PART 2: The Man Who Chose To Let Me Go

I stared at the photo for a long time.

Ethan Shen.

The man who had held my hand through two years of graduate school applications.

The man who remembered every small habit of mine.

The man who stayed awake with me during countless nights when I was afraid I wasn’t good enough.

Now he was sitting across from another woman.

Wearing the suit I had chosen for him.

Smiling politely.

Like our two years together had never existed.

I didn’t cry.

That surprised me.

Maybe because somewhere inside, I had already cried enough the moment he wrote:

“We’re done.”

Lily noticed something was wrong.

She looked at my expression carefully.

“Avery?”

I locked my phone.

“Nothing.”

She didn’t believe me.

But she was smart enough not to force me.

Instead, she sat beside me.

“Is it about my brother?”

The room became silent.

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

Lily’s eyes widened.

“No way.”

She stood up.

“You’re the girl?”

I looked at her.

“What girl?”

“The girl he broke up with.”

Her voice was full of disbelief.

I lowered my eyes.

“Yes.”

For several seconds, Lily didn’t speak.

Then she suddenly sat down.

“My brother is an idiot.”

I almost laughed.

Despite everything.

Because she said it with such certainty.

That night, Lily called Ethan.

Not secretly.

Right in front of me.

The moment he answered, her voice exploded.

“Ethan Shen, are you insane?”

There was silence.

Then his voice came through the phone.

“Lily?”

“You broke up with Avery?”

Another silence.

“How do you know?”

Lily looked at me.

Then answered coldly:

“She is my roommate.”

I watched Ethan freeze through the phone.

Even without seeing his face, I knew.

He never expected this.

“Lily, listen—”

“No.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to explain.”

“You spent two years loving someone and then abandoned her because Dad wanted a business marriage?”

Silence.

Then Ethan whispered:

“You don’t understand.”

“No, I understand perfectly.”

Lily laughed bitterly.

“You were always like this.”

“You are brave when fighting for other people.”

“But when it comes to your own life, you run away.”

I didn’t want to listen anymore.

I stood up.

“I’ll go outside.”

But Lily grabbed my hand.

“No.”

She looked at me seriously.

“You deserve to hear this.”

On the other side of the phone, Ethan finally spoke.

“Avery… is there?”

My fingers tightened.

Lily looked at me.

I shook my head.

She understood.

“No.”

Another silence.

Then Ethan asked softly:

“Is she okay?”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because that was the question he should have asked before leaving.

Before choosing someone else.

Before making me believe I was disposable.

Three days later, Ethan appeared at the university.

Everyone recognized him immediately.

Not because he was famous.

Because he looked like a man who had lost something important.

He waited outside the graduate building for almost two hours.

When I came out, he stood up.

“Avery.”

I stopped.

The person standing in front of me was familiar.

But somehow…

not the same.

“I need to explain.”

I looked at him calmly.

“No.”

His face changed.

“Please.”

“Ethan.”

I held my books tighter.

“You already explained.”

“I don’t love you enough to choose you.”

“That was your explanation.”

His expression broke.

“That isn’t true.”

“Then what is?”

He couldn’t answer.

Because the truth was simple.

He loved me.

But not enough to fight for me.

Finally he said:

“My family threatened to cut off everything.”

“My father’s company is connected to thousands of employees.”

“If I refused Charlotte, many people would suffer.”

I looked at him.

“And you decided I was the easiest person to sacrifice.”

His eyes turned red.

“No.”

“Yes.”

My voice remained calm.

“That is exactly what you did.”

Ethan lowered his head.

“I thought if I left you quickly, you would hate me and move on.”

I smiled sadly.

“You didn’t protect me.”

“You just protected yourself from feeling guilty.”

That sentence destroyed him.

Because it was true.

A month later, the engagement between Ethan Shen and Charlotte Harrison was announced.

The news spread everywhere.

But three days before the engagement ceremony…

Charlotte canceled it herself.

The reason?

A business scandal involving her family’s company.

And the person who exposed the evidence…

was Lily Shen.

Nobody expected it.

Especially Ethan.

When he confronted his sister, Lily only said:

“I didn’t destroy your engagement.”

“I saved you from marrying someone who treats people like transactions.”

The Shen family collapsed into chaos.

The partnership with the Harrisons failed.

Ethan finally had to face the consequences of every decision he made.

But I never went back.

Two years later.

I graduated with my master’s degree.

I became a professor at the university.

My mother’s small restaurant expanded into a successful family business.

And Lily became my closest friend.

One winter afternoon, I met Ethan again.

He was different.

Older.

Quieter.

No longer the confident man who thought everything could be solved later.

He looked at me.

“Avery.”

I smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.”

He hesitated.

Then asked:

“Are you happy?”

I thought about it.

The answer came easily.

“Yes.”

His eyes lowered.

“I’m glad.”

A pause.

“Even if I’m not part of it?”

I looked at him.

“For a long time, I thought losing you was the worst thing that happened to me.”

“But I was wrong.”

“What was worse?”

I smiled.

“Losing myself while trying to keep you.”

Ethan didn’t ask me to come back.

Maybe he finally understood.

Some doors don’t close because we stop loving someone.

They close because we finally learn our own worth.

The night Ethan Shen ended our relationship…

I thought he had taken away my future.

But I was wrong.

He only removed himself from a future where I was finally becoming the person I was meant to be.

And years later, when he looked back…

The thing he regretted most was not losing the woman he loved.

It was realizing too late…

that she had already learned how to live without him.
