PART 2: THE BOY HE ERASED WITH ME BECAME IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE

Alejandro stopped at the end of the hallway.

For five years, I had imagined what would happen if we met again.

I thought I would hate him.

Instead, I felt strangely calm.

His eyes passed over me and landed on the folding bed behind my chair.

Leo was asleep beneath a thin blanket, one hand still closed around his blue marble.

Alejandro took one step forward.

I stood.

—Don’t wake him.

He stopped immediately.

That surprised me.

The Alejandro I remembered never stopped because someone asked.

His voice was barely audible.

—How old is he?

—Five.

—When is his birthday?

I didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

—Elena.

—You don’t get to arrive at one in the morning and interrogate me.

His jaw tightened.

—Is he mine?

I could have lied.

But Leo deserved better than another secret.

—Yes.

Alejandro went completely still.

Then he looked back at the child.

For the first time since I’d known him, Alejandro Fuentes looked powerless.

—You were pregnant when you left?

—Yes.

—Why didn’t you tell me?

I almost laughed.

—I came to your office with the ultrasound.

His expression changed.

I continued:

—You were with Valeria.

Silence.

—I heard enough.

—Elena, what you heard—

—Doesn’t matter anymore.

He stepped closer.

—I had a right to know.

Something inside me finally cracked.

—And I had a right to my career.

He stopped.

—I had a right to defend myself before you decided I was guilty of whatever Valeria accused me of.

My voice remained quiet because Leo was sleeping.

—You didn’t ask me a single question, Alejandro. You just ordered everyone to erase me.

His face hardened.

—You leaked information about Valeria.

—No.

—There was proof.

—There was whatever you wanted to believe.

Before he could answer, Leo moved.

His eyes opened.

—Mom?

I immediately went to him.

—I’m here.

Then Leo noticed Alejandro.

He sat up.

—Who is he?

Alejandro looked at me.

For once, he didn’t try to control the answer.

I crouched beside the bed.

—His name is Alejandro Fuentes.

Leo blinked.

—The rich man?

I nearly smiled.

Alejandro didn’t.

Leo studied his face for several seconds.

Then touched his own nose.

—We look alike.

Alejandro swallowed.

—A little.

Leo shook his head.

—A lot.

That was my son.

Five years old and already impossible to deceive.

The next morning, the internet did what I had feared.

Leo’s video reached number one.

Old photographs of Alejandro as a child appeared beside screenshots of my son.

Then came photographs of me.

ELENA VARGAS RETURNS AFTER FIVE YEARS.

THE ACTRESS FUENTES ENTERTAINMENT BURIED IS LEO’S MOTHER.

IS ALEJANDRO FUENTES THE FATHER?

By noon, reporters surrounded the production entrance.

The network offered me private security.

I accepted only because Leo was involved.

Then Alejandro called.

—I’ll handle it.

I almost hung up.

—You “handled” my career five years ago.

He became silent.

—You’re right.

Those two words surprised me more than an argument would have.

That afternoon, Fuentes Entertainment announced a press conference.

Alejandro stood alone before dozens of journalists.

Someone immediately shouted:

—Is Leo Vargas your son?

Alejandro answered carefully.

—Leo is a child. His private life will not become entertainment for this company.

Another reporter asked:

—Did Elena Vargas conceal your child?

Alejandro’s expression changed.

—Do not attack his mother.

Then came the question that silenced the room.

—Mr. Fuentes, did you blacklist Elena Vargas five years ago?

Alejandro looked directly into the cameras.

—Yes.

My breath caught.

—I authorized actions against Ms. Vargas’s career based on information I believed at the time.

A reporter interrupted:

—Do you still believe that information?

Alejandro paused.

—No.

That single word detonated across the industry.

An independent review began.

And within seventy-two hours, the first lie surfaced.

The emails supposedly proving that I had leaked Valeria’s private information had never originated from my device.

They came from a computer inside Fuentes Entertainment.

More precisely, from an administrative account assigned to Valeria’s manager.

Alejandro came to my hotel carrying the report.

I read it twice.

—So now you believe me?

His face tightened.

—I should have believed you then.

—No.

I placed the papers down.

—You should have investigated before destroying someone.

He had no answer.

I didn’t forgive him.

But I allowed him to see Leo.

Slowly.

On my terms.

The first visit lasted one hour.

Alejandro arrived with an enormous remote-controlled sports car.

Leo stared at it.

Then asked:

—Can you play chess?

Alejandro looked confused.

—Yes.

Leo pushed the expensive car aside.

—Then sit down.

Alejandro lost three games.

I had never enjoyed silence more.

Weeks passed.

Alejandro stopped bringing gifts.

He started bringing time.

He learned that Leo hated tomatoes.

That he slept with one foot outside the blanket.

That he became quiet when upset instead of crying.

That he loved astronomy but was afraid of elevators.

None of those things could be purchased.

Meanwhile, the investigation into my blacklist widened.

And then something strange happened.

Alejandro called me late one evening.

—Elena, I need you to see something.

I almost refused.

Then he said:

—It’s about the order that erased you.

At Fuentes Entertainment, he opened an archived executive file.

There it was.

My name.

ELENA VARGAS.

Underneath:

REMOVE FROM ALL ACTIVE AND FUTURE INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS.

I stared at him.

—That’s your order.

—No.

I turned.

Alejandro looked disturbed.

—I ordered you removed from one Fuentes production while Valeria’s accusation was investigated.

I laughed bitterly.

—Convenient memory.

—Look at the authorization code.

He enlarged the document.

His original instruction was still buried in the revision history.

TEMPORARILY SUSPEND ELENA VARGAS FROM PROJECT 417 PENDING INTERNAL REVIEW.

Then, eleven minutes later, someone had replaced it.

The temporary suspension became an industry-wide blacklist.

I stared at the screen.

—Who had permission to modify your orders?

Alejandro’s face darkened.

—Three people.

One was dead.

One had retired years earlier.

The third was Marcos.

His assistant.

The same man who had investigated Leo.

We called him.

No answer.

Alejandro sent security to his apartment.

Empty.

His company phone was on the kitchen table.

His laptop was gone.

Then finance discovered something worse.

For five years, money had been leaving Fuentes Entertainment through dozens of small production companies.

The transfers began the same week I disappeared.

Someone had used Alejandro’s executive credentials to approve them.

Total amount:

More than eighty million.

Alejandro stared at the figure.

—Marcos.

But I wasn’t convinced.

—Why would your assistant destroy my career to steal money?

Alejandro didn’t answer.

The next morning, Valeria answered that question for us.

She came to my studio.

No makeup.

No cameras.

No tears.

She looked nothing like the fragile superstar Alejandro had spent years protecting.

She placed a flash drive on my desk.

—I need protection.

I stared at her.

—From whom?

—Marcos.

Alejandro stepped forward.

—Where is he?

Valeria laughed nervously.

—You still don’t understand.

She looked at me.

—Marcos didn’t hate Elena.

I frowned.

—Then why destroy me?

—Because you were becoming too valuable.

She inserted the drive into my computer.

Documents appeared.

Contracts.

Private investments.

Corporate projections.

Then one file carrying my name.

I opened it.

Five years earlier, before my disappearance, three major studios had quietly approached Fuentes Entertainment about buying out my contract.

My projected international value was enormous.

If my career continued growing, my contract contained a clause granting me participation in several future productions.

I had never known.

Alejandro apparently hadn’t either.

But Marcos had.

Valeria whispered:

—He needed your contract worthless.

—Why?

She opened another file.

After I disappeared, my abandoned projects had been transferred to a newly created subsidiary.

That subsidiary later became extraordinarily profitable.

Its hidden beneficial owner wasn’t Alejandro.

It was Marcos.

Alejandro stared at Valeria.

—You helped him.

She lowered her eyes.

—I gave him access.

—Why?

Her answer was barely audible.

—Because he promised me your company.

Silence.

Then Valeria said the sentence that changed everything.

—And because Marcos isn’t really Marcos Rivera.

Alejandro froze.

Valeria turned the laptop around.

An old birth certificate appeared.

Name:

MARCOS FUENTES.

Father:

RICARDO FUENTES.

Alejandro’s father.

Alejandro sat down slowly.

—My father had another son?

Valeria nodded.

—Before you were born.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Marcos hadn’t joined Fuentes Entertainment merely as an assistant.

He had entered the family business that he believed should have belonged to him.

And I had accidentally become an obstacle.

My growing career was increasing the value of the division Alejandro controlled.

So Marcos used Valeria’s jealousy.

Used Alejandro’s distrust.

Used one cruel temporary order and expanded it into complete destruction.

But that didn’t make Alejandro innocent.

He understood that too.

He looked at me.

—I started it.

I said nothing.

—I gave him the weapon.

That was the first time Alejandro accepted responsibility without adding an excuse.

The evidence was turned over to investigators and company auditors.

Marcos was eventually located abroad.

The financial scheme unraveled.

Valeria’s involvement became public.

Her contracts disappeared almost as quickly as mine once had.

The difference was that I didn’t celebrate.

I knew exactly what it felt like to watch an entire life collapse.

One year later, I returned to acting.

Not through Fuentes Entertainment.

I founded my own production company with Clara.

Our first film barely had enough money for proper promotion.

It premiered at a small festival.

By the end of the year, it had become an unexpected hit.

When my name appeared on the screen, Leo stood on his seat.

—That’s my mom!

Everyone laughed.

I cried.

Alejandro was sitting three rows behind us.

Not beside me.

Behind us.

That was where our relationship stood.

He became Leo’s father.

A real one.

School pickups.

Football matches.

Doctor appointments.

Missed business dinners because Leo had a science exhibition.

But he never became my husband again.

One evening, after dropping Leo home, Alejandro stood outside my door.

—Elena.

—Yes?

—I spent years thinking that if I had enough power, I could control what people saw.

I waited.

He smiled sadly.

—Then our five-year-old son went viral with a blue marble and destroyed every illusion I had.

I smiled despite myself.

He continued:

—I know apologizing doesn’t return those years.

—No.

—And being Leo’s father doesn’t give me a right to you.

I looked at him.

That sentence mattered more than all the expensive apologies he could have offered.

—Goodnight, Alejandro.

—Goodnight, Elena.

I closed the door.

Inside, Leo was sitting at the table trading collectible cards with Clara’s son.

He looked up.

—Mom, I made a great deal.

—Should I be worried?

—Probably.

I laughed.

Five years earlier, Alejandro Fuentes had spent a fortune making Elena Vargas disappear.

Now my company employed forty-three people.

My second film was entering production.

My son had two parents who finally understood that he belonged to neither of us.

And my name was mine again.

Not Alejandro’s scandal.

Not Valeria’s rival.

Not the woman the industry had erased.

Elena Vargas.

That was enough.

Sometimes the most satisfying revenge isn’t destroying the people who buried you.

It’s becoming impossible to bury again.
