PART 2: My Billionaire Husband Refused to Divorce Me… Then I Discovered Our One-Year Marriage Was Never a Contract to Him

The day the divorce papers arrived at the company, I thought everything was finally over.

One year.

Exactly one year.

That was the agreement.

No love.

No expectations.

No interference.

Just two people helping each other solve their problems.

Then walking away.

Simple.

Clean.

At least…

That was what I believed.

I was sitting at my desk in the administration department when the lawyer’s email arrived.

“Mrs. Ferrer, the divorce documents have been prepared. Please review and sign.”

I stared at those words.

Mrs. Ferrer.

A title I rarely used.

A title that existed only on paper.

Because in reality, nobody knew I was Adrián Ferrer’s wife.

Not the employees.

Not the executives.

Not even most people close to him.

To everyone, I was just Clara Valdés.

An ordinary employee.

The woman who brought documents.

The woman who attended meetings.

The woman nobody paid attention to.

And Adrián…

was the man everyone feared.

The president of Ferrer Group.

My husband.

I printed the documents.

I read every page.

The same agreement.

The same conditions.

The same ending.

After one year, the marriage would end.

No disputes.

No emotional attachment.

No complications.

I smiled.

Finally.

I signed my name.

Clara Valdés.

My hand stopped for a moment.

Because strangely…

the signature felt heavier than I expected.

That afternoon, I went to his office.

Adrián was inside.

Standing beside the window.

The city reflected behind him.

He didn’t turn around when I entered.

“You came.”

I placed the documents on his desk.

“The divorce papers.”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then he slowly turned.

“You signed?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“You didn’t even hesitate?”

I was confused.

“Why would I?”

His eyes darkened.

“Because this is our marriage.”

I almost laughed.

“Our agreement.”

His jaw tightened.

“Is that all it was to you?”

I looked at him.

“Wasn’t it?”

For the first time in a year…

Adrián had no immediate answer.

Because he knew.

At the beginning, it was exactly that.

A contract.

A solution.

A transaction.

My family needed money.

His family needed a marriage alliance.

Nobody mentioned love.

Nobody expected feelings.

Except…

somewhere along the way…

something changed.

Three months after our wedding, I got sick.

I thought he wouldn’t care.

After all, we were just partners in an agreement.

But when I woke up at midnight with a fever, I found Adrián sitting beside my bed.

“You haven’t slept?”

I asked.

He looked away.

“I was working.”

I looked at the cold medicine on the table.

“You prepared this?”

“No.”

A pause.

“The maid did.”

But the maid later told me:

“Mr. Ferrer stayed beside you all night.”

I never mentioned it.

Because I didn’t want to misunderstand.

Six months into our marriage, I came home late after finishing a report.

I expected an empty house.

Instead, I found food on the table.

I looked at Adrián.

“You waited?”

“No.”

He continued reading.

“I just happened to eat late.”

But the food was my favorite.

Still warm.

And he had never ordered it for himself.

Eight months into our marriage, I lost my umbrella during a storm.

The next day, there was a new umbrella in my office.

No note.

No explanation.

But the security cameras showed who left it.

Adrián.

I saw everything.

I noticed everything.

But I convinced myself it meant nothing.

Because believing otherwise was dangerous.

A temporary husband should not become a permanent dream.

“I thought you wanted freedom.”

Adrián’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

“I do.”

His eyes became colder.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

I frowned.

“After what?”

He laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“You really don’t know.”

“Know what?”

He walked toward me.

For the first time, I saw something in his eyes.

Not the president.

Not the businessman.

A hurt man.

“You thought I spent this year waiting for the divorce date?”

I stayed silent.

“Clara.”

His voice lowered.

“I was waiting for you to realize that this marriage stopped being a contract a long time ago.”

My heart skipped.

But I refused to believe it.

“Adrián…”

“No.”

He interrupted.

“You don’t have to say anything.”

He picked up the divorce papers.

Then tore them.

Right in front of me.

I froze.

“What are you doing?”

“I won’t sign.”

My eyes widened.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“This is not how agreements work.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Because this is no longer an agreement.”

The next morning, the entire company was shocked.

Not because Adrián refused the divorce.

Because he announced something else.

A company-wide meeting.

Every executive attended.

Every manager.

Every department head.

And I stood at the back, confused.

Adrián walked onto the stage.

Everyone became silent.

Then he said:

“There is someone I need to introduce.”

My heart started beating faster.

“Her name is Clara Valdés.”

People looked around.

I froze.

“She is not only an employee of this company.”

A pause.

“She is my wife.”

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Shock.

Questions.

My boss looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

I wanted to disappear.

After the meeting ended, I immediately found him.

“Are you crazy?”

Adrián looked calm.

“No.”

“You just told everyone.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because I spent one year hiding the person who mattered most to me.”

That night, I finally asked the question I had avoided.

“When did you start caring about me?”

Adrián was quiet.

Then he answered:

“The day you forgot your own birthday because you were helping an employee finish a project.”

I blinked.

“You remember that?”

“I remember everything.”

“The day you gave your bonus to help your colleague pay medical bills.”

“The day you stayed in the office until midnight because a customer needed help.”

“The day you pretended you weren’t hurt when people ignored your contributions.”

He looked at me.

“You always thought nobody saw you.”

A pause.

“But I did.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Because the man I thought was distant…

had been watching.

The man I thought didn’t care…

had remembered everything.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

His expression softened.

“Because you never looked at me as someone who could love you.”

That sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

For a year, I had been protecting myself from loving him.

I had forgotten to notice whether he loved me.

A few weeks later, the company held its annual celebration.

Everyone knew now.

The president’s wife was not some mysterious woman.

She was Clara.

The employee everyone underestimated.

The woman who sat quietly in the administration department.

The woman who had been beside Adrián before anyone knew.

At the end of the night, Adrián found me outside.

“You still want the divorce?”

I smiled.

“Do you?”

He shook his head immediately.

“No.”

I laughed.

“That was fast.”

“I waited one year.”

He stepped closer.

“One year of pretending I didn’t want to hold your hand.”

“One year of pretending I didn’t care when you came home late.”

“One year of pretending this was only a contract.”

His voice became softer.

“I don’t want to pretend anymore.”

I looked at him.

The man who was once a stranger.

The man who became my husband because of a deal.

The man who accidentally became the person I wanted beside me.

“Adrián.”

“Yes?”

“I still don’t know if I can suddenly become the perfect wife.”

He smiled.

“I don’t need a perfect wife.”

“Then what do you need?”

“You.”

The marriage that began as an agreement…

became the only promise neither of us wanted to break.

Because sometimes love does not arrive like a storm.

Sometimes it quietly enters your life.

It waits.

It protects.

It stays.

And one day you realize…

the person you thought was temporary…

was the person who had always chosen you.

I thought I was counting down the days until my freedom.

But Adrián was counting down the days until I finally understood…

I was never his obligation.

I was his choice.
