PART 2: THE SECRET THE VALDÉS FAMILY BURIED FOR TEN YEARS

Adrián stood frozen in front of me.

For several seconds, the noise of the ballroom seemed to disappear.

I could no longer hear the clinking glasses, the music, or the whispers spreading among the guests.

I only saw his eyes fixed on the small velvet box I had just closed.

“Five years,” he repeated slowly. “Gabriel gave you that ring five years ago?”

I didn’t answer.

Gabriel gently squeezed my hand.

That single gesture was enough to make Adrián lose what little composure he had left.

“That doesn’t make any sense,” he said. “You left alone.”

“That’s what everyone believed.”

Adrián’s expression changed.

But before he could ask anything else, his father appeared beside us.

Octavio Valdés no longer looked like the flawless businessman who, only minutes earlier, had been raising a glass to another anniversary of his empire.

His face had gone gray.

And he wasn’t looking at me.

He was staring at Gabriel.

“What are you doing in my house?”

Gabriel smiled.

“Technically, this is a hotel.”

“You know exactly what I mean.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel tilted his head slightly.

“I came back to finish a conversation you started ten years ago.”

I watched Octavio tighten his grip around his glass until his knuckles turned white.

Adrián frowned.

“Dad, what is he talking about?”

“Nothing.”

The answer came too quickly.

Gabriel let out a quiet laugh.

“Funny. Ten years ago, you said it was nothing too.”

Octavio stepped closer.

“Not another word.”

“Why? Because there are journalists here?”

That immediately stirred the guests.

Several people discreetly reached for their phones.

Camila looked around, confused.

Adrián, however, had stopped watching me.

For the first time, he was looking at his father as if he no longer recognized him.

“What happened ten years ago?”

Octavio ignored the question.

Instead, he looked directly at me.

“Elena, you should leave.”

I felt strangely calm.

“I just got here.”

“You don’t understand what you’re getting involved in.”

“I understand far more than you think.”

His jaw tightened.

Gabriel took a step toward him.

“The difference is that Elena has seen the documents now.”

Octavio’s face went pale.

Adrián noticed.

So did I.

“What documents?” Adrián demanded.

No one answered.

Then my father appeared.

Eduardo Salvatierra crossed the ballroom wearing an expression I had never seen on him before.

He wasn’t surprised.

He was terrified.

“Elena.”

I turned.

“Dad.”

“Come with me.”

“No.”

“Now.”

“I said no.”

The whispers around us grew louder.

My father lowered his voice.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

Those words hurt more than I expected.

Because I had heard them too many times in my life.

When I wanted to study abroad.

When I chose to work without using my family name.

When I left after that night at the hotel.

There had always been someone convinced they knew better than I did what I should do.

I looked straight at him.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

Gabriel reached inside his jacket and pulled out an envelope.

Octavio took one step back.

It was barely noticeable.

But Adrián saw it.

“Dad,” he said again. “What the hell is in that envelope?”

Gabriel didn’t hand it to him.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a copy of a contract dated ten years earlier.

Three names appeared across the top.

Valdés Group.

Beaumont Capital.

Salvatierra Holdings.

And beneath them was a number.

1.8 billion euros.

Camila let out a small gasp.

Before I could stop him, Adrián took the document from my hands.

His eyes moved quickly across the pages.

“What is this?”

Gabriel answered calmly.

“The agreement that turned your family into one of the most powerful families in Spain.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“No.”

I pointed toward the final page.

“Look at the signatures.”

Adrián did.

The first belonged to Octavio.

The second belonged to Gabriel’s father.

The third…

Belonged to my grandfather.

Adrián slowly looked up.

“What does Elena have to do with this?”

Gabriel remained silent for a moment.

“Everything.”

My father closed his eyes.

And that was when I realized he was still hiding something from me.

“Dad,” I whispered. “What haven’t you told me?”

“This isn’t the place.”

“Then tell me where the place is.”

He didn’t answer.

Gabriel looked at me.

“Elena…”

The hesitation in his voice alarmed me.

Gabriel never hesitated.

“Tell me.”

“Your grandfather didn’t invest money in the Valdés Group.”

Adrián looked back at the contract.

“It says right here that he did.”

“Because that document was altered.”

Octavio slammed his hand onto the table.

“Enough!”

The entire ballroom went silent.

Gabriel didn’t even blink.

“Your father gave them something far more valuable than money.”

A chill ran through me.

“What?”

Gabriel looked directly at Octavio.

“The original patents for the energy system that turned the Valdés Group into what it is today.”

Adrián shook his head.

“Our system was developed internally.”

“That’s the official story.”

“It’s the truth.”

“Then you shouldn’t have any problem when we request a full judicial audit tomorrow.”

Octavio finally lost all color in his face.

Adrián stared at Gabriel.

“An audit?”

“And an intellectual-property claim,” I added.

Now I understood why Gabriel had insisted that we reveal nothing before returning to Madrid.

For six months, we had been rebuilding the trail.

Old companies.

Missing transactions.

Corporate restructurings.

Archived records.

But one piece was still missing.

The original document.

Without it, we could trigger an investigation.

With it, we could destroy the Valdés empire.

Adrián suddenly grabbed my arm.

Gabriel immediately stepped between us.

“Let her go.”

Adrián released me, but his eyes remained furious.

“So that’s why you came back? To destroy my family?”

“I came back to recover what belongs to mine.”

“And marrying him is part of the plan?”

The question made me smile sadly.

“There it is again, Adrián. You still believe every decision I make somehow has something to do with you.”

Camila remained silent.

For the first time since I had arrived, I almost felt sorry for her.

She had walked into a story whose real conflict had begun years before she ever met Adrián.

Then my father spoke.

“Elena, you can’t file that lawsuit.”

I turned toward him.

“Why?”

“Because the original document doesn’t exist anymore.”

Gabriel frowned.

“That’s not true.”

My father looked at him.

“Yes, it is.”

“Your father kept a copy.”

“He destroyed it before he died.”

Silence crashed over us.

It felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath my feet.

“Why would he do that?”

My father waited too long to answer.

And then a voice came from behind us.

“Because someone forced him to.”

Everyone turned.

An older woman stood near the ballroom entrance.

I recognized her immediately.

Mercedes Valdés.

Adrián’s mother.

I hadn’t seen her since before I left Spain.

She had spent years living abroad and rarely appeared in public anymore.

Adrián’s eyes widened.

“Mom…”

Mercedes didn’t look at him.

She walked directly toward me.

A small black handbag was clasped between her hands.

“Your grandfather did not destroy the document, Elena.”

My heart began pounding.

Octavio moved toward her.

“Mercedes, shut up.”

She stopped.

Then she placed a small key in my hand.

“The original still exists.”

Octavio hurled his glass onto the floor.

It shattered.

“You have no idea what you’re doing!”

Mercedes looked at him with chilling calm.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

I closed my fingers around the key.

“Where is it?”

Mercedes opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every light in the ballroom went out.

People screamed.

Someone crashed into a table.

Gabriel immediately wrapped one arm around me and pulled me away from the crowd.

“Elena, don’t move.”

“Mercedes…”

The emergency lights came on less than ten seconds later.

When we looked toward the entrance again, Mercedes was gone.

So was Octavio.

And on the floor, exactly where she had been standing moments earlier, I saw her handbag lying open.

Inside was a phone.

The screen was still glowing.

A new message had just appeared.

“If Elena finds the document, she will also discover who arranged what happened that night at the hotel.”

My blood turned cold.

Because there was only one night they could be talking about.

The night I found Adrián kissing another woman.

The night that changed my entire life.

I slowly lifted my head.

Adrián was standing behind me.

He had read the message too.

And for the first time since I had known him, he looked genuinely afraid.
