PART 2: THE SECOND DNA REPORT THAT TURNED THE WEDDING INTO A NIGHTMARE

Two years after our divorce, I did not attend Adrian’s wedding.

I was thousands of miles away on Long Island, sitting beside the ocean while my four children built a crooked sandcastle on the lawn.

But at exactly 11:30 that morning, a courier walked into the Cole family’s private wedding venue carrying a white envelope addressed only to Adrian.

Inside were four photographs.

Four names.

Four DNA reports.

And my note.

Congratulations on your wedding, Adrian.
I thought it was time for you to meet the children your family bought for two hundred million dollars.

Adrian opened the envelope twenty minutes before he was supposed to walk down the aisle.

According to Serena, who had flown in for a medical conference and attended only because I asked her to make sure the envelope reached him, Adrian read the first report without understanding it.

Then the second.

Then the third.

By the fourth, he had stopped breathing normally.

Daniel Cole — probability of paternity: 99.99%.

Emma Cole — probability of paternity: 99.99%.

Nathan Cole — probability of paternity: 99.99%.

Grace Cole — probability of paternity: 99.99%.

All four were his.

Four children.

Born seven months after our divorce.

Adrian sat down so suddenly that the chair nearly overturned.

Victor Cole entered the dressing room moments later.

“What are you doing? The ceremony begins in fifteen minutes.”

Adrian silently handed him the reports.

Victor read the first page.

His face changed.

Then he looked at the remaining three.

“No.”

Adrian’s voice was almost unrecognizable.

“You knew Elena might be pregnant?”

“Of course not.”

“My mother?”

“No.”

“You threw her out carrying four of my children.”

Victor slammed the papers onto the table.

“We did what was necessary at the time.”

Adrian stared at him.

“Necessary?”

“Vivian was carrying three boys.”

“That justified paying my wife to disappear?”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“The family needed heirs.”

Adrian laughed once.

There was nothing amused in the sound.

“Apparently I already had four.”

Outside, music began.

Guests were taking their seats.

Vivian was waiting in a designer gown worth more than most people’s homes.

And Adrian suddenly looked as though the wedding had become the last place on earth he wanted to be.

He pulled out his phone.

My old number.

Disconnected.

He tried another contact.

Blocked.

Then Serena’s phone rang.

I was standing in my kitchen when she called me.

“He knows.”

I looked through the glass doors.

Daniel was chasing Nathan around the garden.

Emma had stolen Grace’s toy bucket.

Four small voices filled my home.

“How did he react?”

“Like someone just told him the last two years of his life were a lie.”

I said nothing.

Serena hesitated.

“Elena, he wants your number.”

“No.”

“I thought you’d say that.”

Behind her, I heard shouting.

A man’s voice.

Adrian.

Then Victor.

Serena lowered her voice.

“Something else is happening.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

The line went quiet for several seconds.

Then Serena whispered:

“Another courier just arrived.”

My hand stopped on the kitchen counter.

“Another?”

“Yes.”

“I sent only one envelope.”

“I know.”

That was when I understood.

The second DNA evidence mentioned in the anonymous message I had received three days earlier hadn’t been mine.

Someone else had been waiting for this wedding too.

At the Cole estate, the second envelope was delivered directly to Vivian.

Her smile disappeared the moment she saw the sender.

Adrian noticed.

“Who sent that?”

“No one.”

Vivian tried to hide it inside her handbag.

Adrian took it from her.

“Give it back!”

That alone was enough.

He tore it open.

Three DNA reports fell onto the table.

Ethan Blake.

Lucas Blake.

Noah Blake.

Vivian’s triplets.

The children whose existence had ended our marriage.

Adrian’s hands began to shake.

The first report contained a single line highlighted in red.

PATERNITY EXCLUDED.

The second said the same.

So did the third.

The room went silent.

Adrian slowly raised his eyes.

“What is this?”

Vivian backed away.

“Those are fake.”

“Are they?”

“Yes!”

She turned toward Victor.

“Tell him!”

Wrong move.

Everyone saw it.

Especially Adrian.

He looked at his father.

Victor’s face had gone gray.

“Why are you asking him?”

Vivian said nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Vivian.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please. Not today.”

“Whose children are they?”

“I love you.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

His mother entered the room after hearing the shouting.

“What happened?”

Adrian threw the reports onto the table.

“Ask Father.”

Mrs. Cole picked one up.

By the time she reached the bottom, her hands were trembling.

But there was something strange in her expression.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Adrian noticed that too.

“You knew?”

She sat down.

“Adrian…”

“You knew those boys weren’t mine?”

“No.”

“Then why do you look like that?”

Victor suddenly snapped:

“Enough.”

Everyone turned toward him.

He stepped forward and grabbed the reports.

“This wedding will continue.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You expect me to marry her after this?”

“You will do what is necessary for the family.”

Those were nearly the exact words he had used two years earlier when he forced me out.

This time Adrian heard them differently.

“Who is their father?”

Victor didn’t answer.

Adrian reached for one of the reports.

Then stopped.

There was another page underneath.

A kinship analysis.

Not requested by Adrian.

Not requested by me.

Someone had compared the triplets’ genetic profiles against multiple members of the Cole family.

Adrian read the conclusion.

His expression slowly emptied.

The biological father was a first-degree paternal relative of Adrian Cole.

His mother whispered:

“Oh, God.”

Vivian began crying.

Adrian looked around.

He had no brothers.

No adult sons.

There was only one other first-degree male relative whose DNA could produce that result.

His father.

Victor.

Adrian stared at him.

“No.”

Victor’s silence was worse than a confession.

“You?”

Vivian covered her face.

Adrian staggered backward.

The three boys he had proudly introduced as his sons…

The children his father had used to destroy my marriage…

The supposed heirs Victor claimed the Cole family desperately needed…

were potentially Victor Cole’s own children.

His wife rose slowly from her chair.

For the first time, Victor looked frightened.

She walked toward him.

“You told me Elena had to leave because Adrian had dishonored this family.”

Victor said nothing.

“You paid her two hundred million.”

Silence.

“You humiliated that girl while she was carrying four of our actual grandchildren…”

Her voice cracked.

“…to hide your own affair?”

Vivian suddenly shouted:

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this!”

Everyone turned toward her.

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“What wasn’t?”

Vivian realized her mistake too late.

Victor barked:

“Stop talking.”

But she was already breaking.

“You promised me the boys would inherit everything!”

Adrian went completely still.

Outside, the wedding orchestra continued playing.

Inside, the Cole family was collapsing.

Then Serena sent me a photograph of the second report.

I enlarged the final page.

And that was when I noticed something Adrian hadn’t yet seen.

The laboratory had included the identity of the person who ordered the comparison.

I knew the name.

Everyone in the Cole family knew it.

But according to Adrian, that person had been dead for six years.

Margaret Cole.

Adrian’s grandmother.

The former chairwoman of the Cole Group.

The woman whose will controlled nearly half the family fortune.

I immediately called Serena.

“Where did that envelope come from?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

“Elena, why?”

I stared at Margaret Cole’s name.

Because if the dead woman had ordered DNA testing on Vivian’s children, there were only two possibilities.

Either someone had forged her identity.

Or the Cole family had been lying about far more than my divorce.

Then another message reached my phone.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

Margaret Cole, older but unmistakably alive, sitting beside a hospital window.

The photograph had been taken that morning.

Underneath were nine words:

THE TRIPLETS WERE ONLY THE BAIT. ASK WHO WANTED YOUR FOUR CHILDREN GONE.

And suddenly I understood something terrifying.

Victor hadn’t paid two hundred million dollars merely to end my marriage.

Someone had needed me—and the four babies I was carrying—out of the Cole family before anyone discovered they existed.
