Hannah wiped away a tear before answering.
“I did.”
“You just never heard me.”
A firm knock interrupted us.
Three sharp knocks.
Hannah looked toward the front door.
“That’ll be Dr. Bennett.”
She carefully handed Sophie to me.
For the first time in my life…
I held my daughter.
She wrapped her tiny fingers around mine.
Every ounce of anger inside me disappeared.
The front door opened.
A woman in a winter coat entered carrying a thick medical folder.
“Mr. Mercer?”
I nodded.
“I’m Dr. Claire Bennett.”
“I delivered your daughter.”
She placed the folder on the dining table.
“I also reported a serious privacy breach this morning.”
I frowned.
“What breach?”
She removed several documents.
“Someone forged Hannah’s signature requesting complete access to Sophie’s prenatal and delivery records.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Dr. Bennett slid across the request form.
The requesting law office appeared at the top.
Mercer, Sloan & Pierce.
My mother’s law firm.
I stared at the page.
“No…”
Dr. Bennett continued.
“The signature was forged.”
“We confirmed it with handwriting specialists yesterday.”
Before I could speak, my phone rang.
It was Ethan Brooks.
My late father’s attorney.
“I’ve activated the emergency provision in your father’s trust.”
“What provision?”
“The one your father hoped we’d never need.”
Twenty minutes later Ethan arrived carrying a sealed blue file.
He placed it beside the medical records.
“Your father suspected someone inside the family would eventually isolate you from the people you loved.”
He opened the file.
Inside were printed emails.
Deleted voicemail transcripts.
Courier receipts.
Every message Hannah had ever tried to send me during her pregnancy.
None had reached me.
Each one had been intercepted by someone inside my company.
My longtime chief financial officer.
Daniel Cross.
The man who controlled every executive communication.
My hands shook.
“Why would Daniel do this?”
Ethan answered quietly.
“Because he wasn’t acting alone.”
He handed me another envelope.
It contained a letter signed by my mother.
“Keep her away from my son until the divorce is final.”
“Once the shares are secure, the baby changes nothing.”
Hannah covered her mouth.
She had never seen the letter.
Neither had I.
Ethan then unlocked the final compartment inside the blue file.
“There is one more document.”

It was dated fourteen years earlier.
Another young woman.
Another pregnancy.
Another relationship my family had forced me to abandon while I was building the company overseas.
Her name was Rachel Morgan.
My father had secretly investigated everything before he died.
He believed she had carried my child.
No one ever found her.
Until yesterday.
Security investigators located one final address in rural Vermont.
Registered to a fourteen-year-old boy.
Eli Morgan.
Ethan slowly placed the school enrollment record in front of me.
My breath caught.
The emergency contact line did not list Rachel.
It did not list another guardian.
It listed only one name.
Nathan Mercer.
My name.
A name I had never authorized.
A son I had never known existed.
And according to the attendance records…
Someone had checked Eli out of school just two hours earlier.
Using my mother’s driver’s license.
