PART 2 — THE RECORDING HE NEVER EXPECTED

I stared at the empty storage folder.

Nothing.

Thirty-eight minutes of the most terrifying night of my life…

…and there was no recording.

Only the screen capture I had made while watching the live feed.

It showed Daniel entering the room.

It showed him climbing into Sophie’s bed.

It showed him leaving thirty-eight minutes later.

But it couldn’t tell me what they had said.

Without audio, he would claim he had simply comforted his frightened daughter.

I needed the truth.

At 7:03 that morning, my scheduled email reached Maya Chen.

She called before I could make coffee.

“Claire.”

“I know.”

“I’ve already watched it.”

There was a long silence.

“Don’t confront him.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

“Because if he’s coaching Sophie, he’ll already have a response prepared.”

I looked toward the kitchen.

Daniel was laughing with Sophie while making pancakes.

She smiled when he spoke.

But she never looked directly at him.

Instead, her eyes kept drifting toward the floor.

As though she were trying not to forget something.

That afternoon, after Daniel left for work, I asked Sophie whether she wanted to help me organize her room.

She nodded.

While folding clothes, I casually measured the bed.

Standard twin.

Nothing unusual.

Then I lifted the pillow.

Nothing.

I checked beneath the mattress.

Nothing.

Inside the nightstand…

…I found lavender dryer sheets.

My stomach tightened.

We had never bought lavender anything.

“Sophie.”

She froze.

“Who put these here?”

“Daddy.”

“Why?”

“He said they help me sleep.”

“When?”

She hesitated.

“Every night.”

I carefully placed the packet into an evidence bag from my home office.

Then I noticed something else.

Tiny scratches beneath the ceramic lamp.

Perfectly square.

Exactly the size of the black object Daniel had placed there.

He hadn’t been hiding a phone.

He’d been placing something in the exact same position every night.

That evening I hired a digital-forensics consultant my company had used during internal fraud investigations.

His name was Victor Ruiz.

He arrived carrying equipment that looked more appropriate for a federal laboratory than a suburban bedroom.

Within twenty minutes he found it.

A magnetic mount hidden beneath the lamp base.

“There used to be a recording device here,” he said.

“What kind?”

“High-capacity digital audio recorder.”

“It wasn’t recording video?”

“No.”

“Just sound.”

My pulse quickened.

“So every conversation…”

“…was likely recorded.”

He looked at me gravely.

“If the device is still in the house, there’s a chance the files remain.”

That night, Daniel behaved exactly as he always had.

He kissed my forehead.

Asked about my day.

Read Sophie a bedtime story.

At 10:17 he came to bed.

At 2:58…

…he quietly got up again.

This time I was waiting.

The hidden camera streamed to my phone.

Victor’s equipment monitored nearby wireless signals from my office downstairs.

At 3:06 Daniel entered Sophie’s room.

At exactly 3:07…

…Victor texted me.

DEVICE DETECTED.

A second message followed.

REMOTE BACKUP STARTING.

I watched Daniel place the small black recorder beside the lamp.

He never realized another device had already connected to it.

Thirty-seven minutes later he returned to our bedroom.

Victor called immediately.

“I have everything.”

“The recordings?”

“Every file still stored on the device.”

“Can you hear them?”

“I already sampled one.”

His voice changed.

“Claire…”

“What?”

“You need to come now.”

I drove to his office before sunrise.

Victor didn’t speak as he handed me the headphones.

He simply pressed PLAY.

Daniel’s voice filled my ears.

“Tell me what Mommy forgets.”

A tiny voice answered.

“I don’t remember.”

“You have to try harder.”

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“If Mommy starts crying…”

“…who are you supposed to tell?”

Sophie’s trembling whisper nearly stopped my heart.

“The judge.”

Victor reached forward and paused the recording.

“That’s not the worst part.”

“There are fifty-eight separate audio files.”

He opened the folder.

The oldest recording wasn’t from last week.

Or last month.

The timestamp read…

Fourteen months earlier.

More than five months…

…before Sophie had ever started saying her bed was too small.
