PART 2: THE TRAP MY FATHER LEFT BEHIND

The message appeared on my screen at 11:17 that night.

Unknown number.

It contained only a photograph.

In it, Adrián was sitting at a dark wooden table beside Vanessa and a man in a gray suit.

On the table, I immediately recognized the blue folders I had seen hidden at the back of our closet for four years.

Under the image was a single sentence:

“If you want to keep what remains of your company, do not let Samuel Chen reach Monterrey tomorrow.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Emma took the phone from my hand.

“Who sent you this?”

“I don’t know.”

She enlarged the photograph.

Then she pointed at the man in the gray suit.

“I know who he is.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

“Federico Lozano. A notary public. Three years ago, he was investigated for irregular document certifications.”

The same man who had probably validated my forged signature.

Emma zoomed in on another part of the image.

Behind Adrián was a digital clock.

10:42 p.m.

The photograph had been taken less than forty minutes earlier.

“They’re meeting tonight,” I murmured.

Emma nodded.

“And if someone is warning you, it means someone inside Adrián’s group doesn’t trust the plan.”

I looked at the folders again.

Blue.

Four years.

I had seen them so many times.

Adrián always waited until he thought I was asleep before taking them out.

I never asked.

I never opened them.

He had interpreted my silence as stupidity.

But there was something I had never told him.

Two years earlier, I had secretly photographed the codes written on the spines of those folders.

Emma stared at me.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me that?”

“Because I still trusted him.”

“Valentina…”

“I said I trusted him. I didn’t say I was stupid.”

I opened an encrypted folder in my private cloud storage.

The photographs were still there.

A-17.

B-24.

C-09.

D-31.

Emma entered the codes into her computer.

It took her less than five minutes to find the first match.

A-17 corresponded to a real estate project my firm had canceled three years earlier.

B-24 was a commercial parcel Adrián had insisted we sell.

C-09 belonged to an auxiliary trust.

But D-31…

Emma stopped typing.

“This can’t be right.”

I leaned closer.

“What did you find?”

On the screen was a company registered in Delaware.

VTR Holdings LLC.

Created four years earlier.

The same year the blue folders first appeared.

“Who owns it?” I asked.

Emma searched the available records.

The answer appeared seconds later.

Adrián González owned forty percent.

Vanessa Torres owned forty percent.

The remaining twenty percent was held through an anonymous trust entity.

A cold pressure settled in my chest.

“Vanessa has been involved for four years.”

“At least.”

Then I understood something even worse.

Their relationship hadn’t begun recently.

Whatever existed between them had probably started long before Adrián stopped pretending to love me.

Emma continued digging.

VTR Holdings had purchased land surrounding several projects developed by my firm.

Always months before our projects were publicly announced.

Inside information.

My feasibility studies.

My forecasts.

My clients.

Adrián had been using my company as a compass to enrich himself in secret.

“Valentina,” Emma said slowly, “this isn’t just forgery anymore.”

I knew.

Corporate fraud.

Possible misuse of confidential information.

Money laundering, depending on where the funds had come from.

And perhaps something else.

My phone vibrated again.

The same unknown number.

“Find out who financed VTR Holdings.”

Emma and I looked at each other.

She started working immediately.

It took twenty minutes.

When the name of the first financier appeared, I froze.

It wasn’t a bank.

It wasn’t Adrián.

It was a company called Chen Pacific Development.

Samuel Chen.

The man my father had appointed as guardian of the family fortune.

“What the hell does this mean?” I whispered.

Emma didn’t have an answer either.

Suddenly, my father’s document no longer looked like a simple protection mechanism.

Samuel was financially connected to the same company Adrián and Vanessa had been using.

“Did your father know about this?” Emma asked.

“I don’t know.”

For the first time that night, I felt truly uncertain.

Maybe my father hadn’t built a trap for Adrián.

Maybe he had built one for all of us.

At 12:06 a.m., we called the bank that administered the trust.

After verifying my identity, I asked to speak with the overnight asset-security officer.

His answer chilled me.

“Mrs. Rodríguez, Mr. Chen has already requested transportation to Monterrey.”

“When?”

“This afternoon.”

“What time does he arrive?”

There was a pause.

“His private flight is scheduled to land at approximately 6:40 a.m.”

Six hours.

I asked another question.

“Can Adrián González contact the trust directly?”

“He shouldn’t be able to.”

“What does ‘shouldn’t’ mean?”

Another pause.

“We recorded three attempted accesses this week using credentials associated with his office.”

Emma and I exchanged a look.

Adrián hadn’t been preparing this for days.

He had been preparing it for years.

At two in the morning, I returned to my apartment.

Not to confront him.

To retrieve one thing.

The building was silent.

I used an emergency key Adrián had forgotten existed.

When I entered, I heard voices coming from the study.

Vanessa.

“When Chen signs, she won’t have any way out.”

Adrián answered:

“I don’t need him to sign.”

I stopped moving.

“Then why is he coming?” Vanessa asked.

Adrián gave a quiet laugh.

“To discover that Eduardo Rodríguez lied to him for twenty years.”

My heart stopped.

My father.

Vanessa asked:

“Does Valentina know who Samuel really is?”

Silence.

Then Adrián replied:

“She has no idea.”

I slowly stepped backward.

At that moment, I understood that the properties, the signatures, and the company might only be the surface of what was happening.

I opened the recording app on my phone.

Then I heard Adrián say the sentence that changed everything.

“Once Samuel sees the DNA test, Valentina will no longer have the right to claim the trust.”

My legs nearly gave out.

DNA test?

I pressed myself against the wall.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“What if Eduardo falsified that too?”

Adrián answered:

“That’s why I’ve kept the originals in the blue folders for four years.”

I held my breath.

The originals.

The folders.

Everything was connected.

I moved toward the closet.

Empty.

The compartment where Adrián had hidden the folders for four years was open.

Nothing remained inside.

Then a light switched on behind me.

“I knew you’d come back.”

I turned around.

Adrián stood in the doorway.

No Vanessa.

No surprise.

Only a blue folder in his hands.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was an old photograph of my father standing beside a much younger man.

I recognized the face immediately.

Samuel Chen.

Beneath the photograph was a genetic report dated thirty-seven years earlier.

One year before I was born.

Adrián smiled.

“Your father didn’t create that trust to protect you from me, Valentina.”

He stepped closer and held the document in front of my eyes.

“He created it to stop you from discovering who you really are.”

I read the first line.

Then the second.

And when I saw the surname written beside the word “paternity,” I felt my entire world tilt beneath my feet.

Because the name written there…

was not Eduardo Rodríguez.
