Part 2: THE MAN WHO BUILT HIS EMPIRE ON BORROWED POWER

Victor never wasted words.

The line went dead.

I slipped the phone back into my purse as though I had simply finished an ordinary conversation.

Across from me, Chloe gave an exaggerated sigh.

“Finished?”

She snapped her fingers toward a nearby security guard.

“I think it’s time these two leave.”

The guard hesitated.

He looked at Sophia clutching her handmade necklace, then at me.

“Ma’am…”

Before he could finish, the lobby doors opened again.

Three men in dark suits entered without speaking.

They weren’t police.

They weren’t hotel security.

They moved with quiet precision, scanning the room before stopping a respectful distance behind me.

Chloe frowned.

“Who are they?”

I didn’t answer.

One of the men touched an earpiece.

“Mrs. Sterling, Mr. Victor Sterling will arrive in twelve minutes.”

Every trace of color disappeared from Chloe’s face.

“Sterling?”

She laughed nervously.

“You’re kidding.”

The man didn’t even look at her.

He simply nodded to me.

“The elevators have been secured.”

Guests nearby began whispering.

“Did he just say Sterling?”

“As in Sterling Capital?”

“No…”

“It can’t be.”

Chloe folded her arms tighter.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Even if you know someone named Sterling, Mr. Hayes is in the middle of an executive event.”

“You can’t interrupt.”

“I don’t intend to interrupt.”

I looked toward the elevator doors.

“I’m here to end it.”

Beside me, Sophia tugged gently at my sleeve.

“Mommy…”

Her eyes were shiny with tears.

“Did Daddy forget us?”

The question cut deeper than anything Chloe had said.

I knelt in front of her.

“No, sweetheart.”

I carefully brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face.

“Your father made some very bad choices.”

“But none of them are your fault.”

She nodded bravely.

“I still made his necklace.”

“I know.”

She looked down at the colorful paper loops she had spent hours gluing together.

“Can I still give it to him?”

For a moment, I couldn’t answer.

Then I smiled softly.

“That’s your decision.”

The elevator chimed.

Several executives stepped into the lobby, laughing over glasses of champagne.

They stopped when they noticed the strange silence.

One of them recognized me immediately.

His expression changed.

“Mrs…”

He caught himself.

Then quietly,

“Miss Sterling?”

Chloe spun toward him.

“You know her?”

The executive looked confused.

“Of course.”

“I met Miss Sterling years ago in New York.”

He glanced between Chloe and me.

“Why is she standing in the lobby?”

Before anyone answered, another elevator opened.

Dominic Hayes stepped out.

His arm was wrapped comfortably around an elegant blonde woman wearing a diamond engagement ring.

A little boy—about five years old—held his free hand.

They looked exactly like the perfect family.

Until Dominic saw me.

Everything about him froze.

“Vivienne?”

His voice barely came out.

Sophia’s face immediately brightened.

“Daddy!”

She started running toward him with the paper necklace held high.

“I made—”

The blonde woman instinctively stepped in front of Dominic.

“Who are these people?”

Sophia stopped in confusion.

She looked from the woman…

To the little boy…

Then back to her father.

“Daddy?”

Her tiny voice trembled.

“Who’s she?”

Dominic opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The little boy looked curiously at Sophia.

“Mom?”

He tugged the blonde woman’s hand.

“Who is that girl?”

The woman smiled confidently.

“Nobody you need to worry about.”

That single sentence echoed through the marble lobby.

I watched my daughter’s smile disappear.

Slowly…

Painfully…

She lowered the necklace into her hands.

Dominic finally stepped forward.

“Vivienne.”

“I can explain.”

I looked at him quietly.

“For six years?”

His shoulders stiffened.

“It’s complicated.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“It’s actually very simple.”

“You married me.”

“You had a daughter.”

“And somehow…”

I glanced toward the woman beside him.

“…you found time to build another family.”

The executives surrounding us had stopped pretending not to watch.

Several exchanged uncomfortable looks.

One elderly board member frowned.

“Dominic…”

“You told us your wife passed away years ago.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The blonde woman’s eyes widened.

“You said what?”

Dominic looked trapped.

“I…”

She stepped away from him.

“You told everyone I was your fiancée because your wife was dead?”

His face turned pale.

“Listen—”

“No.”

Now she was backing away too.

“You told me there wasn’t anyone else.”

She looked toward Sophia.

“Who is she?”

Sophia clung tightly to my leg.

“I’m his daughter.”

The words, spoken with heartbreaking innocence, shattered whatever illusion remained.

The blonde woman’s engagement ring suddenly seemed much heavier on her finger.

She slowly removed it.

“You lied to me.”

She placed it into Dominic’s shaking hand.

Then turned around, taking the little boy with her.

He kept looking back in confusion.

“Mom…”

“Why is everyone mad at Daddy?”

No one answered.

The lobby doors opened once more.

This time, every conversation stopped completely.

Victor Sterling walked inside.

Tailored charcoal suit.

Silver tie.

Expression unreadable.

Behind him came attorneys.

Corporate investigators.

Two retired federal judges whom I recognized immediately.

And finally…

The chairman of Hayes Global’s largest investment fund.

Dominic stared in disbelief.

“Mr… Mr. Callahan?”

The chairman didn’t even acknowledge him.

He walked directly toward Victor.

Then toward me.

“Miss Sterling.”

He inclined his head respectfully.

“I’m deeply sorry this reached you before it reached us.”

Dominic blinked.

“What is happening?”

Victor finally looked at him.

There was no anger.

Only disappointment.

“I warned you once.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

Victor’s voice remained calm.

“The day you married my sister.”

“I told you there was only one condition.”

“If you ever broke her heart…”

He accepted a thick folder from one of the attorneys.

“…everything you believed you owned would stop belonging to you.”

Victor handed the folder to Dominic.

Inside was a stack of termination notices, funding withdrawals, loan accelerations, and emergency board resolutions.

Dominic flipped through them desperately.

His breathing became uneven.

“No…”

“No, this can’t—”

His phone rang.

Then another.

And another.

One call after another flooded the screen.

Chief Financial Officer.

General Counsel.

Board Chairman.

Lead Investor.

He answered the first call on speaker without thinking.

The voice on the other end was frantic.

“Dominic…”

“The board has just voted.”

“They know everything.”

“You’ve been removed as CEO effective immediately.”

Before Dominic could respond, the call disconnected.

Victor glanced toward the elevators where hundreds of executives were now beginning to gather, watching in stunned silence.

Then he said quietly,

“And that’s only the first meeting scheduled for tonight.”
