PART 2: THE FALL OF THE FALSE HEIR

The ballroom remained completely silent.

It was not the silence of surprise.

It was the silence of fear.

The executives who had applauded Marcus’s promotion only minutes earlier now avoided looking at him. Some slowly lowered their glasses. Others checked their phones, as though they could somehow erase every congratulatory message they had sent him.

Lily was still lying on the floor, clutching her stomach.

“My baby!” she screamed through her tears. “Sophia is trying to kill our child!”

Marcus struggled against the security guards.

“Call an ambulance! Now!”

I looked at my assistant.

“Do it.”

Marcus seemed surprised.

Perhaps he had expected me to refuse Lily medical treatment. Perhaps he needed to portray me as a monster so he could justify what he had done.

But I was not going to give him that satisfaction.

“Have a doctor examine her,” I added. “And make sure the medical report is officially recorded.”

Lily suddenly lifted her head.

For one brief second, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.

Not fear for the baby.

Fear of the examination.

My assistant made a phone call. Less than five minutes later, the hotel’s private medical team entered the ballroom with a stretcher.

When they tried to help Lily, she resisted.

“I don’t need a doctor. I just need to rest.”

The female doctor frowned.

“You claimed to be experiencing abdominal pain after a fall. We need to examine you immediately.”

“I said I’m fine!”

The guests began whispering again.

Marcus looked at her in confusion.

“Lily, let them examine you.”

She pressed her lips together.

“I don’t want anyone touching me.”

I folded my arms.

“Then perhaps you should stop using a baby as a shield.”

Lily glared at me with hatred.

“You’re jealous because I can give Marcus a child.”

“I’m not jealous.”

I stepped closer.

“I’m simply waiting for the doctor to confirm how many months pregnant you are.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

I opened my handbag and removed an envelope.

“Two months ago, I found a receipt from a private clinic in your jacket pocket. I didn’t say anything because I wanted to know how far the two of you were willing to take this lie.”

Lily stopped crying.

Marcus blinked.

“What receipt?”

I handed him a copy.

Lily Grant’s name appeared at the top.

Below it was the date of her appointment.

And clearly printed across the page were the words:

PREGNANCY TEST: NEGATIVE.

“That proves nothing,” Lily stammered. “I could have become pregnant afterward.”

“Of course.”

I removed another document.

“But three weeks ago, you completed a mandatory medical examination to renew your corporate health insurance.”

I placed the report on the table.

That pregnancy test was negative too.

The ballroom erupted with shocked voices.

Marcus snatched the document from the table.

“Lily… what does this mean?”

She attempted to stand.

“It’s fake. Sophia fabricated it.”

“The reports can be verified directly with the clinic,” I replied. “And the doctor standing beside you can perform another test right now.”

Lily stepped backward.

That was enough.

Marcus released her as though he had just discovered a snake in his arms.

“You’re not pregnant?”

She looked around desperately, searching for an escape.

“I… was going to be.”

Her answer was so ridiculous that no one reacted at first.

Marcus turned pale.

“What do you mean you were going to be?”

Lily finally dropped her innocent mask.

“You promised you would leave Sophia. You said that if I gave you an heir, your family would accept us. We only needed more time.”

“So you invented everything?”

“I did it for us!”

Marcus took a step away from her.

For the first time that evening, I almost felt sorry for him.

Not because he had been deceived.

But because he was finally looking at a perfect reflection of the person he had become.

Ambitious.

Dishonest.

Willing to use anyone to get what he wanted.

My assistant approached and handed me a tablet.

“Madam President, the board has confirmed the cancellation. All funds have been withdrawn from the transaction.”

The confirmation appeared on the screen:

TEN-BILLION-YUAN INVESTMENT: CANCELED.

Harold Reed, the president of Reed Technologies, rose unsteadily from his chair.

He was Marcus’s uncle and the man who had approved his promotion that very evening.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he said, his voice trembling, “we can discuss this privately. The entire company should not suffer because of a marital dispute.”

“This stopped being a marital dispute a long time ago.”

I opened the black folder.

“During our investigation before approving the investment, my financial team discovered inflated contracts, duplicate invoices, and payments made to shell companies.”

Harold’s face went white.

Marcus stared at me.

“Shell companies?”

I spread several documents across the table.

“Three of them were created by Lily.”

Every head turned toward her.

“That’s a lie,” she whispered.

“The fourth belongs to Marcus.”

He dropped the papers.

“I didn’t know anything about this.”

“Your signature appears on every transfer.”

“Lily told me they were client bonuses.”

“And you never questioned why those ‘bonuses’ were being transferred into a personal account?”

Marcus could not answer.

The numbers answered for him.

For eighteen months, Lily and Marcus had diverted millions from the company. Lily created fraudulent invoices, while Marcus approved the payments using his access to the commercial department.

His promotion had never been the result of talent.

It had been part of their plan to gain greater financial authority.

Harold collapsed into his chair.

“You’ve destroyed us.”

“No,” I said calmly. “You destroyed yourselves.”

At that moment, the ballroom doors opened again.

Six officers from the financial crimes division entered.

The security director pointed toward Marcus, Lily, and Harold.

“We have arrest warrants for corporate fraud, document forgery, and embezzlement.”

Lily ran toward a side exit.

She did not get far.

Two officers intercepted her before she could reach the curtains.

“It was all Marcus’s idea!” she screamed. “He told me Sophia was useless! He said that once the investment arrived, he would divorce her and make me the chief executive’s wife!”

Marcus stared at her in horror.

“You planned the fake invoices!”

“But you signed them!”

As they argued, the officers placed them in handcuffs.

Marcus turned toward me.

“Sophia, please.”

That single word reminded me of every night I had helped correct his reports while he slept.

Every phone call I had made to secure meetings for him.

Every time I had hidden my true position to protect his pride.

“I can explain,” he continued. “She manipulated me. I still love you.”

I slowly approached him.

“You don’t love anyone, Marcus.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“We can start over.”

“No.”

I removed my wedding ring.

For the final time, I looked at the symbol of the marriage I had spent years trying to save.

Then I dropped it onto the divorce papers.

“I began again months ago, on the day I realized you preferred a lie that fed your ego over a wife who had given you everything.”

The officers led him away.

Before leaving the ballroom, Marcus looked back at the stage where he had accepted everyone’s applause only an hour earlier.

Now no one admired him.

No one defended him.

Only his official photograph remained projected across the enormous screen beneath the words:

THE FUTURE OF REED TECHNOLOGIES.

My assistant pressed a button.

The image disappeared.

Six months later, Reed Technologies filed for bankruptcy.

Harold was convicted of covering up fraudulent transactions. Lily agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence, but her confession confirmed that she and Marcus had planned to steal part of the ten-billion-yuan investment.

Marcus was sentenced to eight years in prison.

During the trial, he attempted to claim that I had withdrawn the money out of revenge.

However, independent auditors proved that Reed Technologies had already become insolvent and that my investment would have funded their crimes.

The divorce was resolved quickly.

Marcus attempted to claim part of my fortune.

He received nothing.

The prenuptial agreement he had once mocked protected all my assets, companies, and investments.

The last time I saw him was inside the courtroom.

He looked ten years older.

“Did you ever truly love me?” he asked.

I thought carefully before answering.

“Yes. But I loved the man I believed you could become.”

Then I walked away without looking back.

One year later, during my own corporate group’s annual gala, I stood onstage before hundreds of employees.

There were no mistresses pretending to be pregnant.

No husbands taking credit for my achievements.

No reason for me to hide.

My assistant handed me the quarterly report.

We had used part of the ten billion yuan withdrawn from Reed Technologies to fund small businesses founded by women who had been excluded from major investment programs.

The first round of investments had created more than twelve thousand jobs.

When I finished my speech, the entire ballroom rose to its feet.

Not because I was someone’s wife.

Not because I had rescued a man from his own mediocrity.

But because everyone finally knew my real identity.

Sophia Bennett, founder and president of the most powerful financial group in the region.

I smiled as the applause filled the room.

Marcus had believed that divorce was the greatest threat he could use against me.

But he never understood that losing him was not my punishment.

It was my freedom.
