THE BANK TRANSFER EXPOSED THE REAL REASON THEY WANTED MY APARTMENT

Wyatt sat quietly at the kitchen table, holding an ice pack against his swollen cheek.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“I shouldn’t have come.”

I knelt beside him.

“None of this is your fault.”

He lowered his head.

“They hate me because we’re poor.”

“No.”

I gently squeezed his shoulder.

“They hate anyone they think they can control.”

My attention returned to Javier’s forgotten laptop.

The message was still glowing on the screen.

My love, did she sign the mortgage yet?

My stomach tightened.

I clicked the conversation.

Hundreds of messages appeared.

Not business.

Not clients.

A woman named Vanessa.

For nearly eleven months.

I kept scrolling.

Then one message froze me.

Once the apartment is in your name, we’ll finally have enough collateral for the restaurant loan.

Javier replied only seconds later.

She still thinks I’m paying half the mortgage.

Don’t worry. She’ll sign after Mom pressures her enough.

My hands began to shake.

There had never been a mortgage.

I had purchased the apartment outright three years earlier.

Yet they had spent months trying to convince me to refinance it.

I opened our online banking records.

Javier had forgotten to log out.

One transfer immediately caught my eye.

$150,000.

Recipient:

Vanessa Collins.

Date:

Four months earlier.

The memo simply read:

Our future.

I stared at the screen in disbelief.

That money wasn’t his.

It had come directly from my business account.

The account I used to pay suppliers.

Employees.

Taxes.

I never authorized the transfer.

I downloaded every statement.

Every receipt.

Every message.

Then I opened another folder labeled Property Documents.

Inside was a scanned power of attorney.

My name appeared at the bottom.

So did my signature.

Except…

It wasn’t mine.

Someone had forged it.

The document authorized Javier to refinance my apartment without my presence.

Wyatt looked over my shoulder.

“Naomi…”

“That’s fake.”

“I know.”

Just then, my phone rang.

It was my accountant.

Before I could say a word, she sounded panicked.

“Naomi, I was trying to reach you all afternoon.”

“Someone submitted loan documents using your company as collateral.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“They claimed you personally guaranteed a commercial loan.”

“I never signed anything.”

“I know.”

“That’s why I rejected it.”

She paused.

“But the bank has already opened a fraud investigation.”

A loud knock interrupted the call.

Three detectives stood outside my apartment.

The lead investigator held up a badge.

“Ms. Naomi Carter?”

“Yes.”

“We’re investigating financial fraud involving forged property documents.”

He glanced at the laptop still open on my dining table.

Then at the bank transfer on the screen.

His expression changed immediately.

“I don’t believe you’re the suspect.”

He slowly closed the laptop.

“I believe you’re the victim.”

Then he looked directly at me and said the words that made everything even worse.

“Your husband and his mother aren’t the only people involved.”

“We’ve identified seven additional victims who lost their homes using the exact same scheme.”
