PART 2: THE TEST RESULT THAT BROKE HIM

Adrian didn’t blink.

He didn’t breathe.

He simply stared at the laboratory report in my hand as if the letters had suddenly become a language he no longer understood.

“…What?”

His voice cracked.

I looked down at the paperwork again.

“The Infectious Diseases Department confirmed the diagnosis yesterday morning.”

He grabbed the first page before I could fold it.

His hands were shaking so violently that the paper rattled.

“This… this has to be fake.”

“It isn’t.”

“You made this.”

“I’m a trauma surgeon, Adrian.”

I met his eyes calmly.

“I don’t forge medical records.”

His breathing became shallow.

“No…”

“No…”

He immediately pulled out his phone.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

He called again.

Voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

His confidence disappeared with every unanswered call.

“You’ve been sleeping with her for how long?” I asked quietly.

He looked at me as though he had forgotten I was still there.

“What?”

“You seemed proud enough to tell me every detail a minute ago.”

His lips trembled.

“…Four months.”

I nodded slowly.

“So that means you were still seeing her last week.”

His face turned completely white.

“I…”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t remember?”

“I…”

He couldn’t finish.

For the first time since our marriage, Adrian Lloyd looked genuinely terrified.

Not because he had lost me.

Because he suddenly feared for himself.

He jumped out of the car so abruptly that the door slammed against the curb.

I watched him pace back and forth beneath the streetlights.

He dialed Vanessa again.

And again.

And again.

Still nothing.

When he returned to the driver’s seat, sweat covered his forehead despite the cool October night.

“I need to go to the hospital.”

“I know.”

“You’ll help me.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was the same assumption he had always carried.

That I would fix whatever he broke.

I smiled sadly.

“No.”

He stared at me.

“What?”

“You should register through the emergency department like every other patient.”

“I’m your husband.”

I looked at him for several long seconds.

“Were.”

His jaw tightened.

“Evelyn…”

“My name is Amelia.”

He froze.

For so many months, he had become so accustomed to controlling me that he had called me by another patient’s name.

He hadn’t even noticed.

I reached into my bag again.

“There is something else.”

I handed him another sealed envelope.

“This one really is for you.”

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

Inside were divorce papers.

Already signed.

Already notarized.

His breathing stopped.

“You prepared these?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Before tonight?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me in disbelief.

“You already knew about Vanessa?”

“I knew enough.”

His eyes widened.

“How?”

I laughed softly.

“The same way I discovered Ryan.”

His expression changed.

“I hired a private investigator the day you suddenly started protecting your phone.”

I pulled out one final photograph.

Vanessa and Adrian.

Leaving a boutique hotel together.

Date.

Time.

Location.

Everything documented.

“I wasn’t waiting for proof of the affair.”

“I was waiting to see whether you still had enough honesty to confess before I confronted you.”

He lowered his head.

“I…”

“You failed.”

Silence filled the Maybach.

Finally, he whispered,

“Can we fix this?”

I almost didn’t recognize the question.

Just twenty minutes earlier, he had described in detail how he slept with my former best friend in the very seat I occupied.

Now he wanted another chance.

“I spent two years rebuilding myself after Ryan destroyed my first marriage.”

I looked out through the windshield.

“Do you know why I married you?”

He shook his head.

“Because I believed no one could possibly be cruel in exactly the same way twice.”

Another silence.

“I was wrong.”

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

“Mr. Lloyd?”

“Yes.”

“This is Manhattan General Infectious Diseases.”

He looked at me.

His face had already become gray.

“We’ve been trying to reach Ms. Vanessa Stone for forty-eight hours.”

“I…”

“We understand you may have been identified as a recent close contact.”

His hand began trembling again.

“We strongly advise you not to delay testing.”

He couldn’t speak.

The doctor continued.

“Please report to the hospital immediately.”

The call ended.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

“I…”

He looked at me with genuine fear.

“What if…”

I interrupted him.

“Then you’ll receive treatment.”

He blinked.

“That’s all you’re going to say?”

“What else should I say?”

“I destroyed our marriage.”

“Yes.”

“I humiliated you.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t hate me?”

I looked at the man who had deliberately tried to reopen every wound my first husband had left behind.

Then I answered honestly.

“No.”

He frowned.

“I don’t hate you anymore.”

“What do you feel?”

I opened the car door.

“Nothing.”

Those single words hurt him more than any scream ever could.

I stepped onto the sidewalk.

The divorce papers remained in his lap.

The medical referral remained in his hand.

The luxury car he had once been so proud of suddenly looked like a prison.

Before closing the door, I looked at him one last time.

“Adrian.”

He lifted his head.

“I truly hope your test comes back negative.”

It was the first completely sincere thing I had said to him all night.

Then I walked away.

I didn’t look back.

Not because I was angry.

But because some doors deserve to close only once.

Three months later, the divorce was finalized.

Adrian’s test results were negative.

Vanessa disappeared from New York shortly after receiving treatment.

As for me…

I finally understood that surviving betrayal isn’t about finding someone who promises never to hurt you.

It’s about becoming someone who never stays where cruelty is mistaken for love.
