The world disappeared into darkness.
Then pain brought me back.
Not all at once.
In fragments.
Voices.
Running footsteps.
Metal instruments striking stainless steel.
Someone pressing hard against my chest.
“She’s back!”
“Pulse!”
“We have a pulse!”
I couldn’t open my eyes.
But I recognized the voice.
Dr. Samuel Brooks.
Chief of Trauma Surgery.
Not Cameron.
“Massive postpartum hemorrhage,” someone shouted.
“Blood pressure forty over twenty.”
“Activate the massive transfusion protocol.”
“She needs the OR now!”
Another voice.
Panicked.
“She already needed surgery.”
Silence.
Then Samuel spoke quietly.
“Who refused it?”
No one answered.
My body floated somewhere between consciousness and oblivion.
Someone squeezed my hand.
“Amelia.”
It was Cameron.
His voice trembled.
“Stay with me.”
I wanted to pull my hand away.
I couldn’t move.
“She can hear you,” Samuel said.
“Move aside.”
“She needs room.”
I felt the bed begin moving.
Bright ceiling lights passed overhead one after another.
Operating room.
I knew exactly where they were taking me.
Then everything disappeared again.
…
When I opened my eyes the second time, sunlight spilled through a hospital window.
The room was quiet.
My throat burned.
Machines beeped steadily beside me.
I turned my head.
The first thing I saw wasn’t Cameron.
It was Elena Ruiz.
The nurse who had tried to save me.
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Dr. Grant.”
I tried to speak.
Only air escaped.
She gently held a cup of water to my lips.
“You’re safe.”
“My…”
My voice cracked.
“My son?”
A smile spread across her exhausted face.
“He’s alive.”
“Healthy.”
“Ten pounds, two ounces.”
I closed my eyes.
Thank God.
Tears slipped silently down my cheeks.
“And you.”
Elena squeezed my hand.
“You almost died.”
Memory returned instantly.
The delivery room.
The monitors.
The bleeding.
“Cameron?”
Her smile disappeared.
“He’s outside.”
“I don’t want to see him.”
She nodded.
“I understand.”
Before she could leave, I touched her wrist.
“What happened?”
She hesitated.
Then quietly answered.
“After your heart stopped…”
“Dr. Brooks took over.”
“He ordered emergency surgery immediately.”
I already knew what that meant.
“He found a uterine rupture.”
She nodded.
“And nearly four liters of blood in your abdomen.”
I closed my eyes.
Exactly what I had feared.
“You were right.”
The words sounded almost painful for her to say.
“He should’ve operated hours earlier.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Elena whispered,
“There were witnesses.”
I looked at her.
“All of us heard you request a C-section.”
“All of us heard him refuse.”
My fingers slowly tightened around the blanket.
“What about Sophie?”
Elena looked toward the closed door.
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“The moment Dr. Brooks entered.”
I almost laughed.
Almost.
A soft knock interrupted us.
Dr. Samuel Brooks stepped inside.
He looked exhausted.
But relieved.
“How are you feeling?”
“Alive.”
He smiled sadly.
“Barely.”
He pulled up a chair.
“I won’t lie to you.”
“You lost your pulse for three minutes.”
“We transfused twelve units of blood.”
“You underwent emergency surgery lasting almost five hours.”
I listened quietly.
Then asked the question that mattered.
“Will I recover?”
“Yes.”
“And future pregnancies?”
He remained silent for several seconds.
Finally…

“We had to perform a hysterectomy.”
The room became very still.
No more children.
Ever.
I nodded once.
No tears came.
Because my son was alive.
That was enough.
Samuel looked at me carefully.
“There is something else.”
“What?”
He handed me a thin folder.
Inside were photocopies.
Operating notes.
Nursing statements.
Medication records.
The first page contained a handwritten sentence.
Patient repeatedly requested emergency Cesarean section. Request denied by attending physician.
The second page.
Fetal distress documented at 15:47. No surgical intervention initiated.
The third.
Attending physician ordered reduction of epidural despite worsening maternal condition.
Every page carried signatures.
Nurses.
Residents.
Anesthesiologists.
People who had finally written the truth.
Samuel folded his hands.
“The hospital has already suspended Dr. Cameron Hayes from all surgical duties.”
My breathing stopped.
“What?”
“He no longer has admitting privileges.”
“And the Medical Board has been notified.”
A knock sounded again.
This time…
It was Cameron.
He stood outside the glass door.
Still wearing yesterday’s bloodstained surgical scrubs.
His eyes were swollen.
His hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
He looked nothing like the confident obstetrician who had ordered nurses to hold me down.
He looked broken.
He quietly asked,
“Can I see my wife?”
Before anyone answered…
Another voice echoed from the hallway.
Cold.
Professional.
“Dr. Cameron Hayes?”
Two investigators from the State Medical Board approached him.
One held a leather portfolio.
The other carried a sealed evidence box.
“We need to speak with you regarding yesterday’s delivery.”
Cameron slowly turned.
One investigator removed a document.
“Effective immediately…”
“…your medical license is placed under emergency suspension pending investigation.”
The hallway fell silent.
Then the investigator spoke one final sentence.
“We’ve also received sworn statements from seven members of your delivery team.”
Cameron’s face drained of every trace of color.
Because he suddenly realized…
The people he thought would stay silent…
Had finally decided to tell the truth.
