Part 2: THE BILL THAT EXPOSED THE ENTIRE FAMILY

I put my phone back into my bag.

Noah looked up from his toy car.

“Mommy, are we going home after this?”

“Yes.”

“Will Daddy eat with us?”

I smiled, but it hurt.

“We’ll see.”

Ten minutes later, my phone rang again.

This time it was Michael.

His voice sounded unusually tense.

“Laura… where are you?”

“At KFC.”

“You need to come back.”

“Why?”

“There’s… a problem.”

I took another bite of my hamburger.

“What kind of problem?”

“The hotel says the banquet hasn’t been paid for.”

I almost laughed.

“Isn’t Daniel paying?”

“He says the payment card isn’t working.”

“And?”

“They’re asking the family to settle the bill.”

“How much?”

Michael hesitated.

“One hundred eighty-three thousand yuan.”

I slowly placed my drink on the table.

“That is unfortunate.”

“Laura, please.”

“Why are you calling me?”

“You know how Mom is.”

“Yes.”

“She says… she thought you already transferred the banquet money.”

I finally understood.

Three months earlier, Daniel had asked Michael to book the hotel.

Michael had begged me to handle the payment because he was “too busy.”

I had agreed.

But after discovering Noah and I had been removed from the guest list…

I canceled the transfer before the hotel’s payment deadline.

No one had bothered asking whether I still intended to pay.

They simply assumed I would.

Just like always.

“Laura,” Michael whispered, “everyone is waiting.”

“So was Noah.”

Silence.

“He’s only a child.”

“Exactly.”

“And somehow your family couldn’t find one chair for him.”

“I know.”

“No.”

“You only know it now.”

His breathing grew heavier.

“Mom is furious.”

“I imagine she is.”

“She says the hotel is threatening to call the police.”

“They usually do when someone refuses to pay.”

“Laura… please help us.”

I looked at Noah happily eating fries across from me.

For the first time that entire day…

My son was smiling without feeling unwanted.

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“I won’t.”

Then I ended the call.

Less than five minutes later…

Daniel called.

The moment I answered, he exploded.

“Laura! What kind of game are you playing?”

“No game.”

“You promised to handle the payment.”

“I never promised anything after you removed my son from the guest list.”

“You’re doing this because of two seats?”

“No.”

“I’m doing this because you decided my child wasn’t family.”

“You’re embarrassing everyone!”

I quietly asked,

“Did you save any seats for the people paying the bill?”

He stopped speaking.

“You reserved fifty tables.”

“One hundred eighty thousand yuan.”

“And somehow there wasn’t room for the woman expected to finance your celebration.”

“You’re unbelievable!”

“So are you.”

He lowered his voice.

“If you don’t come right now… don’t blame me for what happens afterward.”

I smiled.

“That sounds like a threat.”

“I—”

“I’ve already forwarded our conversation to my lawyer.”

The line went silent.

Then disconnected.

An hour later…

Videos from the hotel began appearing in family group chats.

Guests arguing.

Managers refusing to release decorations.

Relatives quietly slipping out side exits to avoid paying.

Daniel shouting that someone had sabotaged him.

My mother-in-law demanding discounts because they were “longtime customers.”

No one volunteered to cover the bill.

Not one of the relatives who had laughed while Noah and I walked away.

Finally…

My cousin sent one last video.

The hotel manager stood calmly before the Zhou family and asked a single question.

“If Mrs. Laura wasn’t considered important enough to receive two seats…”

“Why did you expect her to pay for all fifty tables?”

No one answered.

Not Daniel.

Not my mother-in-law.

Not even Michael.

Because for the first time…

Every guest understood exactly who had truly been supporting the Zhou family all along.

And by the following morning…

The story of the engagement banquet where fifty tables were reserved…

…but the person paying for them was left without a seat…

Had become the biggest scandal the hotel had seen in years.
