PART 2: THE ACCOUNT MY HUSBAND WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND

That night, I barely slept.

Daniel lay beside me breathing evenly, one arm resting across the empty space between us.

For three years, that sound had made me feel safe.

Now every breath made me wonder what he was thinking.

At 2:17 in the morning, he moved.

I closed my eyes immediately.

The mattress shifted.

Then I heard the faint click of the bedroom door.

I waited ten seconds before opening my eyes.

Daniel was gone.

A thin line of light came from the living room.

I slipped out of bed and walked barefoot toward the hallway.

He was standing beside my handbag.

My phone was in his hand.

My heart stopped.

“Daniel?”

He turned so quickly that he almost dropped it.

“What are you doing awake?”

“What are you doing with my phone?”

His expression changed for only a fraction of a second.

Then he smiled.

“I couldn’t find mine. I was going to call it.”

His phone was charging on the kitchen counter.

We both knew it.

I looked at him.

Daniel followed my gaze.

For the first time since I had known him, his lie felt embarrassingly obvious.

“I’m tired,” he said. “I forgot.”

He handed me the phone.

“Go back to sleep.”

I took it.

The screen was unlocked.

My banking application was open.

Neither of us spoke.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“Why were you checking that?”

“I wasn’t.”

“It opened by itself?”

“I must have tapped it.”

“You needed my password.”

His face hardened.

“Why are you interrogating me?”

There it was.

Not embarrassment.

Not apology.

Anger.

I suddenly remembered my father’s handwriting.

The closer you are, the more you should observe.

I lowered my voice.

“I’m not interrogating you.”

“Good.”

Daniel walked past me.

Then he stopped.

“Your father left money, didn’t he?”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What makes you think that?”

“He was careful his entire life.”

“So?”

“So don’t treat me like an idiot.”

I stared at his back.

This was no longer the husband who had washed dishes after dinner.

This was someone impatient because a door had not opened when he expected it to.

“I told you I haven’t finished sorting through everything.”

Daniel turned around.

“You’ve had months.”

“I was grieving.”

“And I was there for you.”

The sentence landed badly.

As if his kindness had been an investment.

He seemed to realize it too.

His expression softened immediately.

“That came out wrong.”

I said nothing.

Daniel approached and touched my shoulder.

“I just don’t want you making financial decisions alone.”

“I won’t.”

He smiled.

Then he kissed my forehead.

But before returning to bed, he asked:

“Did your father ever mention another bank?”

I felt ice spread through my chest.

“No.”

He studied me.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

The next morning, I called in sick.

Daniel had already gone to work.

I waited thirty minutes.

Then I went straight to my father’s apartment.

For the first time, I locked the door behind me twice.

The savings book was still beneath the old coat.

1,200,000 yuan.

Untouched.

But something had changed.

The leather notebook was missing.

I searched the drawer.

The desk.

The wardrobe.

Nothing.

I knew exactly where I had left it.

Inside the coat pocket, beside the copper key.

The key remained.

The notebook did not.

I sat on the edge of my father’s bed.

Daniel had found it.

Or someone else had.

My hands began trembling.

Then I remembered something strange.

The copper key.

Why had my father specifically mentioned it?

The savings book and the key to the old house are for you.

But I was already inside the old house.

The apartment door had its own modern steel key.

The copper one did not fit it.

So what exactly did it open?

I started searching.

Cabinets.

Drawers.

The old trunk beneath the bed.

Nothing.

Then I noticed an object I had seen since childhood without ever questioning it.

A narrow wooden cabinet beside my father’s bookcase.

It had always contained old history textbooks.

I pulled them out.

At the back was a small metal keyhole.

My pulse accelerated.

The copper key fit.

Click.

The rear panel released.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

And inside that compartment were three things.

A sealed envelope.

A USB drive.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph first.

Daniel.

Much younger.

Maybe twenty-one.

Standing outside my university library.

I was in the background.

But he wasn’t looking at the camera.

He was looking at me.

The photograph had been taken almost six months before Daniel claimed we first met.

My mouth went dry.

I turned it over.

My father had written a date.

And beneath it:

First appearance.

I opened the envelope.

Inside were several printed pages.

The first was a copy of my father’s bank transaction history.

Five years earlier, exactly one month before Daniel approached me in the university library, someone had transferred 200,000 yuan into my father’s account.

The sender’s name made no sense.

Chen Yongsheng.

Daniel’s father.

I stared at it until the letters blurred.

Why would Daniel’s father give my father money before Daniel and I even knew each other?

The next page contained another transfer.

My father had returned the entire amount three days later.

A handwritten note appeared beside it.

He wants me to convince her. I refused.

Convince me of what?

I turned the page.

A printed email.

No sender address.

Only the body remained.

Your daughter will eventually marry into the Chen family. Whether you cooperate now only determines how difficult we make the process.

My fingers went cold.

I reached for the USB drive.

There was an old laptop on my father’s desk.

I turned it on.

Inserted the drive.

Only one folder appeared.

Its name was:

DANIEL CHEN — READ AFTER ONE YEAR

I stopped breathing.

My father hadn’t simply distrusted my husband.

He had investigated him.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Photographs.

Company registrations.

Property records.

Phone logs.

And one audio file.

I clicked it.

Static.

Then my father’s voice.

“Daniel, my daughter believes you met by accident.”

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

His voice.

Younger, but unmistakable.

“I know.”

My father continued.

“You knew who she was before you approached her.”

“Yes.”

“Because of the money?”

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Because of what she inherits.”

My hand flew to my mouth.

What I inherit?

My father was a retired teacher.

We had never been wealthy.

The recording continued.

My father’s voice became colder.

“You will leave her alone.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“I can’t do that.”

“Why?”

Another pause.

Then came the sentence that made my entire body go numb.

“Because your daughter is the only person who can legally unlock the account.”

The audio suddenly ended.

I stared at the laptop.

The 1,200,000 yuan was not the inheritance.

It was a warning.

Then my phone vibrated.

Daniel.

I didn’t answer.

A message arrived.

Where are you?

Another.

Did you go to your father’s apartment?

My breathing stopped.

How did he know?

Then I heard something outside.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Coming up the sixth-floor stairs.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, Daniel’s message contained only six words.

Don’t open what he left you.

The footsteps stopped outside the apartment.

And then someone quietly inserted a key into the front door.
