For several seconds, no one moved.
I looked from my mother-in-law to Chloe.
Then to Julian.
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
“So it’s true.”
My voice sounded strangely calm.
“You’ve all known.”
Julian stepped toward me.
“Clara, please let me explain.”
I laughed once.
It didn’t sound like me.
“You told me you were in Denver for a business conference.”
“I…”
“You were here playing house.”
Chloe lowered her head, tears spilling onto her cheeks.
“I never wanted it to happen like this.”
My mother-in-law scoffed.
“What difference does it make now?”
“Chloe is carrying the only grandchild this family will ever have.”
I slowly placed the cake box on the entry table.
“Only grandchild?”
She crossed her arms.
“You’ve been married six years.”
“No children.”
“The doctors already made that obvious.”
Julian whispered,
“Mom…”
But she continued.
“We need an heir.”
“You couldn’t give us one.”
I stared at all three of them.
Then I quietly reached into my handbag.
“I’ve been carrying something too.”
Julian frowned.
“What is it?”
A thick medical envelope landed on the table.
“My fertility report.”
No one spoke.
“I received it three days ago.”
Julian looked confused.
“I thought your doctor said…”
“He did.”
I interrupted him.
“But I asked for a second opinion.”
I pulled out another document.
Then another.
Every test reached the same conclusion.
“My reproductive health is completely normal.”
Silence filled the room.
My mother-in-law’s confident smile disappeared.
Julian opened the final page.
His hands began to shake.
At the bottom was another laboratory report.
Male infertility evaluation.
His name.
Julian Carter.
Diagnosis:
Complete azoospermia.
“No…”
He whispered.
“This can’t be right.”
The specialist’s signature covered three separate examinations performed over the previous four years.
The condition was permanent.
Untreatable.

Julian staggered backward.
“If I can’t…”
His eyes slowly turned toward Chloe.
Then toward her swollen belly.
The color drained from his face.
Chloe immediately burst into tears.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“I swear I wanted to.”
My mother-in-law looked equally horrified.
She grabbed the report from Julian.
“No.”
“My son is healthy.”
“The tests are fake.”
Before anyone could answer, the front door opened again.
A gray-haired fertility specialist walked inside with my attorney.
He calmly placed another sealed envelope on the coffee table.
“I was asked to personally deliver the original laboratory records.”
Julian tore the envelope open.
Inside was a DNA compatibility report that had been requested after Chloe became pregnant.
His breathing stopped.
The unborn baby was not biologically related to him.
As Julian stared at the page in disbelief, the doctor quietly spoke one final sentence.
“There’s one more person you need to identify.”
“The biological father attended every fertility appointment with Mrs. Chloe Carter.”
