Clarissa closed the bedroom door behind her.
Dustin silently folded his clothes into a small backpack.
He never asked whether Grandma Alana was really leaving.
He only whispered one question.
“Mom… are you angry because I told the truth?”
Clarissa knelt and hugged him tightly.
“No.”
“I’m angry because no child should ever be afraid to tell the truth.”
She waited until he was in the bathroom before opening the family security app on her phone.
Months earlier, after a break-in nearby, she had installed cameras around the country house.
Most recorded only the outside.
But one overlooked the kitchen entrance.
She scrolled back through the previous week.
At first she saw ordinary moments.
Breakfast.
Television.
Children playing.
Then the pattern became impossible to ignore.
Every meal was the same.
Mason ate at the table.
Dustin sat alone.
Whenever Parker called to check on his son, Alana deliberately moved the phone so only Mason appeared on camera.
One recording made Clarissa’s hands tremble.
Dustin quietly asked,
“Can I have one piece of chicken?”
Ellie laughed.
“Food like this is for real family.”
Alana took the plate away before the boy could touch it.
Clarissa immediately copied every video to cloud storage.
Just then her phone rang.
Parker.
She answered without speaking.
Ellie’s voice came through first.
“Your wife has completely lost her mind. She’s throwing your own mother out because Dustin threw a tantrum.”
Parker sighed.
“Put Clarissa on.”
“She can hear you,” Clarissa replied calmly.
There was a long silence.
Then Parker spoke.
“Can we wait until I get there?”
“No.”
“I’ve already seen enough.”
She ended the call.
Forty minutes later, another notification appeared.
Someone was trying to disable the security cameras remotely.
Clarissa frowned.
Only three people had administrator access.
She.
Parker.
And…
Parker’s email had just been used to log in from a hotel in Miami.

She opened the activity log.
The same account had accessed the cameras repeatedly over the past three months.
Not to protect the house.
To monitor Dustin.
As she continued scrolling, she found a deleted audio file that had automatically backed up to the cloud.
She pressed play.
Ellie’s voice filled the room.
“If Parker signs after the summer, the house becomes much easier to challenge.”
Alana answered without hesitation.
“Break the boy first.”
“If Dustin leaves on his own, Clarissa will follow.”
“Then Parker won’t have anyone stopping the sale.”
Clarissa stared at the screen in disbelief.
The cold potato…
The humiliation…
The cruelty…
None of it had been about discipline.
It had been the first step in a plan to force her and her son out of the house before Parker signed documents he didn’t even know existed.
