PART 2 — THE MEN WHO ARRIVED BEFORE I DID

Garrett Stone answered on the first ring.

He did not ask why I was calling.

He did not ask where I was.

He asked only one question.

“Is Lily alive?”

I looked at the live feed.

The front porch camera had gone dark.

Only the garage camera remained online.

“I don’t know,” I admitted.

There was half a second of silence.

Then Garrett’s voice changed.

Cold.

Professional.

“I’ve got it.”

The call ended.

I looked at my watch.

2:14 p.m.

The jet had already begun descending toward Bradley Air National Guard Base.

Three hours and forty-one minutes still separated me from my front door.

For Lily…

…it might as well have been forever.

My phone vibrated again.

Mrs. Archer.

“They took her inside,” she whispered.

“I heard Lily crying.”

“Marlene keeps yelling that she’ll stop screaming once she learns respect.”

Behind her, another woman laughed.

Then the line disconnected.

I closed my eyes.

Not because I had given up.

Because I needed one second to control the anger threatening to overwhelm twenty-seven years of military discipline.

The pilot looked over his shoulder.

“We’ll be on the ground in eighteen minutes, Colonel.”

“Thank you.”

When the aircraft touched down, a black SUV was already waiting beside the runway.

No ceremony.

No escort.

Just speed.

As we raced toward Fairfield, my phone displayed another notification.

Front Door Camera Offline.

Then another.

Living Room Camera Offline.

Someone inside my house was disconnecting the security system.

They had realized they were being watched.

Too late.

Every recording had already been uploaded automatically to three encrypted cloud servers.

Garrett called again.

“We’re outside.”

“Who’s with you?”

“Two retired operators.”

“One off-duty state trooper.”

“And Fairfield PD is two minutes behind us.”

“You’re not going in unless Lily’s in immediate danger,” I ordered.

“I know the rules.”

He paused.

“Elias…”

“…I can hear her crying.”

My hands tightened around the phone.

“Go.”

The call ended.

For the longest thirty seconds of my life…

…I heard nothing.

Then shouting erupted through the open line.

A door crashed open.

Someone screamed.

A woman’s furious voice shouted,

“You can’t come in here!”

Garrett answered with complete calm.

“We already did.”

More shouting.

Heavy footsteps.

A child crying.

Then Garrett’s voice again.

“Lily!”

A tiny sob answered him.

“Mr. Garrett…”

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

“Your dad sent us.”

“She thought he wasn’t coming,” Lily whispered.

“I know.”

“But he never stopped.”

At that exact moment, Fairfield police arrived.

Body cameras began recording.

One officer walked into the kitchen.

Another immediately smelled gasoline.

“What is that odor?”

Nobody answered.

The red fuel can still sat beside the dining table.

Nearly full.

An officer picked it up carefully.

“This isn’t water.”

Another officer noticed Claire still holding her phone.

“What were you recording?”

Claire tried to smile.

“It was only a family prank.”

Garrett slowly turned toward her.

His expression never changed.

“An eight-year-old child soaked in fuel while multiple adults laughed…”

“…isn’t a prank.”

The officers separated everyone.

Lily remained wrapped in Garrett’s jacket.

Still shaking.

Still crying.

When one female officer gently asked who had poured the liquid on her…

Lily lifted one trembling finger.

Straight toward Brooke.

The entire room went silent.

Then another officer spoke into his radio.

“We’re going to need additional units…”

“…and detectives from the child abuse division.”

Three hours later…

…I finally reached my driveway.

Police vehicles lined the street.

Television crews had already begun arriving.

Yellow evidence markers covered the front lawn.

And my daughter…

…the little girl I had watched through a security camera from thirty thousand feet…

…ran into my arms so hard that we both fell to our knees.

She buried her face against my shoulder.

“I knew you’d come, Daddy.”

I held her tighter than I had ever held anyone in my life.

“I’ll always come.”

Behind us, detectives were carrying sealed evidence boxes out of my house.

One detective approached quietly.

“Colonel Reed…”

“We’ve found something upstairs.”

He handed me a clear evidence bag.

Inside was Claire’s phone.

Still recording.

Still saving video.

And the final clip…

…had captured far more than anyone inside that house realized.
