PART 2: THE GAME CHANGES

I didn’t open the bedroom door.

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t run downstairs and demand an explanation.

I simply stood in the hallway, listening until the blood roaring in my ears became quieter than the voices behind that door.

“Adrian knows about it?” one man asked.

A pause.

Then another voice answered.

“Of course. Vanessa said Claire needs to understand from the beginning who makes the decisions in this marriage.”

Something inside me went completely cold.

Not broken.

Cold.

I took out my phone and started recording.

The conversation continued.

Apparently, the camera had been installed that afternoon inside a decorative smoke detector facing the bed. Vanessa had arranged it through one of Adrian’s friends, Nolan, who owned a small security company.

They planned to keep whatever was recorded.

Not necessarily to release it.

Just to make sure I understood that leaving Adrian would have consequences.

Then one of them laughed.

“After tonight she’ll never dare divorce him.”

That sentence erased the last piece of doubt in me.

I quietly stepped away.

Five minutes earlier, I had been wondering whether my marriage could survive the humiliation downstairs.

Now I was wondering how many people would leave my wedding in handcuffs.

I went into the bathroom at the end of the hallway and locked the door.

Then I called my older brother.

Daniel answered on the second ring.

“Claire? Everything okay?”

“No.”

My voice sounded strangely calm.

“Come upstairs. Alone. And don’t tell Mom.”

He heard something in my tone and stopped asking questions.

Two minutes later, he knocked three times.

When I showed him the recording, his expression changed.

Daniel had always disliked Adrian.

But dislike was nothing compared with the look in his eyes now.

He listened twice.

Then he whispered:

“Where’s the camera?”

“Bridal suite.”

He immediately reached for the door.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“Claire—”

“If you confront him now, they’ll destroy everything.”

Daniel stared at me.

That was when I understood what I wanted.

Not revenge through screaming.

Not a ruined cake.

Not Vanessa’s hair pulled in front of two hundred guests.

I wanted them to explain everything themselves.

So I called the wedding venue manager.

I told her there might be an unauthorized recording device inside one of their rooms.

Her face went pale.

Within ten minutes, she brought the head of security.

They entered the bridal suite while I remained outside.

The smoke detector wasn’t a smoke detector.

The security manager removed a tiny device and looked at me grimly.

“It’s transmitting wirelessly.”

“Can you tell where?”

“Possibly.”

He disappeared with his equipment.

Daniel looked at me.

“What are you planning?”

I stared downstairs through the balcony railing.

Adrian was drinking champagne with Vanessa.

She had one hand resting comfortably on his shoulder.

My husband looked happier beside her at our wedding than he had looked beside me during our vows.

I smiled.

“We’re going to finish their game.”

I returned downstairs.

The moment Adrian saw me, relief crossed his face.

“There you are.”

He wrapped an arm around my waist.

I nearly recoiled.

Instead, I smiled.

“Sorry. I needed a minute.”

Vanessa lifted her champagne glass.

“See? I told you she wouldn’t stay angry.”

Around us, several friends laughed.

I looked directly at her.

“You were right.”

Her smile grew wider.

So I picked up the microphone.

“Everyone!”

The room gradually quieted.

“I’m sorry for disappearing. Apparently, I took the first game a little too seriously.”

Adrian chuckled.

“There’s my wife.”

Several guests applauded.

I continued.

“Since Adrian and Vanessa reminded me that marriage requires a sense of humor, I thought we should play one final game.”

Vanessa tilted her head.

“What game?”

I smiled.

“Truth or dare.”

The room exploded with enthusiasm.

Adrian groaned dramatically.

“You’re going to regret this.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I really don’t think I will.”

We arranged chairs in the middle of the ballroom.

Vanessa volunteered first.

Of course she did.

“Truth,” she announced.

I approached her with the microphone.

“When was the last time you kissed the groom before tonight?”

Silence.

Her smile twitched.

Adrian laughed loudly.

“Claire.”

“What?” I asked innocently. “It’s only a game.”

Some guests started exchanging glances.

Vanessa crossed her legs.

“We were teenagers.”

“Really?”

“Obviously.”

I nodded.

“Then why did Adrian text you three days ago saying, ‘After the wedding, nothing between us has to change’?”

Adrian’s face drained of color.

Vanessa froze.

I watched the realization spread across the room.

His mother slowly lowered her glass.

“Claire,” Adrian said sharply. “Give me the microphone.”

I stepped away.

“No.”

Then Daniel entered the ballroom.

Beside him were the venue manager and two security officers.

One carried a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the camera.

Adrian stopped moving.

Vanessa stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

“What is that?”

I looked at her.

“You tell me.”

Her confidence vanished.

Adrian grabbed my arm.

“Claire, we need to speak privately.”

I pulled free.

“Private?”

I almost laughed.

“That’s an interesting word coming from you.”

The venue manager took the microphone.

“This recording device was discovered inside the bridal suite. It was installed without authorization from the venue.”

Gasps filled the ballroom.

Someone whispered, “Oh my God.”

Adrian turned toward Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

I stared at him.

There it was.

The performance.

The same performance he had probably used a hundred times before.

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

“You’re blaming me?”

“Was this your idea?”

Her face changed.

“You knew!”

Adrian’s mother stood.

“Adrian?”

He ignored her.

“Vanessa, stop talking.”

But Vanessa had finally understood.

If someone had to be sacrificed, Adrian had already chosen her.

And Vanessa Blake did not look like a woman accustomed to being sacrificed.

She laughed once.

Bitterly.

Then she took the microphone from the table.

“You want the truth?”

Adrian stepped toward her.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

She backed away.

“You told me she was too independent. You said once you married her, her family connections and company shares would become useful, but you needed something to stop her from leaving whenever she got angry.”

My stomach turned.

The guests became completely silent.

Vanessa continued.

“You told me to arrange the camera.”

Adrian lunged for the microphone.

Daniel blocked him.

Vanessa shouted:

“And you told me to kiss you tonight!”

That did it.

Adrian’s father closed his eyes.

My mother covered her mouth.

Vanessa was crying now, mascara streaking beneath her eyes.

“You said humiliating her publicly would teach her not to challenge you. You said if she tolerated it tonight, she would tolerate anything later.”

Adrian looked around desperately.

“She’s lying!”

Unfortunately for him, the security manager returned at that exact moment.

“We traced the receiver.”

He placed a small black device on the table.

“It was connected to a laptop inside Mr. Adrian Cole’s study upstairs.”

My husband stopped breathing.

The room erupted.

But I barely heard it.

I looked at the man I had nearly promised my entire life to.

All those forgotten preferences.

All the times Vanessa came first.

All the jokes I had been told not to overthink.

They had never been small things.

They were rehearsals.

Tests.

Adrian reached for me.

“Claire, please. Listen to me.”

I removed my wedding ring.

His eyes dropped to it.

“Don’t.”

I placed it carefully into his champagne glass.

The ring disappeared beneath the bubbles.

“You were right about one thing,” I said.

His lips trembled.

“What?”

“Tonight taught me exactly what marriage to you would look like.”

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Two police officers entered with the venue’s security director.

Vanessa stared at them.

Adrian’s face turned gray.

I picked up my handbag.

Behind me, Adrian shouted my name.

I stopped only once.

Not to look at him.

To address the guests.

“The wedding is over. Please enjoy the cake.”

Then I walked out.

Three months later, the marriage was legally annulled.

The evidence from the camera, the recorded conversation, Vanessa’s statements and the messages recovered from Adrian’s devices turned what he had dismissed as a “wedding prank” into a criminal investigation.

Nolan lost his security license.

Vanessa accepted a deal and testified.

Adrian’s family tried twice to contact mine.

I answered neither time.

As for Adrian, he sent letters.

Apologies.

Flowers.

Pages explaining that he had loved me but had been “afraid of losing control.”

I returned every package unopened.

Six months after the wedding, I was standing in my new apartment when Daniel visited carrying a small white box.

“What’s that?”

He placed it on my kitchen counter.

“The wedding photographer found something while organizing the pictures.”

Inside was a photograph.

It had been taken seconds after Adrian kissed Vanessa.

Everyone in the background was laughing.

Vanessa looked victorious.

Adrian looked amused.

And I stood several feet away, staring at them.

At first, I hated the photograph.

Then Daniel pointed at my face.

“Look closer.”

I did.

I wasn’t crying.

I wasn’t begging.

I wasn’t even shocked anymore.

I looked calm.

Almost frighteningly calm.

Because somewhere between that kiss and the moment I heard about the camera, the woman who had spent years trying to earn Adrian’s love had disappeared.

I framed the photograph.

Not because I wanted to remember him.

Because I wanted to remember myself.

The night Adrian tried to teach me my place in his marriage…

was the night I showed him exactly how quickly I could leave it.
