Part 2: The Evidence They Never Expected

The hallway froze.

Even the contractions that had been tearing through my body seemed to pause for a heartbeat.

Logan stared at the gray-haired man standing beside Tessa as though he had seen a ghost.

“No…” he whispered.

The old man calmly removed his rain-soaked coat, revealing the dark blue suit beneath. His silver hair was neatly combed despite the storm outside, and his sharp eyes swept across everyone gathered in the corridor.

“Good afternoon,” he said evenly. “My name is Arthur Monroe.”

Every member of the Hart family recognized that name.

Arthur Monroe had been my father’s attorney for over thirty years.

More importantly, he was the executor of every trust, every investment, and every legal document my father had left behind.

Logan’s face lost what little color remained.

“You… you’re retired.”

“I postponed retirement,” Arthur replied. “Apparently, someone has been forging documents in my absence.”

Silence.

The two police officers stepped forward without haste, but their presence was enough to make several nurses instinctively move away from Logan.

Victoria forced herself to smile.

“There must be some misunderstanding. This is a family matter.”

“One involving fraud, embryo tampering, medical conspiracy, identity theft, document forgery, and attempted coercion,” Arthur answered. “Those are criminal matters.”

Camille’s bouquet slipped from her trembling fingers.

The carnations scattered across the polished floor.

“No…” she murmured. “That’s impossible.”

Tessa folded her arms.

“You should’ve checked whether the hospital’s security cameras were really under your control.”

Logan turned sharply toward Stella.

“You said everything was deleted.”

Stella’s lips parted.

“I… I was told…”

Arthur interrupted.

“Deleted from one server.”

He opened a leather folder.

“Unfortunately for all of you, hospitals maintain multiple encrypted backups.”

Logan staggered back a step.

My contraction hit again.

Pain exploded through my abdomen.

A nurse instinctively reached toward me.

I grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t let Stella touch me.”

The nurse hesitated.

Then she nodded.

Arthur looked directly at the hospital director, who had just rushed into the hallway after hearing the commotion.

“I am requesting an immediate replacement of the surgical team,” he announced. “Dr. Stella Reed is under investigation for potential conflict of interest and medical misconduct.”

The director glanced between Arthur, the police officers, and me.

Then he looked at Logan.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, he made his decision.

“Dr. Reed,” he said quietly.

“You’re suspended from this operation.”

Stella’s eyes widened.

“You can’t—”

“I just did.”

Her face turned white.

“You’re making a mistake!”

“No,” the director replied.

“My mistake was trusting you.”

Two senior obstetricians emerged from the operating room, still wearing sterile gowns.

One of them approached my stretcher.

“Mrs. Hart?”

“My name,” I corrected through gritted teeth, “is Nora Reed.”

He nodded respectfully.

“Mrs. Reed, we’re taking over.”

For the first time since Logan began his confession…

I felt safe.

Almost.

Logan suddenly lunged toward the stretcher.

“You’re not taking her anywhere!”

One of the officers immediately stepped between us.

“This is your final warning.”

“You don’t understand!” Logan shouted.

“If she changes her mind, Camille loses everything!”

There it was.

Not the baby.

Not love.

Everything.

His carefully constructed future.

Arthur slowly removed another envelope from his briefcase.

“Actually,” he said.

“She already has.”

Logan frowned.

“What?”

Arthur handed me the envelope.

“Your father anticipated that someone might one day attempt to manipulate your medical decisions.”

Even through the pain, I blinked.

“My father?”

“He left sealed instructions.”

My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

His handwriting.

Strong.

Steady.

Exactly as I remembered.

My dearest Nora,

If you are reading this, then someone has attempted to use your kindness against you.

Never confuse generosity with obligation.

The moment another person steals your choice, every promise you ever made becomes void.

Protect yourself first.

Always.

My vision blurred.

Not from tears.

From another contraction.

Arthur gently took the letter back before it slipped from my hands.

“There is one more thing.”

He turned toward Logan.

“The restaurant group you currently manage?”

Logan stiffened.

“Yes?”

“You’ve been fired.”

“What?”

“Effective immediately.”

“You can’t fire me!”

Arthur smiled faintly.

“I can.”

He produced another document.

“Nora signed this yesterday morning.”

Logan’s head snapped toward me.

“You couldn’t have!”

I looked at him.

“I did.”

“You were blind!”

“I wasn’t helpless.”

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Tessa couldn’t hide her grin.

“You really thought the temporary blindness made her incapable of thinking?”

Logan’s breathing became ragged.

“No…”

“She couldn’t have known.”

“I didn’t,” I answered calmly.

“I simply learned never to sign anything without reading it twice.”

His eyes slowly drifted toward Stella.

Realization spread across his face.

“You told her?”

Stella shook her head violently.

“No!”

“I swear!”

Arthur answered instead.

“The bank did.”

“What?”

“You attempted to access Nora’s personal trust three separate times.”

“I was her husband!”

“You were never an authorized trustee.”

The hallway remained eerily quiet.

Even Victoria had stopped talking.

For the first time all afternoon…

Nobody defended Logan.

Another contraction ripped through me so violently that I cried out.

The senior obstetrician immediately leaned closer.

“We cannot wait much longer.”

Arthur nodded.

“Take her.”

Logan suddenly fell to his knees.

Not from guilt.

From desperation.

“Nora!”

His voice cracked.

“If you walk into that operating room now… everything we’ve built together disappears!”

I looked down at him.

Everything?

No.

Everything had disappeared the day he decided my body belonged to someone else.

“I have only one question.”

He looked up hopefully.

“Yes?”

“If Camille couldn’t survive pregnancy…”

I shifted my gaze toward her pale face.

“…why didn’t either of you ask me?”

Camille burst into tears.

Real tears this time.

“I knew…”

She whispered.

“I knew you would never agree.”

Exactly.

She had known.

Logan had known.

Stella had known.

Every single one of them understood that consent mattered.

That was why they never asked.

The answer settled over the hallway heavier than any accusation.

Nobody could defend it.

Nobody even tried.

The obstetrician squeezed my hand.

“It’s time.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

As the nurses pushed my stretcher toward the operating room, Logan screamed my name one final time.

“Nora!”

I never looked back.

Because behind me stood the people who had stolen my choice.

Ahead of me…

Waited the child who had never committed a single sin.

Whatever happened after today—

The truth would finally be born alongside that baby.
