Part 2: SERENA POISONED MY DAUGHTER TO DRAG ADRIAN BACK—BUT THE SECRET SHE HID DESTROYED HER FIRST

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what Adrian had said.

Serena.

The woman he had chosen over me six years earlier.

The woman whose hospital bed had mattered more than our marriage.

The woman I had blamed for destroying my life.

“What do you mean, you found Serena?”

Marcus lowered the phone.

“She was stopped near Gate Twelve. Security found medical documents connected to Mia in her luggage.”

I turned toward Adrian.

“You knew she was here?”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

Then his expression darkened.

“But I knew someone had accessed Mia’s records.”

Mia tugged at my sleeve.

“Mommy, can we go home?”

I crouched and pulled both children close.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

But Adrian spoke quietly.

“Not yet.”

I shot him a furious look.

“Don’t give me orders.”

“I’m not.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“I’m asking you to let me keep our daughter alive.”

That silenced me.

Ten minutes later, airport security escorted us into a private conference room.

Noah sat beside Mia, holding her hand with the seriousness of someone much older than six.

Adrian remained on the opposite side of the room.

He didn’t try to approach them again.

For the first time since seeing him, I noticed his hands.

They were trembling.

The door opened.

Two security officers entered with Serena between them.

She looked almost exactly as I remembered.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Perfectly composed.

Until she saw me.

Her face went white.

“Elena?”

Then she noticed the twins.

Her eyes stopped on Mia.

Something ugly flashed across her expression.

Adrian saw it too.

“Why were you on Elena’s flight?”

Serena recovered quickly.

“What are you talking about? I was traveling for business.”

Marcus placed a transparent evidence bag on the table.

Inside were photocopies of Mia’s medical records.

Serena’s composure cracked.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Your credentials were used to access a private genetic database three months ago.”

“I was checking something for you.”

“For me?”

“You were devastated when you discovered you had children!”

I stared at Adrian.

“You already confronted her?”

His silence answered me.

Three months.

He had known for three months.

Yet he hadn’t contacted me.

My anger returned instantly.

“You knew Mia existed for three months and said nothing?”

Adrian looked at me.

“I wanted proof before destroying your life again.”

“You don’t get credit for restraint after what you did six years ago.”

“I know.”

No excuse.

No argument.

Just those two words.

Serena suddenly laughed.

“You’re unbelievable, Elena. You disappear with his children and somehow I’m the villain?”

I stood.

“My daughter became sick shortly after someone accessed her medical information.”

“That has nothing to do with me.”

Marcus interrupted.

“Actually, it does.”

He placed another folder on the table.

“A private investigator working for Mr. Cole discovered repeated contact between you and an employee at the Boston clinic.”

Serena’s smile vanished.

The door opened again.

A woman wearing a gray coat entered with two police officers.

I recognized her immediately.

One of the temporary nurses who had cared for Mia during her first admission.

My knees nearly gave way.

“No…”

The nurse began crying before anyone asked her a question.

“I didn’t know she was a child at first.”

Serena spun toward her.

“Shut up.”

The entire room froze.

The nurse covered her mouth.

That single command had destroyed Serena’s defense.

Adrian’s face became terrifyingly calm.

“What did she ask you to do?”

The nurse looked toward the officers.

Then at me.

“She paid me to interfere with Mia’s treatment and make her symptoms continue.”

I grabbed the edge of the table.

Mia was behind another partition with Noah now, thankfully unable to hear.

“Why?”

The nurse sobbed.

“She said nobody was supposed to be seriously hurt. She said she only needed Mr. Cole to become involved.”

I looked at Serena.

And suddenly I understood.

Mia had never been the real target.

I was.

My children were.

My return was.

Serena wanted Adrian dragged back into our lives so she could control what happened next.

But why?

Adrian asked the same question.

“What did you want?”

Serena’s eyes filled with tears.

“You.”

He stared at her.

“You had me six years ago.”

Her face twisted.

“No. I had your guilt.”

Silence.

Serena laughed bitterly.

“You never loved me the way everyone thought.”

I felt something shift inside my chest.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

Serena continued.

“The night I was hospitalized, I knew exactly what would happen. You would come because you believed you owed me.”

I looked sharply at Adrian.

“Owed you?”

His jaw tightened.

“My brother died in an accident when Serena and I were young. I blamed myself. She knew it.”

Serena smiled through her tears.

“And every time I became ill, Adrian came running.”

My stomach turned.

Six years ago, I had believed he left me because Serena was his great love.

The truth was somehow worse.

He had destroyed our marriage because he was too trapped by guilt to recognize manipulation.

Serena pointed at me.

“Then she came back. Successful. Respected. With your children. Do you know what would happen once you saw them?”

Adrian said nothing.

Serena screamed:

“You would never look at me again!”

The officers moved closer.

But Adrian’s attention remained on the medical documents.

“You risked my daughter’s life because you were afraid I would choose my family?”

Serena’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked frightened.

“Adrian—”

“Don’t say my name.”

His voice was quiet.

That frightened her more than shouting would have.

The police took Serena and the nurse away.

As she reached the doorway, Serena turned toward me.

“You think you won?”

I said nothing.

She smiled.

“He divorced you, Elena. Remember that.”

I finally answered.

“I do.”

Then I looked at Adrian.

“That’s why I don’t need to win him back.”

Serena’s smile disappeared.

The door closed.

Later that afternoon, Mia was transferred to a private hospital under police protection.

Doctors confirmed that the source of her unexplained illness had likely been external interference rather than an inherited disorder.

Her condition was treatable.

When I heard those words, I cried harder than I had in six years.

Noah hugged me.

Mia complained that everyone was squeezing her too tightly.

And Adrian stood outside the hospital room.

He didn’t enter.

Not until I opened the door.

“You can see her.”

His eyes lifted.

“Only her?”

“For now.”

He nodded.

That surprised me.

Adrian walked inside slowly.

Mia studied him.

“Are you the scary airport man?”

Noah almost laughed.

Adrian crouched.

Apparently one of the most powerful businessmen in the country had no idea what to say to a six-year-old girl.

“Yes.”

Mia considered this.

“Mom says you’re our biological father.”

He swallowed.

“She’s right.”

“Where were you?”

The question hit harder than anything I could have said.

Adrian looked at me.

Then back at her.

“I didn’t know you existed.”

Noah crossed his arms.

“And now?”

Adrian’s eyes became red.

“Now I’d like to know you.”

Noah answered immediately.

“You have to ask Mom.”

For the first time in days, I nearly smiled.

Three months later, Serena faced criminal charges, and the clinic employee who had helped her agreed to testify.

Adrian never tried to take custody from me.

Instead, he withdrew the emergency petition himself.

He transferred full decision-making authority concerning the children back to me and signed an agreement recognizing that any relationship with Noah and Mia would happen at their pace, not his.

That mattered more than any apology.

One evening, after Adrian had taken the twins for ice cream under the supervision arrangement we had agreed upon, he brought them home.

Mia ran inside carrying a ridiculous stuffed penguin.

Noah followed with two science books.

Adrian remained at the doorway.

“Elena.”

I waited.

“I found something recently.”

He handed me a folder.

Inside was the original divorce agreement from six years earlier.

The one offering me ten million dollars and a mansion.

“I kept thinking money could compensate for what I did.”

He tore the agreement in half.

Then again.

The pieces fell between us.

Just as mine had fallen at his feet six years earlier.

“I was wrong.”

I looked at him.

“Are you asking me to come back?”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“I’m asking for the chance to become someone our children won’t regret knowing.”

For once, Adrian Cole wanted nothing from me.

No obedience.

No forgiveness.

No second marriage.

Just a chance.

I stepped aside and began closing the door.

“Then start by being here next Saturday at ten. Noah has a science competition.”

Adrian’s eyes widened slightly.

“I’ll be here.”

“And Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“If you’re late, I’m not waiting.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“I know.”

I closed the door.

Six years earlier, I had walked away believing Adrian Cole had taken everything from me.

I had been wrong.

I rebuilt the career I sacrificed.

I raised two extraordinary children.

I found the woman I had buried beneath three years of marriage.

And when Adrian finally came back into my life, he didn’t find the abandoned wife he remembered.

He found Dr. Elena Morgan.

A mother.

A scientist.

A woman who no longer needed to be chosen.

And if Adrian wanted a place in our family now, he would have to earn it.

One Saturday at a time.
