Part 2: THE TEST HE NEVER SAW COMING

Ethan’s question remained suspended between us.

Our son, Noah, rested comfortably in his arms, happily tugging at the collar of Ethan’s shirt as though the answer could never change the way he already felt.

I looked at the little boy first.

Only then did I meet Ethan’s eyes.

“What if he is?” I asked quietly.

His jaw tightened.

“And what if he isn’t?”

“I asked first.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I walked toward the bookshelf, opened a drawer, and removed a small waterproof envelope.

“I’ve kept this for almost two years.”

Ethan accepted it without taking his eyes off me.

Inside was a faded pregnancy test.

Beneath it lay an ultrasound.

Date.

Six months before our unexpected wedding.

His fingers trembled.

“No…”

He unfolded the next paper.

A medical report.

Estimated conception date.

Exactly the night before he left the country.

“I tried calling you,” I said.

“I changed my number.”

“I know.”

“My assistant never told me.”

“I know.”

He slowly lowered himself onto the sofa.

“You… knew where I was?”

“I knew you had gone overseas.”

“I also heard you were engaged.”

His head lifted immediately.

“What?”

“That was what your assistant told me.”

“I was never engaged.”

Silence settled over the room.

Two years of misunderstandings suddenly seemed unbearably small.

“I thought…” Ethan whispered.

“…you left me because another man had more money.”

I smiled bitterly.

“And I thought you abandoned me after finding someone else.”

Neither story had been true.

He looked again at Noah.

Then at the ultrasound.

Then back at me.

“The day outside the civil registry…”

“You lied.”

“So did you.”

“I wasn’t divorced.”

“I wasn’t sterile.”

That finally broke something between us.

For the first time in years…

Ethan laughed.

A tired, helpless laugh filled with regret.

“I married the mother of my own child without realizing it.”

“You did.”

“I spent an entire year thanking myself for being generous enough to raise another man’s son.”

“You certainly mentioned it often.”

He covered his face with one hand.

“I deserve that.”

A knock interrupted us.

His attorney stepped inside carrying several folders.

“Mr. Hale, the divorce agreement you requested last month is ready for your signature.”

The room became perfectly still.

The attorney glanced from Ethan…

…to Noah…

…to me.

Clearly sensing terrible timing.

“I can come back later.”

“No,” Ethan said.

“Stay.”

He accepted the folder.

Opened it.

Looked at the first page.

Then calmly tore the entire agreement into pieces.

Every page.

Every signature line.

Every legal notice.

The attorney stared in disbelief.

“Mr. Hale…”

“I’ll need something else.”

“What?”

“A postnuptial agreement.”

The attorney blinked.

“Including everything I own.”

“My companies.”

“My shares.”

“My apartments.”

“My investments.”

“If anything ever happens to me…”

He looked toward Noah.

“…it belongs to my wife and my son.”

I froze.

“Ethan…”

He interrupted gently.

“I already lost both of you once.”

“I’m not risking it again.”

Just then his phone rang.

The screen displayed a familiar name.

Rachel Morgan.

The woman everyone—including Olivia—had believed was his former fiancée.

Ethan answered on speaker.

“Congratulations,” Rachel laughed.

“My husband and I finally adopted our daughter.”

Olivia’s eyes widened.

“Husband?”

Rachel laughed louder.

“I’ve been married for four years.”

“I thought you already knew.”

Ethan slowly turned toward Olivia.

“So…”

“There never was another woman.”

She swallowed.

“And there never was another man.”

Neither of them realized that someone had deliberately separated them years earlier.

But within days…

They would discover exactly who had rewritten their lives.

And that betrayal had begun long before the morning they accidentally remarried.
