THE MEDICAL FILE REVEALED THE SACRIFICE SHE HAD HIDDEN FROM ME

Sophie looked at me for several long seconds.

Then she forced a faint smile.

“I didn’t expect to see you here.”

My throat tightened.

“What happened to you?”

She lowered her eyes instead of answering.

The hospital bracelet trembled between her fingers.

“I signed the papers.”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“So… you don’t have to worry anymore.”

I frowned.

“What papers?”

Before she could answer, a nurse hurried toward us.

“There you are, Ms. Collins.”

The nurse stopped when she noticed me.

“Oh… are you family?”

Sophie immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“We’re divorced.”

The word hit me harder than I expected.

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry.”

“I thought…”

She stopped herself.

I looked at Sophie again.

“Please tell me what’s going on.”

For a long moment, she remained silent.

Finally, she handed me a thin medical folder resting beside her chair.

“I was going to mail it to you.”

My hands trembled as I opened it.

The first page contained the diagnosis.

Dilated cardiomyopathy.

Below it…

Advanced heart failure.

My vision blurred.

“You’ve known about this?”

She nodded.

“For almost a year.”

“A year?”

“I found out after the second miscarriage.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Tears gathered in her eyes.

“Because you were already carrying enough.”

“You blamed yourself for losing the babies.”

“I couldn’t let you spend every day waiting for me to die too.”

My knees felt weak.

Every late night at work.

Every ignored phone call.

Every moment I believed she was simply growing distant.

She had been fighting for her life.

Alone.

A cardiologist approached us carrying another chart.

He recognized my name immediately.

“You must be Mr. Collins.”

“I’ve wanted to meet you.”

Sophie quickly interrupted.

“It doesn’t matter anymore.”

The doctor looked confused.

“I thought she had already told you.”

“Told me what?”

He hesitated.

Then quietly placed another report into my hands.

It was a transplant evaluation.

Sophie had been placed on the national waiting list six months earlier.

Her condition had deteriorated rapidly.

Without a donor…

She likely had only months left.

I stared at her in disbelief.

She looked away.

“I didn’t want your pity.”

“It wasn’t pity.”

My voice broke.

“I loved you.”

She smiled sadly.

“I know.”

“That’s why I let you go.”

Before I could answer, the doctor opened the final section of her file.

“There is something else.”

He slid a laboratory report across the table.

“These tests were requested after her second miscarriage.”

I looked down.

Then froze.

The report clearly stated that neither miscarriage had been caused by Sophie.

The recurring pregnancy losses were linked to an undiagnosed genetic condition…

Mine.

I slowly lifted my head.

Sophie closed her eyes.

“I asked them never to tell you.”

“You already blamed yourself for everything.”

“I couldn’t let you carry one more burden.”

At that moment, I realized our marriage hadn’t ended because love disappeared.

It ended because the woman I loved had chosen to suffer alone… to protect me from a truth that would change my life forever.
