Part 2: THE MAN WHO CHOSE ME AT LAST

Adrian stared at the jade pendant hanging from my hand.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Isabella…”

His voice was no longer filled with confidence.

It carried something I had not heard in years.

Fear.

I looked at him calmly.

“You asked for your mother’s ring.”

“I’m only asking for my family’s pendant.”

He clenched his jaw.

“I’ll return it after the wedding.”

I smiled faintly.

“There won’t be another wedding between us.”

Those words struck harder than any slap.

For the first time in ten years, Adrian realized I was no longer threatening to leave.

I had already left.

Mia stepped forward.

“Miss Hayes, you’re only trying to make Adrian jealous.”

I shook my head.

“If I wanted him jealous, I would have done it years ago.”

“I simply stopped waiting.”

Outside, the sound of military vehicles entering the estate echoed through the courtyard.

The wedding procession had arrived.

Mrs. Shaw hurried into the bridal room with tears in her eyes.

“Victor is here.”

She took my hands.

“My child… are you still willing?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

She hugged me tightly.

“Thank you.”

As the ceremony began, every guest stood.

The doors slowly opened.

Victor Shaw entered in his ceremonial military uniform.

The old scars along one side of his face were visible beneath the afternoon sunlight.

His posture remained perfectly straight despite the injuries everyone whispered about.

The ballroom became silent.

He walked directly toward me.

Not toward the guests.

Not toward the officiant.

Toward me.

When he stopped in front of me, he spoke softly.

“Miss Hayes…”

“You still have time to change your mind.”

I looked into his calm eyes.

“For ten years, everyone else made decisions for me.”

“This one is mine.”

“I won’t change it.”

For the first time, the corner of Victor’s lips lifted into a faint smile.

The ceremony began.

Every vow was spoken clearly.

Every signature was written without hesitation.

When the marriage certificate was placed before us, I signed my name first.

Isabella Shaw.

Victor signed immediately afterward.

The officiant smiled warmly.

“Congratulations.”

“You are now husband and wife.”

The applause filled the hall.

Adrian stood motionless near the entrance.

His eyes never left me.

He suddenly rushed forward.

“No!”

The entire ballroom turned.

“This marriage isn’t valid!”

Victor slowly stepped between us.

“It was approved by the military registry.”

“There was a mistake!”

“There wasn’t.”

Adrian pointed toward me.

“She was supposed to marry me!”

Victor looked at him calmly.

“Then why is your name not on the marriage report?”

Silence.

Adrian couldn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

He had changed it himself.

Mrs. Shaw slowly stood.

Her voice was firm.

“You altered an official military document.”

“You humiliated Isabella eight times.”

“And now you dare interrupt her wedding?”

She looked at her eldest nephew with disappointment.

“You have brought shame upon the Shaw family.”

Mia grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“Let’s go.”

He didn’t move.

Instead, he looked directly at me.

“I’m sorry.”

The words came too late.

“I was wrong.”

“I thought you would always forgive me.”

“I thought you would always wait.”

I smiled gently.

“I know.”

He stepped closer.

“If you ask…”

“I’ll cancel everything.”

“I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”

I slowly shook my head.

“For ten years…”

“I loved you with everything I had.”

“You never protected that love.”

“I finally learned something.”

He stared at me silently.

“The person who deserves forever…”

“…is the one who never asks you to wait.”

Victor quietly took my hand.

His grip was warm.

Steady.

Certain.

Not possessive.

Simply reassuring.

The wedding guests watched in complete silence.

Adrian looked at our joined hands.

His shoulders slowly fell.

He finally understood.

He had not lost me because of Victor.

He had lost me the day he chose someone else’s feelings over mine.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Months passed.

Marriage to Victor was nothing like I had imagined.

He never demanded affection.

Never compared me to anyone.

Never asked me to become someone else.

Instead, he waited patiently while I learned how to trust again.

One rainy evening, we sat together on the porch overlooking the garden.

He handed me a small wooden box.

Inside rested the jade pendant of the Hayes family.

“I asked Adrian to return it,” Victor said quietly.

“He refused at first.”

“But family honor still means something.”

I picked up the pendant with trembling fingers.

Beside it lay another piece of jewelry.

His mother’s wedding bracelet.

“I can’t accept this.”

“You already have.”

He smiled.

“My mother wanted the woman who became part of this family to wear it.”

I looked at him through tear-filled eyes.

“Victor…”

“I never asked whether you loved me.”

“You didn’t.”

“Because I wanted you to discover the answer yourself.”

I reached for his hand.

For the first time since my eighteenth birthday…

I was the one who closed the distance.

“I have.”

He looked at me quietly.

“What did you discover?”

I smiled.

“I spent ten years chasing someone who kept walking away.”

“Then I met a man who simply stood beside me.”

“I thought I was marrying your name.”

I slipped the bracelet onto my wrist.

“But somewhere along the way…”

“I fell in love with you.”

Victor’s usually calm expression finally broke into a genuine smile.

He gently embraced me beneath the soft evening rain.

Not as the substitute groom.

Not as Adrian’s uncle.

But as my husband.

The man who had never asked me to wait.

And for the first time in many years…

Home no longer felt like a place I was hoping to reach.

It was already in his arms.
