PART 2: THE THIRD WOMAN ADRIAN NEVER EXPECTED

For several seconds, Adrian said nothing.

Only his breathing came through the speaker.

Then:

—Elena, where are you?

I looked at Vanessa.

—Why? Afraid your wives might compare schedules?

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

Adrian lowered his voice.

—Don’t do anything stupid. I’ll come over.

—No need.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

—Just answer one question.

Silence.

—Which one of us did you actually marry on May twentieth?

His breathing stopped.

Vanessa leaned toward the phone.

—Adrian.

He didn’t answer.

She raised her voice.

—ANSWER ME.

Finally, Adrian said:

—Vanessa, calm down.

That was all it took.

She laughed.

Not happily.

It was the laugh of a woman who had suddenly realized the floor beneath her had never been real.

—You told me Elena was obsessed with you.

Adrian said nothing.

—You told me she forged documents.

Silence.

Vanessa’s voice began trembling.

—You told me I was your only legal wife.

I looked at her.

For the first time, we weren’t enemies.

We were two women staring at the same liar from opposite sides of his life.

Then I asked:

—And who was “third from the beginning”?

Adrian immediately said:

—Elena, enough.

Wrong answer.

I opened the folder my lawyer had given me that morning.

Inside was a certified marriage record.

Not mine.

Not Vanessa’s.

A third woman’s.

Rachel Dawson.

Married to Adrian Cole in 2019.

Never legally divorced.

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

—What is that?

I slid the record toward her.

—Apparently neither of us was his first wife.

Her lips parted.

—No.

I nodded slowly.

—Your marriage certificate is invalid.

Then I touched mine.

—So is mine.

The room went completely silent.

Adrian finally shouted through the phone:

—Where did you get that?

I smiled.

—That sounds like confirmation.

And I hung up.

Rachel Dawson was alive.

And furious.

My attorney found her less than twenty-four hours later.

She lived in Boston under her maiden name and had spent years believing Adrian had finalized their divorce while she was overseas.

He hadn’t.

Instead, he had forged paperwork, remarried Vanessa, then later repeated the same trick with me.

Three women.

Three ceremonies.

Three sets of promises.

And apparently one man convinced he could keep every world separated forever.

Rachel joined us by video call.

The moment she saw Adrian’s photograph, she said:

—That man told me he couldn’t have children.

Vanessa looked toward the picture of her three-year-old son.

I looked down at my stomach.

Nobody spoke.

Rachel continued:

—He emptied our joint investment account before I left. Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

—He did the same to me.

She opened her banking app.

Over the previous two years, Adrian had persuaded her to transfer money into “family investments.”

Almost seven hundred thousand dollars.

I had invested even more.

Not because he asked directly.

Because I had helped finance the business he claimed belonged entirely to him.

That was when I finally understood the real pattern.

Adrian didn’t simply collect wives.

He collected resources.

When he arrived at the attorney’s office that evening, all three of us were waiting.

Rachel on a screen.

Vanessa beside me.

Me with a hand resting over my unborn child.

Adrian stopped at the door.

His confidence disappeared.

—Elena.

I shook my head.

—Sit down.

He didn’t.

Vanessa threw her certificate onto the table.

—Is this fake?

—It’s complicated.

She laughed.

—No. Fraud isn’t complicated.

Adrian looked at me.

—You shouldn’t be here under stress. Think about the baby.

I almost admired the nerve.

—Which baby?

His expression changed.

—Mine?

I leaned back.

—Funny. Vanessa’s lawsuit says my baby belongs to a married man.

Vanessa flinched.

I continued:

—Except legally, you’re still married to Rachel.

Rachel’s voice came through the screen.

—Hello, husband.

Adrian went white.

For once, there was nowhere left to run.

The investigation became much larger than any divorce.

Forgery.

Fraud.

False financial disclosures.

Multiple improperly registered marriages.

Hidden accounts.

And the business empire Adrian loved boasting about?

Partly built using money taken from all three of us.

His family knew enough to understand something was wrong.

But not everything.

My mother-in-law had protected Vanessa because she believed Vanessa’s wealthy family connections were useful.

She tolerated me because Adrian told her I brought access to another investment network.

When the truth became public, the family turned on itself almost overnight.

Adrian blamed Vanessa.

Vanessa released financial records.

His mother blamed me.

Rachel produced the oldest documents.

I did only one thing.

I stopped protecting him.

The lawsuit Vanessa had filed against me disappeared immediately.

Then something unexpected happened.

She apologized.

Not dramatically.

Not with tears.

She simply came to my apartment one afternoon and placed a folder on the table.

—These are copies of everything Adrian gave me.

Messages.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Contracts.

I looked at her.

—Why are you helping me?

She gave a bitter smile.

—Because I spent years believing you were the woman destroying my family.

Her eyes lowered.

—Turns out we were both living inside someone else’s lie.

I accepted the folder.

We never became friends.

But we stopped being enemies.

That was enough.

Adrian tried contacting me until the day my son was born.

I didn’t answer.

He sent flowers.

Returned.

Letters.

Unopened.

Then he appeared at the hospital.

Security stopped him downstairs.

He sent one final message:

“Please let me see my son.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then replied:

“You’ll follow whatever legal arrangement is established. Nothing more.”

He answered instantly:

“Elena, I loved you.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I typed:

“You loved being believed.”

Then I blocked him.

Two years later, I saw Vanessa again outside the courthouse.

Her son was holding her hand.

Mine was asleep against my shoulder.

Rachel had flown in to testify at the final financial hearing.

The three of us stood together for less than a minute.

Three women who should never have met.

Three lives Adrian had carefully kept separate.

Rachel looked at us and shook her head.

—He really thought none of us would ever compare notes.

Vanessa smiled.

—That was his biggest mistake.

I looked through the courthouse doors.

Adrian stood on the other side speaking with his attorney.

He looked older.

Smaller somehow.

Not because he had lost money.

Not because his reputation was gone.

Because his greatest weapon had always been secrecy.

And once the women he had lied to stood in the same room…

he had nothing left.

I kissed my son’s forehead.

Three months pregnant, I had entered that meeting believing another woman wanted me to erase my child.

By the end of the day, I discovered something far worse.

Neither Vanessa nor I had been competing for a husband.

We had been defending two different versions of a man who had never existed.

And when Adrian finally lost everything, it wasn’t because one wife destroyed him.

It was because all three of us stopped believing him at the same time.

THE END.
