Part 2: THE GROOM I SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN

The entire marriage registry fell silent.

Ethan stared at Adrian as though he had misheard me.

“What did you just say?”

I held Adrian’s hand a little tighter.

“I said I only need to change the groom’s name.”

The clerk behind the counter looked between the three of us.

“Miss, are you requesting to cancel your previous application and submit a new one?”

“Yes.”

“Do both parties have valid identification?”

Adrian immediately handed over his ID.

“So do I.”

The clerk nodded.

“Please complete these forms.”

Ethan finally found his voice.

“Claire… stop joking.”

I looked at him calmly.

“I’ve never been more serious.”

He stepped toward me.

“You’re marrying him?”

“I was supposed to marry someone today.”

His face tightened.

“You’ve known him for what… a few months?”

I smiled faintly.

“No.”

“I’ve known Adrian for ten years.”

Ethan froze.

“You never told me that.”

“You never asked.”

For years, Adrian had been quietly standing on the edge of my life.

When I worked late, he left coffee on my desk without saying a word.

When my father was hospitalized, he stayed outside the operating room until dawn.

When I cried after postponing our wedding for the fifth time, he simply handed me a tissue and drove me home.

He never once asked me to leave Ethan.

He only said one sentence.

“If you ever stop waiting for him… I’ll be here.”

He kept that promise.

For an entire month.

Ethan looked at Adrian.

“You knew she was engaged.”

Adrian nodded.

“I did.”

“And you still came?”

“I came because she asked me.”

Those six words hit harder than any insult.

For the first time, Ethan realized that someone else had done what he had failed to do.

Show up.

Sophie stepped forward.

“Claire… you’re doing this just to make Ethan jealous.”

I turned toward her.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“If you loved him, you’d never marry another man this quickly.”

I couldn’t help smiling.

“For seven years, I postponed one wedding after another.”

“I waited through eight registration appointments.”

“I gave him thousands of second chances.”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“The only person who kept making me wait… was him.”

The clerk interrupted gently.

“Miss, please verify your information.”

I signed the paperwork.

Adrian signed immediately after me.

Neither of us hesitated.

Ethan suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Claire.”

His voice shook.

“I’ll stay.”

“I’ll forget the bracelet.”

“I’ll forget everything.”

“Let’s register now.”

I slowly removed his hand.

“For the first time in seven years…”

“You’re finally choosing me.”

He nodded desperately.

“Yes.”

I looked at the clock on the wall.

“You’re twenty minutes too late.”

His shoulders dropped.

“No…”

“Yes.”

“You taught me something today.”

“A person who truly wants to marry you never asks you to wait while they choose someone else.”

Silence filled the office.

Then the clerk smiled politely.

“Congratulations.”

“You are now legally married.”

She slid two fresh marriage certificates across the counter.

One toward me.

One toward Adrian.

For a moment, I simply stared at the document.

My new husband’s name.

Adrian Cole.

No hesitation.

No interruption.

No emergencies.

No Sophie.

Just certainty.

As we walked outside, Ethan remained standing in the middle of the registry office, staring at the certificate that would never bear his name.

Rain had begun falling softly.

Adrian removed his coat and placed it over my shoulders.

“You’ll catch a cold.”

“You’re still thinking about everyone else,” I teased quietly.

He laughed.

“I’ve been thinking about you for a very long time.”

We had barely reached the parking lot when someone called my name.

“Claire!”

I turned.

It was Ethan.

He was running toward us.

Completely soaked.

His eyes were red.

“I made a mistake.”

“I know.”

“I’ll cut Sophie out of my life.”

“I should have done that years ago.”

“I’ll spend the rest of my life making this right.”

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I asked one simple question.

“Who called you this morning?”

He frowned.

“What?”

“The bracelet.”

“How did Sophie know exactly when we were about to register?”

His face slowly changed.

“She…”

“She said she was shopping nearby.”

I took out my phone.

Then opened a folder I had saved months earlier.

Screenshots.

Call logs.

Messages.

Photos.

Every canceled registration appointment.

Every emergency.

Every coincidence.

Every one of them had started with a phone call from Sophie within ten minutes of our scheduled appointment.

I handed him the phone.

“You should look at the timestamps.”

He scrolled.

His breathing slowed.

Then stopped.

The eighth screenshot showed something different.

A message Sophie had accidentally sent to me instead of one of her friends.

Don’t worry. I stopped them again. He chose me, just like always.

Below it was another message, sent only seconds later.

One more time and she’ll finally give up.

Ethan’s hands began shaking.

“She… planned all of this?”

“I think you already know the answer.”

He looked toward the registry building.

Then toward the empty place where Sophie had been standing only moments earlier.

She was gone.

Completely gone.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

A new message from Sophie appeared on the screen.

He opened it with trembling fingers.

It contained only one sentence.

If you really loved her, you would never have left me eight times to run after someone else.

Ethan looked up at me.

For the first time in seven years…

He finally understood that he had never lost me because of Adrian.

He had lost me one choice at a time.

And by the time he realized it…

Someone else had already chosen me without hesitation.
