PART 2: HE CAME TO LONDON FOR HIS WIFE… AND FOUND HER NAME ON THE COMPANY HE SERVED

Adrian arrived at Quinn Global at 2:17 that afternoon.

I knew because security called my office.

“Ms. Quinn, there is a Mr. Adrian Shaw downstairs. He says he is your husband.”

I looked through the glass wall toward the Thames.

“Tell him he needs an appointment.”

There was a pause.

“He says it’s urgent.”

“So is my meeting.”

I hung up.

Ten minutes later, Henry entered carrying a tablet.

“He’s refusing to leave.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Security?”

“Waiting for your instruction.”

I almost told them to escort him out.

Then another thought occurred to me.

“Send him to conference room twelve.”

Henry studied my face.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

I closed the NordTech file.

“And invite Margaret Wells.”

My divorce attorney arrived before Adrian.

Margaret was fifty-six, elegant, calm, and terrifying in the way only people who never need to raise their voices can be.

She placed a folder beside me.

“I reviewed his custody threat.”

“And?”

“He’s bluffing.”

That didn’t surprise me.

“You had written authorization to travel internationally with Lily for thirty days, signed by Adrian eight months ago.”

I blinked.

“The Paris authorization?”

“Broad wording. Multiple jurisdictions.”

Margaret smiled slightly.

“Lawyers should read documents before signing them.”

I almost laughed.

Adrian had prepared that authorization himself because he had been too busy to travel with us.

Now his own signature protected me.

The door opened.

Adrian walked in.

He stopped immediately.

Not because of Margaret.

Because of me.

For three years, he had mostly seen me in soft sweaters, carrying Lily, cooking dinner, apologizing for things I hadn’t done.

Now I wore a charcoal suit.

My hair was tied back.

Behind my chair, etched into the glass wall, were the words:

VICTORIA QUINN
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR — INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY

Adrian read them twice.

“You work here?”

I gestured toward the chair.

“Sit.”

He didn’t.

“What the hell is this?”

Margaret opened her folder.

“Mr. Shaw—”

“I’m talking to my wife.”

“No,” I said.

His eyes snapped toward me.

“You’re talking to the woman filing for divorce.”

That finally made him sit.

“Victoria, stop.”

Margaret slid the petition across the table.

He didn’t touch it.

Instead, he stared at me.

“This is because I slapped you?”

The simplicity of the question almost took my breath away.

“Do you hear yourself?”

“I apologized.”

“No. You said you ‘got emotional.’ Then you blamed me.”

“Vanessa was humiliated.”

“So you hit your wife.”

His jaw tightened.

“You always hated her.”

“I tolerated her for three years.”

“She’s been my friend since childhood.”

“And I was your wife.”

Silence.

Margaret spoke.

“Mr. Shaw, we should also address your threat regarding Lily.”

Adrian leaned back.

“My daughter was taken out of the country.”

“With authorization bearing your signature.”

She placed the document in front of him.

He read it.

His expression slowly changed.

Then he looked at me.

“You planned this.”

I almost smiled.

“No, Adrian. I simply kept the paperwork you were too arrogant to remember signing.

He pushed the document away.

“I’m taking Lily home.”

“Lily is home.”

His face hardened.

“In London?”

“Yes.”

“You expect me to let my daughter grow up here?”

I leaned forward.

“You remembered you had a daughter twelve hours after you hit her mother.”

His nostrils flared.

“You don’t get to use Lily against me.”

“I’m not.”

I looked straight into his eyes.

“But neither do you.”

His phone vibrated.

He ignored it.

Then again.

And again.

Finally he looked.

His face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Henry entered without knocking.

That alone told me it mattered.

“Victoria, Langford Group’s board is requesting an emergency call.”

Adrian looked up sharply.

“Why?”

Henry didn’t acknowledge him.

“The NordTech seller has suspended Langford from the bidding process.”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

I looked at Henry.

“Reason?”

“Disclosure concerns. Apparently Langford failed to report a conflict involving one of its external legal advisers.”

Slowly, I turned toward Adrian.

His face had gone pale.

Margaret noticed too.

“What conflict?”

Henry placed a document before me.

Adrian Shaw’s name was highlighted.

External counsel.

Langford Group.

And beneath it:

Prior undisclosed marital connection to senior Quinn Global executive.

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew Quinn Global was competing for NordTech.”

He didn’t answer.

“You represented Langford while your wife’s company was bidding against them.”

“I didn’t know you worked here.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

His silence answered for him.

Henry added:

“There’s more.”

He handed me another report.

Someone associated with Langford had received confidential information about Quinn Global’s maximum bid range.

Only six people had access.

I was one.

Henry was another.

The remaining four were sitting in this building.

Adrian stared at the report.

“This is absurd.”

I looked at him.

“Is it?”

“You think I leaked your company’s information?”

“I think you spent three years believing I was too insignificant to possess information worth stealing.”

That landed.

His face changed.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“Check Vanessa.”

The room went still.

I narrowed my eyes.

“What?”

Adrian looked at Henry.

“Check Vanessa Lang’s communications.”

Henry’s expression didn’t change.

“Why?”

Adrian hesitated.

And for the first time since entering the room, he looked genuinely uncertain.

“Because she asked me questions.”

My stomach tightened.

“What questions?”

“About Victoria.”

I laughed coldly.

“That narrows it down.”

“I’m serious.”

He looked at me.

“About your family. Your finances. Whether you had investments. Whether your parents still lived in England.”

“When?”

“For months.”

I stopped smiling.

“You never thought that was strange?”

“I thought she was trying to understand why you were always so private.”

“Why would she care?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Henry did.

“Because Langford began preparing its NordTech acquisition six months ago.”

Exactly when Vanessa’s interest in me had suddenly intensified.

The expensive lunches.

The invitations.

The questions disguised as jokes.

Victoria, your accent changes when you’re angry. Did you study abroad?

Your mother sends Lily British books, doesn’t she?

You never talk about your parents. Are they embarrassed by Adrian?

I had thought she was mocking me.

Maybe she had been investigating me.

Margaret closed the divorce folder.

“This conversation has become significantly more complicated.”

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“Victoria, I didn’t know.”

“Your favorite sentence.”

His eyes flashed.

“I didn’t know who you were.”

And there it was.

The sentence that destroyed whatever microscopic piece of me might still have wanted an apology.

I stared at him.

“That was never the problem.”

“What?”

“You shouldn’t have needed to know my last name before respecting me.”

He went silent.

My phone vibrated.

Henry’s did too.

Then Margaret’s.

Three notifications within seconds.

Henry checked his first.

His face changed.

“Victoria.”

“What?”

He turned the tablet toward me.

A financial news alert filled the screen.

LANGFORD GROUP DENIES INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE ALLEGATIONS; LEGAL COUNSEL ADRIAN SHAW NAMED IN INTERNAL REVIEW

Adrian snatched out his phone.

Calls flooded the screen.

His managing partner.

Langford’s chairman.

Three clients.

Then Vanessa.

He answered her.

“What did you do?”

I couldn’t hear her answer.

But Adrian’s expression slowly shifted from anger to disbelief.

“Vanessa…”

A pause.

“No. I never gave you permission to use those files.”

Another pause.

His face went white.

“What do you mean you logged into my laptop?”

Henry and I exchanged a look.

Adrian suddenly stood.

“When?”

Whatever Vanessa said next made him stop moving.

Then his eyes lifted toward me.

Not angry anymore.

Terrified.

He ended the call.

“What?” I asked.

He swallowed.

“Vanessa had access to my home office.”

“Your home office?”

“Our home.”

The room became silent.

Adrian spoke more slowly.

“She says she copied files from my computer.”

My stomach tightened.

“What files?”

He looked at me.

“Everything.”

The NordTech correspondence.

Client records.

My old documents.

Our financial files.

Maybe even Lily’s information.

Then Henry’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And turned pale.

When he hung up, he looked directly at me.

“Security found the source of the leak.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

He placed the tablet on the table.

An internal access record appeared.

The confidential NordTech files had been opened repeatedly through a Quinn Global credential.

I stared at the username.

It belonged to someone I trusted completely.

Someone who had known I was returning to London before almost anyone else.

Someone who knew about my mother.

About Lily.

About Adrian.

About the acquisition.

My throat went dry.

Henry whispered:

“Victoria… the account belongs to Ethan.”

My younger brother.
