apparently.

—Maybe Marcus is her brother.

—That’s what I thought.

Olivia paused.

—So I searched him.

My stomach tightened.

—And?

—Marcus Blake and Serena Blake filed for marriage six years ago. I found photographs too. They never divorced.

I looked through the taxi window at Manhattan sliding past in streaks of white and gold.

Suddenly, Serena’s performance at dinner looked completely different.

The carefully timed call.

The speakerphone.

The question about Ethan’s name.

She hadn’t accidentally exposed an affair.

She had staged it.

—Send me everything.

Thirty seconds later, screenshots arrived.

Wedding photographs.

Public records.

And finally, a photograph of Marcus Blake.

I recognized him.

I had seen him before.

Two months earlier.

At Ethan’s company anniversary dinner.

Marcus had been sitting beside Ethan.

They had shaken hands.

They had laughed together.

And Ethan had introduced him to me as one of his company’s investors.

My blood went cold.

This wasn’t just an affair.

Something else was happening.

When I reached my sister’s building, Ethan was already waiting outside.

He must have driven like a madman.

He stepped toward me.

—Emma.

I walked past him.

He caught my wrist.

—Please.

I looked down at his hand.

He released me immediately.

—You said you were going to your sister’s?

—You don’t get to ask where I’m going anymore.

His face tightened.

—I’m not asking as your boyfriend.

—Good, because you’re not my boyfriend.

That landed harder than I expected.

For a moment, he simply stared at me.

Then he whispered:

—Three years can’t disappear in one night.

—They didn’t disappear tonight.

I looked at him.

—You destroyed them over six months.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

—Serena is having my child.

—Are you sure?

His hands stopped.

The silence between us changed.

—What does that mean?

I watched his expression carefully.

—Did you see the medical records yourself?

—Of course.

—Did you attend the appointments?

His jaw tightened.

—She didn’t want me there.

—Did you see a paternity test?

—Emma, she’s sixteen weeks pregnant. Why would I—

—Answer me.

—No.

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the arrogance of betrayal was suddenly astonishing.

Ethan had destroyed our relationship for a child he had apparently never confirmed was his.

His phone rang.

Serena.

He rejected the call.

It rang again.

—Answer it.

—No.

—Answer it, Ethan.

He stared at me before finally putting the phone on speaker.

—Serena.

Her breathing was uneven.

—Where are you?

—With Emma.

Silence.

Then:

—You shouldn’t be with her right now.

I almost admired the audacity.

Ethan’s expression darkened.

—Why?

—I need you.

—For what?

Another pause.

—The baby.

I stepped closer.

—Ask her about Marcus.

Ethan looked at me.

Serena heard.

Her breathing stopped.

—Who is Marcus? —Ethan asked.

Nothing.

—Serena.

—I can explain.

My heart gave one slow beat.

Exactly the same words Ethan had used less than an hour earlier.

Apparently betrayal came with a script.

Ethan’s voice changed.

—Who is Marcus Blake?

Serena began crying.

—My husband.

Ethan went completely still.

I watched the color drain from his face.

—Your what?

—We’re separated.

—You told me you were divorced.

—Emotionally, we were.

I nearly laughed.

Ethan didn’t.

—Is the baby his?

—No.

—Then why is his name on your ultrasound paperwork?

Silence.

This time Serena didn’t even pretend to misunderstand.

Ethan looked at me.

I could see the realization forming.

—How do you know that?

I didn’t answer.

Serena did.

—Did Olivia go through my purse?

—Answer the question.

—I can explain everything if you come back.

—Is the baby mine?

Her voice broke.

—Ethan—

—Is. The baby. Mine?

The line went dead.

Ethan stared at the phone.

Then he called her again.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

I stepped toward the building.

—Emma, wait.

I stopped.

His face looked shattered.

Hours earlier, I might have wanted that.

Now I felt nothing except exhaustion.

—If the baby isn’t mine—

I turned around slowly.

—Don’t finish that sentence.

He froze.

—Because if you’re about to tell me that this changes what you did to me, it doesn’t.

—That’s not what I meant.

—You cheated before you knew she was pregnant.

He lowered his eyes.

—You lied before there was a baby.

Silence.

—You came home to me after being with her.

His face tightened.

—And when she told you she was pregnant, you continued lying to both of us.

I stepped closer.

—Whether that child is yours or Marcus’s changes your problem with Serena.

—It changes nothing about your problem with me.

I turned away.

This time he didn’t follow.

The next morning, I woke to twenty-three missed calls.

Most were from Ethan.

Three were from Olivia.

One was from an unknown number.

There was also a voicemail.

I expected Serena.

Instead, a man’s voice spoke.

—Emma Carter, my name is Marcus Blake.

I sat upright.

—I believe my wife Serena has been seeing Ethan Walker.

He paused.

—But that’s not why I’m contacting you.

My hand tightened around the phone.

—Ethan and I are business partners. Three months ago, I discovered money missing from one of our investment accounts.

My breathing slowed.

—I initially believed Serena was helping Ethan move it.

Another pause.

—Last night, Serena came home terrified. She told me Ethan had discovered the pregnancy documents.

I stared at the wall.

Then Marcus said the sentence that changed everything.

—Emma, Serena isn’t sixteen weeks pregnant.

I replayed it.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then I called him.

He answered immediately.

—You heard the voicemail.

—What do you mean she’s not sixteen weeks pregnant?

Marcus exhaled.

—She’s twenty-four weeks.

Six months.

My mind raced backward.

Six months ago was when Ethan said the affair began.

Marcus continued.

—And before you ask, yes, I’ve already done the math.

—Are you the father?

—I don’t know.

That answer surprised me.

—Then why did Serena tell Ethan sixteen weeks?

—I think she needed Ethan to believe conception happened after their affair started.

I got out of bed.

—Why?

—That’s what I’m trying to understand.

There was a knock at my sister’s door.

I froze.

Marcus continued speaking.

—There’s something else.

The knocking came again.

Harder.

I walked into the hallway.

—What?

—The missing money wasn’t transferred to Serena.

My hand reached the door handle.

—Where did it go?

Marcus was silent for a second.

—An account registered under your name.

I stopped breathing.

—That’s impossible.

—That’s what I thought.

Another knock.

Then Ethan’s voice came through the door.

—Emma, open the door. We have a serious problem.

Marcus heard him.

—Don’t sign anything Ethan gives you.

I stared at the door.

—Why?

Marcus’s answer came quietly.

—Because according to the company records, you authorized every transfer.

My knees almost gave way.

—I never authorized anything.

—I believe you.

—Then who did?

Marcus hesitated.

—Someone with access to Ethan’s corporate credentials and copies of your identification.

Outside, Ethan knocked again.

—Emma!

I opened the door.

He stood there pale, holding a thick brown envelope.

But he wasn’t alone.

Two men in dark suits stood behind him.

One showed me an identification card.

—Emma Carter?

—Yes.

—We need to ask you some questions regarding approximately eight million dollars transferred from Walker-Blake Capital.

I looked at Ethan.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked genuinely terrified.

Then I noticed something written across the envelope in his hand.

My name.

Underneath it was a signature.

Mine.

Except I had never written it.

And suddenly I understood why Serena had wanted our relationship to explode publicly.

The pregnancy wasn’t the scandal.

It was the distraction.

Someone had spent months preparing to make me responsible for something much bigger.
