PART 2: THE BRIDE WHO NEVER ARRIVED

I opened my eyes the next morning.

Adrian was asleep in the chair beside me.

His hand still rested near mine.

I stared at him through the narrow opening between the bandages.

For five years, waking beside that face had made me feel safe.

Now I felt nothing.

A nurse entered.

Adrian woke immediately.

“Emma?”

I slowly turned toward him.

His eyes filled with relief so convincing that, for one dangerous second, I almost questioned what I had heard.

Then he leaned closer.

“Thank God.”

I forced my voice to tremble.

“My face…”

Adrian took my hand.

“Don’t think about that.”

Perfect answer.

Not the doctors will help you.

Not we’ll find the best specialist.

Just don’t think about it.

“The wedding?” I whispered.

He hesitated.

Only slightly.

“We can postpone it.”

“No.”

His eyes sharpened.

I squeezed his fingers.

“I still want to marry you.”

Something relaxed inside him.

He believed me.

“Emma…”

“I don’t care what I look like.”

I swallowed.

“As long as you still want me.”

Adrian bent down and kissed my hand.

“Always.”

I nearly felt sick.

But I smiled beneath the bandages.

That afternoon, Adrian left for a supposed meeting.

The second the door closed, I pressed the nurse-call button.

When the nurse arrived, I asked for Marcus.

He came forty minutes later.

The moment he saw that I was awake, all color left his face.

“You heard us.”

It wasn’t a question.

“Everything.”

Marcus sat down heavily.

“Emma, I’m sorry.”

“How much can you prove?”

He stared at me.

I repeated:

“Not what you know. What can you prove?”

His expression changed.

“Messages.”

“Keep going.”

“Payments.”

My heartbeat accelerated.

“The person who attacked you was paid through an intermediary.”

“Can it be connected to Adrian?”

“Possibly.”

“And Bella?”

Marcus looked toward the door.

“Emma…”

“Marcus.”

He lowered his voice.

“Bella and Adrian have been together for years.”

I closed my eyes.

Even knowing it still hurt.

“And Leo?”

“Adrian believes Leo is his son.”

Believes.

My eyes opened.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus shook his head.

“Another problem for another day.”

I understood.

First, I needed to survive Adrian.

Then I could uncover everything else.

“Help me.”

Marcus stared at me.

“If Adrian discovers—”

“He already destroyed enough of my life.”

I looked directly at him.

“I’m not asking you to fight him.”

“I’m asking you to preserve the truth.”

Marcus agreed.

Quietly.

From that moment, we created two versions of Emma Monroe.

The first existed for Adrian.

She cried when doctors entered.

She asked whether he would still love her.

She apologized for ruining the wedding.

She pretended to be terrified he might leave.

Adrian loved that Emma.

Because she needed him.

The second Emma existed only when the hospital door closed.

That Emma spoke with investigators.

That Emma authorized an independent attorney.

That Emma requested her complete medical history.

And what my attorney discovered changed everything.

My previous pregnancy losses had never been properly investigated.

Several prescriptions in my records had been issued through a private clinic associated with one of Adrian’s companies.

I remembered Adrian bringing me vitamins.

Water.

Medicine whenever I felt unwell.

Always smiling.

Always caring.

I gave every record to my attorney.

“Don’t tell me what you suspect,” she said.

“We document what can actually be established.”

That sentence saved me from becoming reckless.

Evidence first.

Anger later.

Three days before the wedding, Adrian brought me a white box.

Inside was a veil.

“I had it altered.”

I touched the fabric.

“You still want the ceremony?”

“More than anything.”

Of course he did.

Bella wanted her walk down the aisle.

And Adrian still needed Emma Monroe legally attached to him afterward.

So I gave him exactly what he wanted.

Confidence.

“Then don’t cancel.”

His eyes widened.

“Emma?”

“Have the wedding.”

For the first time since the attack, Adrian genuinely smiled.

He kissed my forehead.

“You won’t regret this.”

He was right.

I wouldn’t.

The wedding morning arrived.

Hundreds of guests filled Vale Manor.

The ceremony was being covered by entertainment media because Adrian’s management had announced that, despite the “terrible incident,” love would prevail.

I watched the broadcast from a private medical suite across the city.

At exactly eleven, Bella arrived at the manor.

White dress.

White veil.

My wedding flowers.

My orchestra.

My altar.

Adrian stood waiting.

Marcus texted me one sentence.

They’re beginning.

I replied:

So are we.

My attorney nodded to the investigators waiting outside.

At 11:07, Adrian’s company received formal preservation demands concerning financial and communication records connected to the attack.

At 11:09, his agency’s legal department was notified.

At 11:11, several people involved in arranging payments were contacted for questioning.

And at 11:14, while Bella was still walking toward the altar, Adrian received a message.

He looked at his phone.

Marcus later told me his face changed instantly.

Bella whispered:

“Adrian?”

He didn’t answer.

Another message arrived.

Then another.

His manager rushed toward him.

The ceremony stopped.

Hundreds of guests began whispering.

And then the doors opened.

Not for me.

For Marcus.

He walked down the aisle holding a large envelope.

Adrian stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

Marcus stopped several feet away.

“Something I should have done earlier.”

He handed the envelope to Adrian.

Inside was my statement ending the engagement.

A letter from my attorney.

And the eight-carat ring he had given me.

Adrian looked around wildly.

“Where is Emma?”

Marcus answered quietly.

“Somewhere you can’t control her.”

Bella grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“Forget her. We can still finish.”

That was when Adrian finally looked at Bella.

Really looked at her.

Because another document had fallen from the envelope.

A photograph.

Marcus had included it without telling me.

Bella leaving a private pediatric clinic with four-year-old Leo.

Beside her was another man.

Adrian picked it up.

“Who is that?”

Bella froze.

Marcus said nothing.

Adrian looked at the date.

Then at Bella.

Then back at the photograph.

The man beside her wasn’t a stranger.

He was Julian Vale.

Adrian’s older brother.

According to Marcus, Adrian went completely silent.

Because four years earlier, while Adrian was hiding Bella and claiming her child as his own, Julian had quietly been paying every one of Leo’s medical and school expenses.

Adrian called me seventeen times that afternoon.

I answered none.

By sunset, my attorney had moved me to a specialist treatment center under strict privacy.

I changed my number.

My address.

My representatives.

Everything Adrian once controlled disappeared from his reach.

Months passed.

My recovery was slow.

There were difficult days.

But for the first time in five years, every decision about my life belonged to me.

Adrian’s career did not vanish overnight.

Reality was less theatrical than that.

Investigations took time.

Evidence had to be authenticated.

Witnesses had to speak.

But the perfect public image he had protected so carefully began to fracture under questions he could no longer silence.

Marcus eventually testified about what he knew.

And Bella?

She disappeared from Adrian’s side almost immediately.

The wedding she had wanted never happened.

One evening, my attorney visited carrying a sealed evidence envelope.

“We recovered something from an old cloud backup.”

“What?”

“A recording.”

My hands tightened.

“Of Adrian?”

She nodded.

“It predates the attack.”

I pressed play.

Adrian’s voice filled the room.

Then another voice answered him.

A woman.

Not Bella.

I recognized it immediately.

My attorney watched my face.

“Emma?”

I couldn’t speak.

Because the woman discussing my wedding, my medical records, and Adrian’s plans wasn’t his secret lover.

It was someone who had known me long before Adrian ever entered my life.

Someone I had trusted enough to make her the executor of my mother’s estate.

And before the recording ended, she said one sentence that changed everything:

“Once Emma marries you, the Monroe inheritance becomes accessible. Until then, don’t let her discover what her mother actually left her.”

Suddenly I understood.

Bella had never been the real reason Adrian chose me.

Neither had fame.

Neither had love.

The answer had been waiting inside my mother’s will for years.
