“Claire, what are you doing here?”

Ethan Blake’s voice cracked through the Grand Plaza ballroom like a gunshot, silencing conversations and drawing every eye toward the marble staircase where I stood.

His champagne glass froze halfway to his lips.

Beside him, Vanessa Stone tightened her grip around his arm and smiled with the confidence of someone who believed the battle was already over.

Around them, nearly two hundred guests suddenly found reasons to stop talking. Forks hovered above designer plates. A waiter paused mid-step, balancing a silver tray. Even the orchestra seemed quieter as curiosity swept through the room.

I continued down the staircase without rushing.

The lavender dress flowing around my ankles was the same dress Ethan had chosen for me three weeks earlier.

“That one,” he had said outside a Madison Avenue boutique, pointing through the display window. “That’s you.”

Back then, I thought we were planning our future.

I was wrong.

The memory hit me like a fresh wound.

Just days ago, Ethan had come home wearing his tuxedo, glanced at the dress hanging in my closet, and casually informed me that I would not be attending the biggest night of his career.

“You’ll have to stay home.”

I laughed at first.

Then I realized he wasn’t joking.

“Why?”

“It’s complicated.”

“Complicated how?”

Without looking me in the eye, he adjusted his cuff links.

“Vanessa is coming with me.”

Four years.

Four years of helping him build his company from the ground up. Four years of editing investor presentations after midnight, calming panic attacks, covering expenses when payroll collapsed, and postponing my own dreams because we were supposedly building something together.

Now he stood across the ballroom with another woman on his arm.

And somehow expected me to disappear quietly.

“I was invited,” I said.

“No, you weren’t,” Ethan replied sharply.

Vanessa laughed.

“Claire, this is getting embarrassing.”

“Is it?”

Her smile faltered.

“Everyone knows Ethan brought me.”

Behind them, Ethan’s mother avoided my gaze entirely, staring at the floor as though I were the problem.

Then Vanessa noticed the old gold watch on my wrist.

My father’s watch.

The one Ethan always mocked.

“How charming,” she said. “Vintage.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Leave now, Claire, before you make this worse.”

Inside my clutch rested a cream-colored invitation embossed with the crest of Rashid International Development.

My name was printed on it.

Not Ethan’s.

Mine.

Before I could reveal it, a sudden wave of movement swept through the ballroom.

The crowd parted instantly.

Sheikh Adrian Rashid had arrived.

The most powerful investor in the room.

The man Ethan had spent months desperately trying to impress.

“Your Highness,” Ethan said eagerly, extending his hand.

The sheikh walked straight past him.

Past Vanessa.

Past everyone.

Then stopped directly in front of me.

“Claire.”

The room went silent.

A warm smile crossed his face as recognition lit his eyes.

“Some people,” he said softly, “fail to recognize the most valuable person in the room.”

Ethan’s face turned pale.

Then the sheikh extended his hand toward me.

“Would you join me for the announcement?”

I met Ethan’s stunned gaze.

Then slowly opened my clutch.

Because the invitation wasn’t the only thing I had brought tonight.

It also contained the document that could destroy everything he had built.
