Part 2: The Price of Silence

Sebastian’s eyes moved from Daniel…

To Natalie…

Then to the stack of legal documents resting on my hospital bed.

For the first time in three years, the confidence on his face cracked.

“What is this?” he repeated.

Daniel calmly closed the folder.

“It is a criminal complaint.”

Silence settled over the room.

Sebastian laughed once.

A short, disbelieving laugh.

“Against whom?”

Daniel met his gaze without blinking.

“You.”

The smile disappeared.

“You’ve lost your mind.”

“No,” I answered quietly.

“I finally found it again.”

Sebastian looked at me as though he had never seen me before.

“You would really send the father of your child to prison?”

“The father of my child?”

I smiled faintly.

“The man who ordered his bodyguards to beat his son’s mother until she suffered a brain hemorrhage?”

His jaw tightened.

“I never ordered anyone to kill you.”

“You ordered them to ‘teach me a lesson.'”

“I was angry.”

“So were they.”

His hands slowly curled into fists.

“You have no proof.”

Natalie finally spoke.

“Actually…”

She placed a tablet on the bedside table.

“The hospital security cameras captured your arrival.”

Sebastian frowned.

“What does that prove?”

“It proves that you arrived at the emergency entrance before the ambulance.”

His expression froze.

Daniel continued.

“You knew she had been attacked before the hospital informed your family.”

Sebastian said nothing.

Daniel opened another file.

“We also subpoenaed the phone records.”

Another silence.

“There was a call from your private number to the head of your security team exactly four minutes before the assault.”

Sebastian’s breathing became noticeably heavier.

“You obtained those records illegally.”

“No.”

Daniel smiled politely.

“The court did.”

For the first time…

Fear appeared in Sebastian’s eyes.

Real fear.

He took one step toward my bed.

“Amelia.”

His voice softened.

“We don’t need lawyers.”

“No?”

“We can solve this ourselves.”

I looked at the bouquet of white roses.

“They’re beautiful.”

He nodded immediately.

“I remembered they’re your favorite.”

“They used to be.”

His hand froze in midair.

“I don’t like white roses anymore.”

The room became painfully quiet.

“I don’t understand.”

“You ruined them.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“Now every time I see white roses…”

“I remember blood.”

Sebastian suddenly dropped to one knee.

Daniel instinctively stepped forward.

I raised a finger.

“No.”

I wanted to hear him.

“Amelia.”

His voice trembled.

“I made mistakes.”

“Mistakes?”

“I let Vanessa manipulate me.”

“And?”

“I drank.”

“And?”

“I lost control.”

“And?”

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Because there was nothing left to blame.

Only himself.

Natalie interrupted softly.

“Mr. Cole.”

He looked toward her.

“As a court-appointed social worker, I have one question.”

He nodded.

“If the court grants Mrs. Reed primary custody…”

His face darkened.

“It won’t.”

Natalie ignored him.

“…would you cooperate for Leo’s emotional well-being?”

“No.”

The answer escaped him instinctively.

Too quickly.

Everyone in the room heard it.

Including Daniel.

Including me.

Natalie quietly wrote something into her report.

Sebastian immediately realized what he had done.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You answered honestly,” Natalie replied.

“Thank you.”

Three days later…

The emergency custody hearing began.

I was still confined to a wheelchair.

My ribs were wrapped tightly beneath my clothes.

The bruises around my neck had only begun to fade.

Sebastian entered the courtroom in a perfectly tailored navy suit.

Vanessa sat behind him.

She still wore expensive jewelry.

Still looked elegant.

Still believed she would win.

Then the judge entered.

“Case number 48217.”

Everyone stood.

The judge opened the evidence file.

Medical reports.

Photographs.

Hospital records.

Security footage.

Phone logs.

Everything.

Then…

One video appeared on the courtroom screen.

The body camera worn by one of Sebastian’s own security guards.

Apparently…

Someone had forgotten it automatically uploaded to the company’s cloud server.

The courtroom became silent.

The recording showed the dark parking garage.

It showed me standing there.

Terrified.

Then Sebastian’s voice.

Cold.

Emotionless.

“Don’t kill her.”

A pause.

“Just make sure she remembers this.”

The screen went black.

Nobody breathed.

Vanessa’s face drained of all color.

Sebastian closed his eyes.

He knew.

It was over.

The judge removed his glasses.

“Mr. Cole.”

No answer.

“Do you deny this recording?”

A long silence.

Finally…

“No.”

One word.

One confession.

Years of lies collapsed with it.

Outside the courthouse, reporters filled the steps.

Cameras flashed nonstop.

“Mrs. Reed!”

“Did your husband really order the attack?”

“Will you press criminal charges?”

I stopped walking.

For months…

Years…

I had always remained silent.

Today…

I didn’t.

“Yes.”

One word.

Clear.

Steady.

“And this time…”

I looked directly into every camera.

“…I won’t forgive him.”

Six months later…

The divorce was finalized.

Sebastian received a prison sentence for ordering aggravated assault, along with additional penalties related to witness intimidation and abuse of authority.

His corporate board voted unanimously to remove him as CEO.

Vanessa disappeared from every public event connected to the Cole Group.

Nobody knew where she went.

Nobody asked.

As for me…

Recovery was slow.

Some mornings my ribs still ached when it rained.

The scars above my eyebrow never completely faded.

But every afternoon at four o’clock…

A small pair of feet came running across the kindergarten playground.

“Mommy!”

Leo threw himself into my arms with all the strength his tiny body possessed.

I hugged him carefully.

Not because I loved him less.

Because I finally had something worth protecting.

One afternoon he looked up at me with innocent curiosity.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Why don’t we buy white roses anymore?”

I smiled.

Then pointed toward the flower shop beside the park.

Rows of bright yellow sunflowers swayed gently in the afternoon breeze.

“Because, sweetheart…”

I lifted him into my arms.

“…some flowers remind us of the past.”

“And some remind us that we’re finally free.”

Together, we walked toward the sunflowers.

Without looking back.
