PART 2: THE DEBT THAT WAS NEVER PAID

The knock at the front door came three times.

Not loud.

Not violent.

Just slow… confident.

Keaton and Bernice looked at each other as though every drop of blood had drained from their bodies.

Neither of them moved.

I stood up first.

“Who’s coming?” I asked.

“No one,” Bernice answered too quickly.

The knocking came again.

This time accompanied by a man’s voice.

“Mrs. Bernice Holloway? We know you’re inside.”

Keaton rushed toward the entrance.

“Don’t open it!”

That was the exact moment I realized something was terribly wrong.

I folded my arms.

“Either you explain what’s happening, or I open that door myself.”

Neither answered.

The silence told me more than any confession could.

I walked past Keaton despite his attempt to block me and unlocked the deadbolt.

Outside stood two professionally dressed men carrying leather briefcases, accompanied by a woman wearing a navy blazer.

She smiled politely.

“Good evening. Are you the owner of this property?”

“I co-own it with my husband.”

Her expression immediately changed.

“I’m afraid we need to discuss an outstanding financial matter.”

My stomach tightened.

“What financial matter?”

She opened a folder.

“There is an unpaid home equity loan secured against this apartment.”

I blinked.

“…What loan?”

She looked surprised.

“You weren’t informed?”

“No.”

She slowly turned the papers around so I could read them.

Loan Amount:

$486,000.

Approval Date:

Fourteen months earlier.

Collateral:

Our apartment.

I felt the room spinning.

“That’s impossible.”

The woman frowned.

“The signatures appear to indicate that both owners approved the transaction.”

I grabbed the document.

The signature beside my name looked almost identical to mine.

Almost.

But not quite.

Someone had forged it.

I turned toward Keaton.

“What… is… this?”

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Bernice suddenly stepped between us.

“It isn’t what you think.”

I laughed.

For the first time that evening.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t process the insanity unfolding in front of me.

“It literally says someone borrowed almost half a million dollars using MY HOME.”

Keaton finally spoke.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When everything was fixed.”

“What exactly needed fixing?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“My brother Austin…”

Of course.

Austin.

The same brother whose message had appeared on his phone.

“He got into trouble.”

“What kind of trouble requires nearly five hundred thousand dollars?”

No answer.

The woman from the lending company quietly added,

“The account has missed six consecutive payments.”

I stared at her.

“Six?”

She nodded.

“Late fees and accumulated interest have increased the outstanding balance.”

I looked back at my husband.

“While I was paying every mortgage installment…”

“…you weren’t paying THIS one?”

His eyes remained on the floor.

Bernice stepped closer.

“We intended to catch up.”

“With what money?”

She hesitated.

“Your promotion…”

Everything suddenly became crystal clear.

My twelve-thousand-dollar salary.

Their excitement.

Keaton giving his paycheck to his mother.

Demanding I pay every household expense.

None of it had been about generosity.

They had been preparing to use me as the emergency bailout.

“You planned this.”

Keaton looked horrified.

“No…”

“You expected me to unknowingly rescue the debt.”

“I was trying to protect everyone.”

“By committing fraud?”

The representative quietly cleared her throat.

“There is another issue.”

I looked at her.

“What now?”

She removed another document.

“This property has also been listed as collateral with a private lender.”

Silence.

Even the air seemed to disappear from the room.

“What?”

“It appears there are two separate loans.”

I slowly turned toward Bernice.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t angry.

She simply looked defeated.

Keaton whispered,

“…Mom?”

The representative continued.

“The private lender has demanded immediate repayment.”

“And if it isn’t paid?”

She looked directly at me.

“They have begun foreclosure proceedings.”

My knees nearly gave way.

Everything I had worked for.

Every overtime shift.

Every missed holiday.

Every dollar invested into this apartment…

Could disappear.

Because of decisions I never made.

I walked to the dining table.

The two cups of instant noodles were still sitting there.

Cold.

Swollen.

Completely untouched.

I looked at them for several long seconds before speaking.

“So that’s why.”

Keaton frowned.

“What?”

“You didn’t care about dinner.”

“You cared about my paycheck.”

He tried reaching for my hand.

“I love you.”

I stepped back.

“No.”

“You don’t.”

“You love what I earn.”

Bernice suddenly burst into tears.

“I only wanted to save Austin.”

I turned toward her.

“Then why forge my signature?”

She covered her face.

“I didn’t…”

My eyes moved to Keaton.

His breathing stopped.

I already had my answer.

“You forged it.”

“I had no choice.”

“There is ALWAYS a choice.”

“I thought we’d pay it back before you noticed.”

“Half a million dollars?”

He couldn’t answer.

The representative closed her folder.

“We’ll need legal confirmation regarding the disputed signature.”

Disputed.

That single word echoed in my head.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Identity theft.

Mortgage deception.

All committed by the man I had trusted enough to marry.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Normally I ignored unknown calls.

This time…

I answered.

“Hello?”

A deep male voice spoke calmly.

“Is this Mrs. Holloway?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Victor Sloan.”

“I represent Mr. Daniel Mercer.”

“I believe your husband borrowed another one hundred and eighty thousand dollars from my client.”

I froze.

“…Another?”

“Yes.”

“And according to our records…”

He paused.

“…your husband promised that if payment failed…”

“…ownership of the apartment would be transferred directly to us.”

The room fell completely silent.

I slowly lifted my eyes toward Keaton.

His face had turned ghost white.

Then Victor Sloan said the sentence that made my heart stop.

“Mrs. Holloway…”

“…there’s something about your apartment that your husband never knew.”

“And I think you deserve to hear it before anyone else does.”
