PART 2: THE ULTRASOUND HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE

The doctor spread warm gel across my abdomen.

“Try to relax,” she said.

I almost laughed.

Nathan Sterling was standing less than twenty meters away.

Relaxation was no longer an option.

The ultrasound probe moved slowly.

Gray shadows appeared on the monitor.

Then came the sound.

Fast.

Steady.

Alive.

My baby’s heartbeat.

Every fear I had carried into the hospital disappeared for one precious second.

The doctor smiled.

“Everything looks good.”

My eyes filled immediately.

“Really?”

“Growth is normal. Heart rate is strong.”

She adjusted the image.

“Would you like to know the sex when we can confirm it?”

I shook my head.

“Not yet.”

I wanted one thing that belonged only to me.

One surprise Nathan Sterling had not touched.

The doctor printed several images.

Then she frowned at my file.

“Your emergency contact section is blank.”

“I don’t have one.”

She looked at me.

“You’re almost four months pregnant. You should have someone.”

“I can manage.”

The words sounded familiar.

I had said them throughout my marriage.

When Nathan worked until midnight.

When I ate alone.

When I had a fever.

When our anniversary passed without him noticing.

I can manage.

The doctor didn’t argue.

She handed me the ultrasound photographs.

“Your blood test results should be available this afternoon. Don’t skip the next appointment.”

I nodded.

When I opened the door, Nathan was waiting.

He had not left.

He stood against the opposite wall with both hands in his coat pockets.

Owen was nowhere to be seen.

I stopped.

Nathan’s eyes went immediately to the photographs in my hand.

“You waited?”

His expression remained unreadable.

“You said we had nothing to discuss.”

“We don’t.”

I walked past him.

He followed.

“Sofía.”

I kept moving.

“How long have you known?”

I stopped beside the elevator.

“Why does it matter?”

His jaw tightened.

“Answer me.”

I turned.

“That tone stopped working the day we divorced.”

The elevator arrived.

I stepped inside.

Nathan followed.

I pressed the ground floor button.

He pressed nothing.

The doors closed.

For several seconds, the only sound was the machinery above us.

Then he said:

“You knew before signing.”

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at the changing floor numbers.

“Yes.”

His breathing changed.

“You knew you were carrying my child and signed a document saying we had no children?”

“I knew I was pregnant.”

“And you said nothing.”

I finally looked at him.

“You told me our marriage was over.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s the only one you’re getting.”

His eyes hardened.

Then he saw the ultrasound pictures again.

He reached toward them.

I pulled my hand away.

“No.”

Nathan froze.

“They’re mine too.”

The words came quietly.

Possessively.

Something inside me snapped.

“No.”

He stared at me.

“The baby may share your blood, Nathan. That doesn’t mean everything about this pregnancy suddenly belongs to you.”

The elevator doors opened.

I walked out.

He followed me into the hospital lobby.

Outside, rain streaked the glass doors.

“Sofía.”

I turned sharply.

“What exactly do you want?”

He stopped.

For the first time, he had no immediate answer.

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s what I thought.”

I started walking again.

Then a woman’s voice called from behind us.

“Nathan?”

I stopped.

So did he.

A young woman stood near the specialist corridor.

Pale.

Elegant.

About my age.

One hand held a medical folder against her chest.

The other rested protectively over her abdomen.

Chloe.

It had to be.

My fingers tightened around my bag.

She approached us.

Her eyes moved from Nathan to me.

Then down.

To my stomach.

Her face changed.

“Oh.”

One syllable.

That was all.

But it contained recognition.

Nathan stepped toward her.

“Why are you out here?”

“I finished.”

Her eyes remained on me.

Then she asked:

“Is this Sofía?”

My heart sank.

She knew my name.

I looked at Nathan.

He said nothing.

Chloe offered a small, awkward smile.

“I’ve heard a lot about you.”

I nearly laughed.

“Apparently I’ve heard nothing about you.”

Nathan’s expression darkened.

“Sofía.”

“What?”

I looked directly at Chloe.

“Are you the reason he’s here?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

Of course.

I nodded.

“That answers enough.”

I turned away.

Chloe immediately said:

“Wait.”

I stopped reluctantly.

She looked confused.

“Nathan didn’t tell you?”

“No.”

Her eyes moved toward him.

“Nathan…”

“Not here,” he said.

That response made everything worse.

I smiled without humor.

“Don’t worry. Your private matters aren’t my concern anymore.”

I walked toward the doors.

Then Chloe said something that stopped me completely.

“But they are.”

I turned.

Her hand tightened around the medical file.

“Nathan came because my test results might affect your baby.”

For several seconds, I thought I had misheard.

“My baby?”

Nathan closed his eyes briefly.

“Chloe.”

She ignored him.

“You really didn’t tell her?”

“Tell me what?”

The color drained from Nathan’s face.

Chloe looked at me.

Then she did something unexpected.

She handed me her medical folder.

Nathan caught her wrist before I could take it.

“No.”

The word came sharper than anything he had said all morning.

Chloe stared at him.

“She has the right to know.”

“It hasn’t been confirmed.”

“What hasn’t?”

Neither answered.

My heart began pounding.

I looked from one to the other.

“What is going on?”

Nathan slowly released Chloe.

She opened the folder herself.

The first pages were blood tests.

Genetic screening.

A specialist consultation.

Then I saw the Sterling name printed in the family-history section.

I looked up.

“Who are you?”

Chloe’s eyes softened.

“My name is Chloe Sterling.”

I froze.

Sterling.

Nathan’s surname.

She continued.

“I’m Nathan’s younger sister.”

Every jealous thought I had experienced in the hallway suddenly collapsed into embarrassment.

But Nathan still looked terrified.

Which meant the real problem was something else.

Chloe turned to a marked page.

“My pregnancy ended three months ago.”

My anger disappeared.

“I’m sorry.”

She nodded.

“The doctors discovered something during the testing afterward. A hereditary mutation.”

Nathan interrupted.

“Chloe, enough.”

She shook her head.

“If Sofía is carrying a Sterling child, she needs to know.”

My hand went instinctively to my belly.

“What mutation?”

Chloe looked at Nathan.

He remained silent.

So she answered.

“One that appears almost exclusively in the men of our family.”

Cold spread through my chest.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your baby needs additional testing.”

I looked at Nathan.

“You knew?”

“I learned today.”

“That’s why you were here?”

“Yes.”

My throat tightened.

“And if Owen hadn’t seen me?”

Nathan said nothing.

I understood.

“You would have left without telling me.”

“No.”

“How would you have told me? You didn’t even know where I lived.”

His expression shifted.

That silence was different.

I stared at him.

“You knew where I lived?”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

Chloe slowly looked at her brother.

“Nathan…”

I took a step backward.

“How long?”

He didn’t answer.

“How long have you known where I was?”

Owen suddenly appeared from the corridor.

He was moving quickly.

Far too quickly.

“Mr. Sterling.”

Nathan turned.

Owen’s face was pale.

“The laboratory called.”

My heartbeat stumbled.

Nathan’s entire attention changed.

“What happened?”

Owen looked at me, hesitating.

Then at Nathan.

“The blood sample Miss Lane gave at registration this morning was flagged.”

I felt the room tilt.

“Flagged for what?”

Owen swallowed.

“The hospital system automatically compared the fetal screening profile against the Sterling family genetic file.”

Nathan went completely still.

“And?”

Owen lowered his voice.

But I heard every word.

“There’s something wrong with the paternity match.”

Nobody moved.

My fingers crushed the ultrasound photograph.

Nathan stared at Owen.

Then slowly turned toward me.

His face had lost every trace of color.

And for the first time since our divorce, the coldest man I had ever known looked genuinely afraid.

“Sofía,” he whispered, “what exactly did they tell you about your pregnancy before you left the Sterling family?”
