PART 2: I Returned to Valencia to Take Back Everything They Stole From Me

Álvaro stared at me.

For the first time in five years, the confidence that always surrounded him disappeared.

The man who once told me I would never return to Valencia was standing in front of me…

Watching the woman he had thrown away become the person who could destroy everything he built.

But he still didn’t understand.

This was never about revenge.

Revenge would mean I still wanted something from him.

I didn’t.

I wanted the truth.

The lawyer’s words continued echoing in the silence.

“Mr. Montenegro, Ferrer Capital has acquired enough shares to request a special audit of Montenegro Holdings.”

Álvaro’s face changed.

“A special audit?”

The lawyer nodded.

“Yes.”

Valeria looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered her.

Because she didn’t understand the world Álvaro lived in.

The world of contracts.

Shares.

Hidden accounts.

And secrets buried under millions.

I did.

Because five years ago…

I had helped build that world.

After I left Valencia, everyone thought I had disappeared.

They were wrong.

I was rebuilding.

And while I was learning how to create my own empire, I never forgot one detail.

The night Álvaro destroyed me, he had not acted alone.

A man like Álvaro did not suddenly become cruel.

He was always surrounded by people who benefited from his cruelty.

Someone had helped him.

Someone had manipulated the lawsuit.

Someone had frozen my accounts.

Someone had convinced investors to abandon me.

And that person…

Was still inside Montenegro Holdings.

Three days after the wedding invitation incident, Álvaro came to my office.

Not the arrogant businessman from five years ago.

A tired man.

A desperate man.

“I need to talk to you.”

I didn’t look up from my documents.

“You have ten minutes.”

He swallowed.

“Was this your plan from the beginning?”

I finally looked at him.

“What?”

“Coming back.”

“Buying my shares.”

“Taking control.”

I smiled slightly.

“No.”

“Then what is this?”

“A consequence.”

His jaw tightened.

“You destroyed my company.”

I closed the folder.

“No, Álvaro.”

“I exposed what was already rotten.”

He became silent.

Then he said something I never expected.

“I never wanted it to go this far.”

For a second, I almost laughed.

Because five years ago, those words would have broken me.

Now they only sounded empty.

“You never wanted what to go this far?”

“The divorce?”

“The affair?”

“The lawsuit?”

“Or destroying my reputation?”

His eyes lowered.

“I was angry.”

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

“You weren’t sorry.”

“You were angry that I stopped accepting what you did.”

Álvaro sat down.

For the first time, he looked human.

“I lost everything because of one mistake.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You lost everything because you kept making the same mistake.”

“What mistake?”

I looked at him.

“Believing people would always forgive you.”

Then I placed a folder on the table.

His expression changed.

“What is that?”

“Something you should have discovered five years ago.”

He opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Private agreements.

Hidden transactions.

And one name.

His own brother.

Sebastián Montenegro.

Álvaro froze.

“No.”

I watched his reaction.

“You know him better than anyone.”

“He wouldn’t…”

“He did.”

Five years earlier, when Álvaro’s affair became public, Sebastián had secretly moved company funds.

He knew the scandal would damage Álvaro.

He knew Álvaro would be distracted.

So he created a plan.

Destroy Álvaro’s reputation.

Force him into financial instability.

Then take control of Montenegro Holdings.

The divorce lawsuit.

The frozen accounts.

The legal pressure against me.

Everything had been part of a larger battle.

And Álvaro…

Had been too arrogant to notice.

“He used me.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

The silence was heavy.

Then Álvaro laughed bitterly.

“The person I trusted most…”

I didn’t respond.

Because I knew that pain.

I had felt it too.

The difference was…

When Álvaro lost trust, he lost power.

When I lost trust…

I found myself.

A week later, the audit results became public.

Montenegro Holdings was shaken.

Sebastián was removed from his position.

Several executives resigned.

The media that once followed my divorce now followed the collapse of the family empire.

But this time…

They weren’t writing about Álvaro’s ex-wife.

They were writing about Elena Ferrer.

The woman who returned.

Valeria disappeared from the headlines.

The wedding never happened.

Not because I stopped it.

Because she realized something.

She hadn’t won anything.

She had spent five years waiting for Álvaro to choose her.

Only to discover that a man who betrays one person will eventually betray another.

One month later, I received a letter.

From Álvaro.

I almost threw it away.

But I opened it.

Inside was only one page.

“Elena.”

“I spent years thinking you wanted to destroy me.”

“Now I understand something.”

“You were the only person who tried to save me from becoming someone terrible.”

“I lost you because I believed you would always stay.”

“I was wrong.”

I read it twice.

Then I folded it.

And put it away.

Not because I wanted to keep it.

Because I had finally reached a point where his words no longer controlled my emotions.

Six months later, Ferrer Capital officially acquired Montenegro Holdings.

But I didn’t keep the name.

I changed it.

The new company became:

Ferrer & Montenegro International Group.

Not because Álvaro deserved a place.

Because thousands of employees depended on that company.

And unlike the old Montenegro family…

I knew power was not about owning people.

It was about protecting them.

A year after returning to Valencia, I stood in front of the same hotel where my marriage had ended.

The same place where Álvaro once told me:

“You will never come back.”

I looked at the building.

And smiled.

Because he had been right about one thing.

I never came back.

The woman who left Valencia never returned.

She was broken.

She was afraid.

She believed she had lost everything.

The woman standing there now…

Was someone completely different.

Clara walked beside me.

She looked at the hotel.

“Are you thinking about him?”

I smiled.

“No.”

“Then what?”

I looked at the city.

“The woman I used to be.”

Clara took my hand.

“Do you miss her?”

I thought for a moment.

Then shook my head.

“No.”

“Because she survived long enough for me to become this person.”

Years later, a journalist asked me:

“Ms. Ferrer, do you regret your marriage?”

I looked at the camera.

I remembered the pain.

The betrayal.

The humiliation.

The night I left with one suitcase.

Then I smiled.

“No.”

The journalist seemed surprised.

“Why?”

I answered:

“Because sometimes the person who destroys your life…”

“Is the same person who accidentally forces you to build a better one.”

Five years ago, Álvaro Montenegro expelled me from Valencia.

He thought he was ending my story.

He thought I would disappear.

He thought I needed his name.

His family.

His permission.

He was wrong.

I didn’t return to Valencia to reclaim my old life.

I returned because I had created a new one.

And the greatest victory was not watching him lose everything.

It was realizing…

I no longer needed him to regret losing me.

Because I had already won the moment I chose myself.
