PART 2: The Woman They Took For Granted Became The One They Could Never Reach Again

The taxi disappeared into the rain.

I watched through the window as Nathan’s figure became smaller and smaller.

For the first time in six years…

I didn’t feel the need to turn around.

Before, whenever we argued, I was always the one who worried.

Did he misunderstand me?

Was I being too sensitive?

Was I asking for too much?

But that night, sitting alone in the back seat of the taxi, I suddenly understood something.

A person who truly values you doesn’t need you to explain why you deserve a place.

They already know.

The next morning, I arrived at the law firm earlier than usual.

My colleagues noticed immediately.

“Emma, you look different today.”

I smiled.

“Do I?”

“Yes.”

One of them looked at me carefully.

“Usually when you come in after arguing with Nathan, you look exhausted.”

I paused.

Because she was right.

For the past three years, every conflict with Nathan ended the same way.

I apologized first.

I explained first.

I tried to understand first.

Even when I was hurt.

Even when I was disappointed.

Because I thought love meant being patient.

But I finally realized…

patience without respect was just self-abandonment.

At nine o’clock, Chloe appeared at my office.

Her eyes were slightly red.

She closed the door behind her.

“Emma.”

I didn’t look up from the documents.

“What is it?”

“You removed me from the case.”

“Yes.”

“Because of yesterday?”

I placed the file down.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Then why?”

“Because I no longer trust our professional boundaries.”

Her face changed.

“Emma, you’re misunderstanding Nathan and me.”

I smiled faintly.

“That sentence sounds familiar.”

She froze.

I continued:

“Every time something happens, everyone tells me I misunderstood.”

“You never think about why I feel that way.”

Chloe lowered her eyes.

“I really only see him as a friend.”

“Maybe.”

I nodded.

“But friendship also needs limits.”

She didn’t answer.

That afternoon, Nathan came to the office.

Everyone noticed.

The CEO of Collins Investment walking into a law firm personally was not something that happened often.

He stood outside my office.

“Emma.”

I looked up.

“What are you doing here?”

“We need to talk.”

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

His expression became complicated.

“You’re really ending everything over this?”

I closed my laptop.

“Nathan, you still think this is about a seat.”

He was silent.

“But it was never about the seat.”

“It was about the fact that when something happened, you instinctively chose her.”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not true.”

“Then answer me.”

I stood.

“When I won my biggest case, who did you celebrate with?”

He looked away.

“When I worked until midnight for months, who did you worry about?”

Silence.

“When Chloe called you because she was upset, how many times did you leave me waiting?”

His face slowly changed.

Because he knew.

“I admit I made mistakes.”

I looked at him.

“Mistakes?”

“Yes.”

He stepped closer.

“I was too focused on taking care of her because she was alone here.”

I laughed softly.

“And me?”

He stopped.

“I was your girlfriend.”

“I was the person who stood beside you for three years.”

“I was the person who supported you when your company was struggling.”

“You never wondered if I felt alone?”

Nathan had no answer.

The next week, the biggest case of my career reached its final stage.

The Westbrook case.

The one I had sacrificed months for.

Without Chloe.

Without Nathan.

Without anyone distracting me.

I won.

The entire legal department celebrated.

My name appeared in several financial newspapers.

Emma Carter — The Lawyer Who Changed The Outcome Of The Westbrook Case.

For the first time in years…

people saw me.

Not as Nathan’s girlfriend.

Not as Chloe’s friend.

Just Emma Carter.

A month later, I met Nathan again.

At a business event.

He looked different.

Tired.

Quiet.

When he saw me, he walked over.

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

“You’ve changed.”

I smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I just stopped shrinking myself.”

His eyes lowered.

“I miss you.”

I looked at him calmly.

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

“But missing someone doesn’t mean you know how to love them.”

Those words hurt him.

I could see it.

But I didn’t take them back.

Later, I heard that Nathan and Chloe stopped working together.

Not because of me.

Because everyone finally saw what I had seen.

The boundaries were never clear.

And once trust disappeared…

nothing could return to how it was.

One year later, I became a partner at the law firm.

My office was bigger.

My career was stronger.

My life was quieter.

One evening, I walked outside after a long day.

It started raining.

The same kind of rain from that night.

But this time…

I didn’t feel abandoned.

I opened my umbrella and smiled.

Because I finally understood.

The front seat was never the problem.

The problem was that I had spent years sitting in the back…

waiting for someone to remember I belonged there.

And the day I stopped waiting…

I found my own place.

Some people lose you slowly, one small choice at a time.

And when they finally realize your value, they discover the hardest truth:

The person who once fought for a place in their life no longer needs one.
