PART 2 — THE FIRST RECORDING

The morning of the wedding, Saint Bartholomew’s Chapel was overflowing.

Business executives.

City officials.

Investors.

Reporters.

Everyone had come to celebrate Adrian Vale’s perfect new beginning.

No one noticed me until I walked through the front doors beside Elena Ruiz.

The whispers started immediately.

“She actually came.”

“I thought she’d disappeared.”

“She must still be obsessed with him.”

Adrian turned as the music stopped.

His smile spread slowly across his face.

“Well,” he called loudly, making sure every guest could hear, “look who’s still desperate for my attention.”

Vanessa laughed softly beside him.

She was wearing the same cathedral-length veil I had chosen years earlier.

I felt nothing.

Not jealousy.

Not anger.

Only certainty.

I stopped three rows from the altar.

“I brought you a wedding gift.”

Adrian smirked.

“You couldn’t afford one.”

Elena calmly placed a small portable speaker on the front pew.

Then she connected a flash drive.

“What is this?” Adrian asked.

“My toast.”

Before anyone could stop me, I pressed play.

Static filled the chapel.

Then Adrian’s voice echoed through the sanctuary.

Clear.

Undeniable.

“If she ever reports me, nobody will believe her. Bruises fade.”

The room froze.

Another recording began.

“She signs whatever I put in front of her after I scare her enough.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

The third recording followed immediately.

“The offshore accounts are untouchable. They’re hidden through four shell companies.”

His attorney stood up abruptly.

“Turn that off!”

I didn’t move.

The fourth recording played.

“If the auditors ever look too closely, I’ll move the federal housing money before anyone notices.”

Several guests exchanged alarmed looks.

One man wearing a dark suit quietly pulled out his phone.

Adrian finally rushed toward me.

“You manipulated those recordings!”

“No.”

“You’re editing my voice!”

Elena stepped between us.

“At least wait until the forensic experts finish authenticating them.”

Adrian stopped.

“Forensic… what?”

She smiled.

“We submitted every original file to federal investigators six weeks ago.”

His face turned completely white.

The chapel doors opened.

Two FBI agents entered first.

Behind them came detectives from the financial crimes division.

Finally, two uniformed police officers approached the altar.

One agent unfolded an arrest warrant.

“Adrian Vale…”

“You are under arrest for financial fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and domestic assault.”

Vanessa stumbled backward.

“This has to be a mistake!”

The agent calmly replied,

“We don’t arrest people because of one recording.”

He placed a thick evidence folder on the altar.

“We arrest them because we have five hundred and eighteen.”

The entire chapel erupted.

Guests hurried toward the exits.

Investors grabbed their phones.

Reporters began recording.

The officers secured Adrian’s wrists in handcuffs.

He stared at me with pure disbelief.

“You planned this.”

“For months.”

“You destroyed my life.”

I stepped close enough that only he could hear me.

“No.”

“You destroyed it every time you thought no one was listening.”

Then I leaned toward his ear.

“Darling…”

His breathing stopped.

“This is only the first recording.”

His eyes widened.

“What do you mean?”

I smiled for the first time in years.

“Tomorrow, your business partners will hear the second.”

“And the day after that…”

“Your board of directors will hear the third.”

I turned and walked toward the chapel doors.

Before I reached them, one of the FBI agents called my name.

“Mrs. Vale.”

I stopped.

“We’ve recovered something from one of Mr. Vale’s encrypted accounts.”

He handed Elena a sealed evidence envelope.

She opened it.

Inside wasn’t another financial ledger.

It was a hospital file.

My name was on the cover.

So was a date from seven years earlier.

The date of the night Adrian told everyone I’d fallen down the stairs.

Elena slowly looked at me.

“You need to see this.”

Because whatever Adrian had hidden inside that medical record…

…was worse than every beating he had ever admitted to.
