PART 2: THE FUTURE HE NEVER SAW COMING

Michael arrived twenty minutes later with his laptop under one arm and the expression he usually reserved for people he intended to destroy in court.

He didn’t hug me immediately.

He looked at the monitors.

At my belly.

At the ring sitting on the table.

Then he quietly asked,

“Where is Ethan?”

“With his wife.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

I turned the laptop toward him.

“And apparently, I’m worth two million dollars dead.”

For the first time, my brother lost his composure.

“What?”

I showed him the insurance policy.

Michael read every line twice.

Then his face changed.

“Claire, did you sign this?”

“No.”

He enlarged the digital signature.

It looked like mine.

Almost.

But Ethan had made one mistake.

I had changed my legal signature three years earlier after taking control of Morgan Development.

The signature on that policy was the old one.

Michael immediately began saving copies.

“Don’t contact him,” he said.

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good. Because this isn’t just about cheating anymore.”

My phone vibrated.

Ethan.

I let it ring.

A minute later, another message appeared.

“Vanessa is stable. The baby is coming. Stay where you are. I’ll deal with you afterward.”

Deal with me.

As though I were the problem he needed to clean up.

Michael stared at the message and gave a cold laugh.

“He still thinks he’s in control.”

I looked at him.

“Then let’s not correct him yet.”

For the next hour, we worked.

The transfers were worse than I had imagined.

Ethan had not simply paid Vanessa’s rent.

He had used a company expense account to cover furniture, medical bills, a private maternity package, jewelry, and deposits on a house outside the city.

A house I knew.

Three months earlier, Ethan had taken me there and told me Morgan Development was considering buying it as an investment property.

He had stood beside me in the kitchen, smiling while I discussed renovations.

He had been planning to move his mistress into it.

With my money.

I felt something inside me go strangely calm.

Not numb.

Clear.

“Freeze everything he can access,” I said.

Michael looked at me carefully.

“Claire—”

“Do it.”

Because the company belonged to me.

My grandfather had founded it.

My father had expanded it.

And when my father died, Ethan had received a senior position because I trusted him.

Not because he owned anything.

Within thirty minutes, the company cards connected to Ethan were suspended.

His authorization on two business accounts was revoked pending investigation.

Michael contacted our financial controller and instructed her to preserve every transaction Ethan had approved during the previous year.

Then we contacted the insurance company’s fraud department.

That was when we found the second surprise.

The policy application included a medical disclosure about my high-risk pregnancy.

Information Ethan should never have possessed in that level of detail.

Michael stared at the screen.

“How did he get this?”

I already knew.

“My medical folder.”

Two weeks earlier, I had found it moved from the drawer beside my bed.

Ethan said the cleaner must have touched it.

I had believed him.

Again.

Every small lie suddenly connected to another.

A nurse entered and checked the monitor.

“The contractions are slowing,” she said. “That’s good. But Dr. Bennett wants you here overnight.”

I nodded.

After she left, Michael closed the laptop.

“You need rest.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“My husband is three floors below me celebrating the birth of another woman’s child while someone used my medical information to insure my life.”

I looked directly at him.

“I’ll rest when I know what he was planning.”

We didn’t have to wait long.

At 8:17 p.m., Ethan finally came.

He opened my hospital-room door without knocking.

His shirt was wrinkled.

There was dried blood on one cuff from carrying Vanessa inside earlier, but I forced myself not to look at it.

His face showed exhaustion.

Then irritation.

Not shame.

Not remorse.

I think that hurt more than anything else.

“Claire.”

Michael stood.

Ethan stopped.

“What is he doing here?”

“My brother came because my husband was busy.”

“Don’t start.”

I almost laughed.

He stepped closer.

“Vanessa had an emergency. I panicked. I said what I had to say so they would treat her quickly.”

“You said she was your wife.”

“It meant nothing.”

“And her baby?”

His eyes flickered.

I had seen it.

Fear.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

I continued.

“The apartment?”

Silence.

“The private doctor?”

His face hardened.

“The house on Willow Creek Road?”

Now he looked at Michael.

“What did you do?”

Michael smiled without warmth.

“Interesting question.”

Ethan pulled out his phone.

Then frowned.

He tapped the screen again.

“What the hell?”

His company card had been declined.

Then he opened his banking app.

His expression changed.

“What did you do, Claire?”

That was the first moment he understood the woman he had abandoned in the waiting room was no longer waiting for him.

“I protected my company.”

“Our company.”

“No.”

I held his gaze.

“My company.”

His voice dropped.

“You can’t lock me out.”

“I already did.”

He stepped toward me.

Michael immediately moved between us.

Ethan stopped.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

“Why did you insure my life?”

All the anger disappeared from Ethan’s face.

His skin went pale.

“What?”

“Two million dollars.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Beneficiary: Ethan Morgan.”

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“The signature is forged.”

“Claire, listen—”

“My medical records were attached.”

“I can explain.”

“Then explain.”

He looked at Michael.

“No lawyers.”

Michael almost smiled.

“I’m her brother first.”

Ethan’s eyes returned to me.

And suddenly his expression softened.

It was the face he had used during our first years together.

The one that had once made me trust him completely.

“Claire, I made mistakes.”

“Mistakes?”

“Vanessa wasn’t supposed to become serious.”

I felt my child move beneath my hand.

Ethan continued quickly.

“She became pregnant. Everything got complicated.”

“So you built another life with my money?”

“I was going to replace it.”

“With what?”

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Mrs. Morgan?”

“Yes.”

“This is Daniel Reeves from the insurance company’s fraud investigation unit. We’ve completed an initial review of the policy application.”

Ethan froze.

The investigator continued.

“There is something you need to know immediately.”

I put the call on speaker.

“The policy was submitted through a financial services company called VBL Holdings.”

Michael looked at me.

Neither of us recognized the name.

But Ethan did.

His face told us before the investigator finished speaking.

“VBL Holdings,” the man continued, “is registered to a Vanessa Blake.”

The room became completely silent.

I slowly looked at Ethan.

His lover hadn’t merely benefited from the policy.

She had helped create it.

Ethan shook his head.

“No. That’s impossible.”

For the first time that day, he sounded genuinely afraid.

Then Michael’s laptop chimed.

A recovered company email had just appeared.

An email Ethan had deleted three weeks earlier.

Michael opened it.

The sender was Vanessa.

The subject line contained only four words:

AFTER CLAIRE HAS THE BABY

Ethan lunged toward the computer.

Michael slammed the lid shut.

And from the doorway came a weak female voice.

“Ethan?”

We all turned.

Vanessa stood there in a hospital gown, one hand gripping the doorframe.

Her face was pale.

But her eyes were perfectly clear.

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

And smiled.

“You weren’t supposed to find that email yet.”
