Judge Hall slowly opened the blue binder.
The courtroom remained perfectly still.
Alexander folded his arms with forced confidence.
Gregory leaned back in his chair.
“Your Honor,” he said smoothly, “before we waste the court’s time, I’d remind everyone that emotional allegations are not evidence.”
“I agree,” I replied.
“That’s why I brought evidence.”
I pressed a small remote.
A courtroom speaker crackled to life.
Alexander frowned.
The first recording began.
His own voice filled the room.
“Don’t answer her calls anymore.”
“If Karina gets desperate enough, she’ll look unstable.”
The smile disappeared from Gregory’s face.
A second recording followed.
This time it was Josephine.
“Once the baby is born, we’ll tell the judge she abandoned the child voluntarily.”
“No mother recovering from childbirth can fight us.”
A murmur spread through the gallery.
Judge Hall raised a hand.
“Silence.”
Gregory stood abruptly.
“Your Honor, we object to the authenticity—”
“I anticipated that.”
I handed another folder to the bailiff.
“Certified forensic authentication.”
“The recordings were extracted from Alexander Simmons’ corporate cloud backup after they were deleted.”
“My former position with the Wisconsin State Prosecutor’s Office required digital evidence authentication.”
Judge Hall glanced through the certification.
“Objection overruled.”
Alexander’s face turned pale.
Bianca slowly turned toward him.
“You told me she disappeared.”
He swallowed.
“I…”
“You said she abandoned the baby before birth.”
Another recording interrupted him.
Alexander’s own voice echoed again.
“We’ll file emergency custody before she leaves the hospital.”
“The judge only needs to believe she’s emotionally unstable for a few weeks.”
Bianca’s expression changed completely.
She looked down at the gold bracelet on her wrist.
Then at me.
Finally…
At the sleeping baby.
Very slowly, she unclasped the bracelet.
Josephine grabbed her wrist.
“What are you doing?”
Bianca pulled away.
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“You lied to me.”
Alexander reached toward her.
“Bianca, let me explain.”
She stepped backward.
“You said your wife abandoned your daughter.”
“You said you were rescuing a child.”
She looked directly at Judge Hall.
“I need to testify.”
Gregory’s eyes widened.
“Bianca, sit down.”
“I won’t.”
She walked to the witness stand without another word.
After taking the oath, she opened her purse.
“I didn’t know any of this.”
“But after Alexander moved into my apartment…”
“I found something.”
She removed a flash drive.
“He told me to destroy it.”
“I couldn’t.”
The courtroom technician connected the drive.
Hundreds of text messages appeared.
Messages between Alexander…
His mother…
And Gregory.

One message froze the entire courtroom.
“Delay the birth announcement.”
“If Karina files first, we lose control of the estate.”
Another followed.
“Move the bracelet to Bianca.”
“It will make everyone believe she’s already the baby’s future mother.”
Josephine closed her eyes.
Alexander whispered only one word.
“No…”
Just then the courtroom doors opened again.
Three federal agents entered alongside my attorney.
He placed a sealed envelope before Judge Hall.
“Your Honor…”
“The temporary custody hearing can no longer proceed as scheduled.”
Judge Hall looked up.
“Why not?”
“Because as of fifteen minutes ago…”
He paused before delivering the sentence that made Alexander collapse back into his chair.
“Alexander Simmons, Gregory Lawson, and Josephine Simmons have all been named in a federal indictment involving financial fraud, witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to interfere with parental rights.”
As two agents stepped toward Alexander…
Judge Hall quietly looked down at my sleeping daughter.
Then back at me.
“Mrs. Simmons…”
“It appears this hearing is no longer about deciding who should raise your child.”
“It’s about determining how many crimes were committed before she was even born.”
