Mara looked at the packed shelves lining her cabin.
Every photograph.
Every medical textbook.
Every memory of the quiet life she had spent six years rebuilding.
Five minutes.
That was all Dante believed remained.
She folded her arms.
“I’m not leaving.”
Marco stared at her as if she had lost her mind.
“Ma’am…”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
She pointed toward the window.
“Four hundred twenty armed men surrounded my property without asking.”
“Now another group wants me dead.”
“So before anyone gives me orders…”
“You explain exactly why.”
Silence settled across the room.
Dante slowly lowered himself back into the chair.
His wound had started bleeding again.
“Luca.”
The boy immediately climbed beside him.
“You remember what I taught you?”
Luca nodded.
“Truth first.”
Dante looked at Mara.
“My father built the Bellaro organization.”
“Weapons.”
“Shipping.”
Protection.”
“When he died…”
“My younger brother, Rocco, wanted everything.”
“So did you?” Mara asked.
“No.”
“I wanted out.”
She frowned.
“You expect me to believe the head of one of the most feared crime families wanted a normal life?”
Dante smiled bitterly.
“My wife believed the same thing.”
“What happened to her?”
For the first time…
The room became painfully quiet.
Luca buried his face against his father’s side.
“She died protecting him.”
Dante rested one hand on the boy’s hair.
“Rocco arranged the attack.”
“He wanted every heir removed.”
Marco stepped forward.
“The convoy was ambushed yesterday afternoon.”
“Twenty-three men died.”
“The boss barely escaped.”
“We believed the snowstorm helped us disappear.”
“It did.”
“Until someone saw smoke coming from this chimney.”
Mara glanced toward her woodstove.
The fire that had saved their lives…
Had also betrayed her location.
A sharp whistle echoed outside.
Every guard instantly moved.
Weapons came up.
Radios crackled.
“Movement west tree line.”
“Thermal contact.”
“Possible sniper.”
Marco rushed toward the window.
“They’re early.”
Dante struggled to his feet.
“No.”
Mara stepped directly in front of him.
“Sit down.”
“I’m not hiding while my people—”
“If you tear those stitches…”
“You’ll die before anyone shoots you.”
Their eyes locked.
For a moment…
The feared mafia boss looked exactly like every stubborn patient Mara had ever treated.
She pointed toward the chair.
“You’re under my care.”
“You don’t get a vote.”
To Marco’s complete disbelief…
Dante actually sat down.
Outside…
The first gunshot shattered the morning.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Luca flinched violently.
Mara immediately covered his ears.
“It’s okay.”
“No, it isn’t,” he whispered.
“I know.”
She looked toward Marco.
“How many attackers?”
“We don’t know.”
“They’re using the forest.”
Another explosion shook the cabin.
Snow poured from the roof.
One of Dante’s men burst through the front door.
“Boss!”
“They’ve got RPGs!”
“They’re trying to force us toward the lake!”
Dante rose again.
This time Mara didn’t stop him.
Instead…
She walked into the hallway.
“What are you doing?” Marco asked.
She opened a heavy wooden cabinet.
Inside…
Instead of blankets…
Lay rows of trauma equipment.
Portable ventilators.
Field surgical kits.
Military emergency supplies.
Marco blinked.
“This isn’t clinic equipment.”
“No.”
Mara removed two large medical backpacks.
She tossed one toward him.
“How many medics do you have?”
“Four.”
“Not anymore.”
She slung the bag across her shoulder.
“Now you have five.”
Dante stared.
“You’ve worked in combat.”

She met his eyes.
“I told you I left Detroit because I was tired of treating gunshot wounds.”
“I never said they all happened inside hospitals.”
Before anyone could ask another question…
A second explosion blasted through the trees.
The windows rattled violently.
One shattered.
Bullets tore across the porch.
Marco shouted into his radio.
“They’ve reached the cabin!”
Dante instinctively pulled Luca behind him.
Mara calmly locked the medicine cabinet.
Then she looked at the frightened little boy.
“Luca.”
He looked up.
“I’m going to need you to be very brave.”
He nodded without speaking.
She smiled gently.
“I had a feeling you would.”
Outside…
Hundreds of engines suddenly roared louder than before.
Another convoy.
Even larger.
One of Dante’s guards shouted in disbelief.
“More vehicles!”
Marco looked toward the road.
His face lost all color.
“Boss…”
“Those aren’t ours.”
Dante stepped to the shattered window.
Across the frozen lake…
Hundreds of additional black SUVs emerged through the blizzard.
Not Bellaro vehicles.
Different insignias.
Different formations.
Different army.
Then every radio inside the cabin transmitted the same message simultaneously.
“Unknown convoy requesting direct communication.”
“They claim they’re here for…”
There was a long pause.
The guard sounded genuinely confused.
“…Doctor Mara Ellis.”
Every person inside the cabin turned toward her.
Mara’s expression changed for the first time.
Very slightly.
Then she whispered only three words.
“Oh… no.”
Outside…
More than six hundred armed men now surrounded the tiny cabin from two different directions.
And neither army had come to leave empty-handed.
