PART 2 — THE WOMAN NEVER TOOK OFF

The call lasted less than ten seconds.

By the time I slipped my phone back into my pocket, every gate agent within three terminals had received the same instruction.

The aircraft door reopened.

Passengers looked around in confusion as two airport police officers stepped aboard.

Lily squeezed my hand.

“Are we in trouble?” she whispered.

“No,” I said gently.

“The person who left you is.”

Five minutes later, the woman in the beige coat stormed back into the terminal, furious.

“This is ridiculous!” she shouted. “I’m going to miss my flight!”

She spotted the twins sitting beside me.

Then she froze.

“And who are you?” she demanded.

I stood.

“Ryker Steel.”

The color drained from her face.

Apparently she knew exactly who I was.

She recovered quickly.

“They’re my husband’s children,” she snapped. “Their father died six months ago. I’m no longer responsible for them.”

Lily quietly lowered her head.

Owen hugged his stuffed bear tighter.

I looked at the woman.

“Then why did you tell the airline they were traveling with you?”

Her mouth opened.

No answer came.

One of the officers stepped forward.

“Ma’am, abandoning two minors inside an airport is a criminal offense.”

“They’re not abandoned!” she protested. “I left food in Lily’s backpack.”

Marco unzipped the tiny backpack.

Inside were half a bottle of water…

…three crackers…

…and an envelope.

Marco handed it to me.

Across the front, written in black marker, were six words.

FOR WHOEVER DECIDES TO KEEP THEM.

The terminal fell silent.

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate for each child.

Their father’s death certificate.

And a handwritten note.

“They’re good kids. I just don’t want them anymore.”

Lily buried her face against my arm.

For the first time since I’d met them…

…she started crying.

Not loudly.

Just small, exhausted sobs that sounded far too old for a five-year-old.

Something inside every person standing nearby seemed to crack with her.

Several travelers quietly wiped away tears.

Even one of the officers looked away.

The woman folded her arms.

“I don’t see what the big deal is. Someone will adopt them.”

I stared at her for a long moment.

“No,” I said.

“They already have someone.”

She laughed.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t even know them.”

“I know enough.”

I turned toward one of my attorneys, who had arrived moments earlier carrying a leather briefcase.

“Begin emergency guardianship proceedings,” I said.

He nodded immediately.

“Already started.”

The woman suddenly panicked.

“You can’t just take them!”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“You discarded them before your plane even left the ground.”

She took one desperate step forward.

“They belong to my late husband’s estate.”

My attorney stopped writing.

“Estate?”

The woman realized too late what she had said.

I watched the fear spread across her face.

“There isn’t any estate,” she stammered.

But it was too late.

Because Marco had already finished searching the documents.

He slowly pulled out one more folded paper hidden beneath the death certificate.

His expression changed instantly.

“Boss…”

“What is it?”

He handed me the document.

It was a copy of the twins’ father’s last will.

Across the final page, highlighted in yellow, was one sentence that changed everything.

Every asset, every company share, and every dollar would belong to Lily and Owen… the moment they reached eighteen years old.

Suddenly, abandoning the twins didn’t look like an act of cruelty.

It looked like the first step of a much larger plan.

And somewhere, someone had expected those two children to disappear forever.
