I OPENED THE BANK RECORDS—AND MY MOTHER’S SECRET COLLAPSED

I helped Emma onto the sofa while dialing her obstetrician with shaking hands.

The doctor ordered us to come in immediately.

Before we left, I turned toward my mother.

She was still sitting on the wet floor, staring at me as though I had betrayed her.

“I only disciplined her because she’s lazy,” she snapped.

“You’ve been blinded by that woman.”

I didn’t answer.

I simply picked up two suitcases from the hallway closet.

Emma looked at me in confusion.

“Daniel… what are you doing?”

“We’re leaving.”

My mother’s face twisted with outrage.

“This is my son’s house!”

I stopped at the front door.

“No.”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“It’s ours.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You wouldn’t throw your own mother out over a pregnant wife.”

“I won’t.”

I calmly closed the suitcases.

“But after today, you’ll never live here again.”

Her expression froze.

She still believed she controlled everything.

She had no idea what I had discovered weeks earlier.

During the previous quarter, our company’s finance department had flagged several unusual transfers from my personal account.

At first, I assumed they were subscription renewals or automatic household payments.

I never imagined someone inside my own home was responsible.

After settling Emma safely in the hospital, I returned alone.

My mother was already on the phone with relatives.

She burst into fake tears the moment I walked in.

“Your wife turned you against me.”

I ignored her.

Instead, I opened my laptop and signed into our banking portal.

Then I connected the television in the living room.

Every transaction appeared on the screen.

Month after month.

Small withdrawals.

Then larger ones.

Furniture purchases.

Luxury handbags.

Jewelry.

Cash transfers.

Nearly one hundred and eighty thousand dollars had disappeared over seven months.

My mother’s voice suddenly became much quieter.

I clicked another tab.

Security footage from our home’s smart doorbell appeared.

Each transfer matched the delivery of expensive packages.

Packages Emma had never opened.

Because they had all been signed for by one person.

Margaret Brooks.

“I can explain,” she whispered.

“You should.”

I placed one final document on the coffee table.

It wasn’t a bank statement.

It was a notarized power of attorney she had secretly forged using my late father’s old records.

The attorney investigating the forgery had uncovered something even more disturbing.

The forged documents weren’t meant to steal my money.

They were meant to transfer ownership of our house before Emma gave birth.

And according to the investigator’s report…

My mother hadn’t planned it alone.
